First of all, there’s a period at the end of this filename which I don’t think Windows will let you create as such.
Secondly, looks like it’s hidden but it’s properties doesn’t have hidden checked so wtf
-Have you tried deleting the file through DOS?
-What about drag-n-dropping the file onto Recyclebin?
-How about renaming and then deleting?
Brother Genius, I think none of the above methods will work. You are not getting the warning "Cannot delete because file is in use", etc. I am pretty sure it is not a "zero" byte file as well. :(
As your nick suggests, you might have acquired this file in an ingenious way. :D Did you scoop it out of a temporary installation directory? IMHO, it is something to do with copy protection schemes. I absolutely have no idea how to delete such files.
I have a similar folder on my HD which I cannot delete anymore. I have tried all the above techniques and more. Trying to be smart backfired for me. If you are interested I can post my story here.
hehe.. photoshop cs ka special plug-in nahi mil rah
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop>del CAB2IHVZ.
Could Not Find C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\CAB2IHVZ.
so killing explorer didn’t help…
i tried setting its attributes but it gave me an error that file is not found…
i tried this software called Unlocker (desc below) but it didn’t work either
now, BootCD is left to try
p.s. Could this be something naughty… i have this utility called tcpview.. i checked to see if that file has a listening port … its didn’t show in tcpview – Could this be a malicious file? if yes, then how can it show 0 kb and how can windows allow period at the end of the file as noted by bandoosta…
anythingelse i can try b4 trying Hiren or BartPE ?
Unlocker is an explorer extension that allows you with a simple right-click of the mouse on a file or folder to get rid of error message such as error deleting file or folder, cannot delete folder: it is used by another person or program.
Helps delete locked files with error messages like:
- Cannot delete file: Access is denied
- There has been a sharing violation.
- The source or destination file may be in use.
- The file is in use by another program or user.
- Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use
reinstall the friggin system, whats the biggy, save your imp data on other hdd or cd or watever. Reinstallation doesn't kill anyone, Mr.Genius, try to be genius for ur sake :p.
OK here is my story. I wanted to make an installation CD of Windows XP Service Pack 2. SP2 comes as a big single file installer. When you execute that installer, it first unpacks itself and then installs. It unpacks itself to a temporary directory and then deletes that directory once the installation is complete. I tried a couple techniques so that the installation folder is not deleted once the installation is complete, as I wanted to burn an installation CD out of it. However, the techniques did not work.
So lastly, I started installation of SP2 and when all the files got unpacked in the temporary directory, I stopped at the first prompt, opened explorer, found the temporary directory and copied all the files out of the temporary directory to a new directory, which I named i386, on a separate HD. After the installation completed, I opened the i386 folder and all the installation files were there. The folder size was close to 300MB. I needed to reboot my computer for the Windows XP to finalize the XP2 installation. I rebooted and activated my SP2 through Microsoft and system was just fine. However, now when I tried to go back to the i386 folder I got the message "Permission Denied: File is not found"!!!!. I checked the folder and now the system was showing that it had 0 bytes while before it had close to 300MB.
I searched Microsoft knowledge base and googled and Yahooed to no avail. The folder is still there and I cannot open or delete it. I get the same message what you are getting if I try to delete it.
Try this program. I had exactly the same problem (even the file name was very similar to yours ending with a period) long time ago and this programdid the trick. Let me know.
my advices are priceless beside, if you can’t find the solution, the last resort is always formating. That reminds me, I haven’t done that since last year, damn it. This weekend, its cleaning time
its probably a backup file or something ... like the way you open a word doc you a temp file. Its just a guess ... don't know ... but its best if you go into DOS [SAFE] mode and try to 'force' delete it from there
