The monitor lizards were used as a siege weapon in the 17th century apparently.

Legend has it that in the battle of Sinhagad, one of the Maratha rulers commanders “Tanaji” used a monitor lizard called Yeshwanti. He had a rope tied around its waist to climb a steep vertical rock face.
