Hezbollah shoots down Israeli helicopter

1 hour, 30 minutes ago

BEIRUT, Lebanon - **Hezbollah shot down an Israeli military helicopter in southern Lebanon on Saturday, and Israeli security officials said casualties were reported. **

The aircraft was shot down in the Maryamein valley near the village of Yater, and other helicopters scrambled to the area to try to rescue the crew, Hezbollah said in a report on its Al-Manar TV station.

It marked the first time an Israeli helicopter was shot down by Hezbollah guerrillas since the conflict began on July 12. Two helicopters collided and crashed and a third crashed separately in northern Israel early in the fighting.

The Islamic militant group said the helicopter was brought down by a new missile, the “Waad” (Arabic for Promise), in its arsenal.

The Israeli security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the attack with reporters, confirmed the helicopter was shot down and said casualties were reported.

The Israeli military declined comment.

The area had seen heavy ground combat Saturday during which hundreds of Israeli troops were airlifted to positions deep inside southern Lebanon and tanks punched across terrain to grab more territory before an expected cessation of hostilities Monday morning.

Hezbollah guerrillas crippled an Israeli warship with a missile on July 15.

Re: Hezbollah shoots down Israeli helicopter

Not 7 but 11 and 84 most likely crippled for life.

Re: Hezbollah shoots down Israeli helicopter

Hizbullah seems to have a few surprises up its sleeves.

Re: Hezbollah shoots down Israeli helicopter

Is it 11 or 17 Israeli soldiers killed? I also heard 34 tanks destroyed, anybody has an update?

Re: Hezbollah shoots down Israeli helicopter

Twenty-four (24) Israeli soldiers were killed on Saturday, the highest Israeli death toll since the conflict began.

Re: Hezbollah shoots down Israeli helicopter

24 soldiers killed (including 5 missing from helicopter), the highest single day loss since the conflict began. This takes the death toll to over 100 Israeli soldiers killed so far.

I really wish we could have a similar organization in Pakistan. MMA sure looks somewhat close to it but not exactly. I think we need to cut some of our lavish spending on food and be content like Hizb people.

Re: Hezbollah shoots down Israeli helicopter

Hizbollah reported fierce fighting in several parts of the border area and said its guerrillas destroyed at least three tanks and two bulldozers. It said guerrillas were clashing with an Israeli unit trying to reach the downed helicopter.

144 Israelis killed including 104 soldiers.

As reported by Reuters.

Re: Hezbollah shoots down Israeli helicopter

How do these guys (Hizbollah) fight so good? Imagine if they would have Air backing.

Re: Hezbollah shoots down Israeli helicopter

Basically its down to:

Training
Planning
Equipment

Re: Hezbollah shoots down Israeli helicopter

Mashallah, amazing resistance shown by Hezbollah. More power to them.

Expect the Zionist casualty rate to rise sharply over the next 24 hrs as the ceasefire deadline approaches.

Re: Hezbollah shoots down Israeli helicopter

Air backing would be an easy target for Israel. The most useful equipment that they would need would be in my opinion:

Night Vision Goggles
Anti- Tank Missiles

Re: Hezbollah shoots down Israeli helicopter

True, very true considering the fact, that these zionists are racing to capture more land, before the deadline approaches.

I saw this breaking news yesterday & made me jump for joy.

Re: Hezbollah shoots down Israeli helicopter

I wish we could a few people like them in Pakistan, I am amazed by Hizbollah's will.

We need to completely support Hizbollah guys from our heart according to our (ahle sunnah's) highest religious authority Mufti aala Hazrat Goma Jama AlAzhar, Cairo.

See the news below:

**Egypt's mufti defends Hizbollah operations

**Fri Jul 28, 11:11 AM ET

CAIRO (Reuters) - The Mufti of Egypt, the country's senior exponent of Islamic law, said the Lebanese guerrilla group Hizbollah was defending Lebanon against Israeli injustice.

"The attacks, killing and destruction that are taking place in Lebanon now by Israeli forces are injustice itself," Mufti Ali Gomaa told a meeting in southern Egypt. He was quoted by the state news agency MENA on Friday.

"This gives the Lebanese the right to defend themselves. Hizbollah is defending its country and what it is doing is not terrorism," said Gomaa, a government appointee.

On Thursday Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood, one of the largest Islamist political movements in the Arab world, rejected fatwas or religious rulings by Saudi clerics against Sunnis supporting Hizbollah, which is Shi'ite Muslim.

In Qatar, prominent Muslim scholar Sheikh Youssef al-Qaradawi condemned the fatwas as "fanaticism."

"When the enemy enters a country all the people there should unite to resist, be they Sunnis or Shi'ites, Muslims or Christians ... Such divisions hurt the resistance, which requires everyone to close ranks and speak in one voice," Qaradawi said.

"One is not allowed to instigate religious fanaticism which divides the people," he told Al Jazeera television.

In Cairo after noon prayers on Friday, about 1,000 people protested peacefully against Israeli attacks in Lebanon and the Palestinian territories. Many of them chanted slogans in support of Hizbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.

At a separate demonstration by children outside a mosque in north Cairo, police detained 15 adult supervisors from the opposition Muslim Brotherhood, the brotherhood said.
Riot police with sticks broke up the protest by about 800 children, one of the organization's Web sites said.

Re: Hezbollah shoots down Israeli helicopter

I found an article which suggests some reasons for their goos resistance.

http://mathaba.net/0_index.shtml?x=541640

Tactically, the success of Hezbollah on the ground is primarily due to its organizational structure, loyalty to the cause, and taking the enemy seriously.
To paraphrase Nasrallah: we are the sons of Mohammad…but we are not suicidal and have prepared ourselves for this day.
While these men are men of faith, they are not fanatics run by emotions.

This is a group of people who, through its high level secrecy, proven to be a well knit body that is virtually impenetrable. That in itself is witness to the fact that its members are committed to their cause and have engaged in heavy planning for this war.

They have planned because, unlike many Arab armies, have taken their enemy seriously and understood the brutal nature of their foe.

I read somewhere that there command structure is very flat. They don’t have a long hierarchy with many tiers of command. And therefore they do not make much noise during communication. Although such flat command structure may effect informations regarding new plans.

Hezbollah operate in small units, mostly consisting of not more than three people. Each unit knows the overall strategy, but they do not take orders directly from any central office. This frees them from relying on sophisticated communication network.

Hezbollah’s military wing is separate from its socio-political wing. The fighters don’t like to boast among public of who they are. It’s because they are afraid of betrayals.
