Birkins aren't even so 'in' currently. Fashion's unpredictable, for all you know, maybe in 2-3 years time, it might be considered too old fashioned to be seen with a birkin. Its already a dying trend. So If a buy it, how exactly I'm gonna benefit from its value if its not even considered trendy enough anymore in couple of years time?

^ the thing is, not just birkins but many designer/luxury brand bags are meant to last for years and the design is considered timeless..like the chanel quilted purse, the Louis Vuittons etc.
and I think the quality is such that even if u put it away for some time if it’s not in fashion ro you’re sick of it, when you take it out again it’s like brand new. Not sure but that’s what I’ve heard.
though, man oh man, I was at a shop today and felt the $200 leather bag…no wonder designer stuff is so coveted…it was like touching silk!

Not very design is considered timeless. Yes Chanel 22.5 is considered a timeless bag (a lot more timeless and iconic than a Birkin) but you can’t say that for every bag with a Chanel logo. LV’s logo is iconic but their current 2012 collection is much better than lets say their 2002 one. Some of their old designs so lack the appeal and character of their latest collection. Frankly speaking I have seen some hideous Chanel and LV bag where people have just paid for the logo and better quality material but there’s nothing particulary endearing or timeless about the design of the bag.

I din't mean that every single chanel or LV bag is timeless, but that each designer has timeless pieces in their collection. Obviously I'm not that into designer brands that I know of every single collection/piece that they make.
Another thing that was sort of discussed recently--fake designer bags/stuff is my pet peeve. bus. keh diya.
