Ghadeer-e-Khum has great significance for muslims & historians. It was this place where, according to both sunni & shia scholars who have recorded the event meticulously, our Prophet (saw) called 'Ali(as), to his side. He took hold of his hand and raised it up high, thereby presenting him with all his qualities and attributes to the gathered throng. Then the Messenger of God asked:
"O people, who is more deserving of the believers than their own persons?"
They answered: "God and His Messenger know better."
He continued: "For whomsoever I was his master 'Ali is now his master."
God, love whomsoever loves 'Ali and be the enemy of whoever is 'Ali's enemy. O God, aid whoever aids him and humble his enemies. O God, make him the pivot of truth."
After completing his speech, the Prophet requested the people to convey what he had said to those who were absent.
The assembled multitude had not begun to disperse when the agent of revelation revealed this verse to the Prophet:
Today I have perfected for you your religion,
completed for you My bounty, and chosen Islam for you as religion. (5:3)
The interpretations varies greatly amongst shia and sunni but, is similar amongst ismaili and shia! But they all agree that it was a synbolic event!
As such, I was wondering what the wahabi position on this was?
To all of my Shia friends with respect.
Let me addres Ramesha first.
Ramesha please do not make claims for all muslims becuse you do not represent the majority.
I have the same respect for all Sahaba's(PBUT) and four caliphs. I will like to direct your attention to one little fact, during Prophet's lifetime, he asked for Hazrat Abu Bakar(PBUH) to lead(Imamat) Fajr's prayer when he(Prophet PBUH) was himself sick. This was the biggest indication to all the Muslims that Abu Bakar(PBUH) is supposed to follow Muhammad(PBUH). Ali(PBUH) had a special place in Prophet's heart and so did all the other Caliphs.
I do not however think that it is appropraite to use Ya Ali Mula.. Because Ali was a human being, just like Prophet(PBUH), He was not Mula or nor can he help you in this world or in the akhrat.
Please forgive my ignorance, but this is the first time I have heard of Ghadeer-e-khum. From the best of my knowledge, all the 4 Caliphs, should be viewed as equals, eventhough some among them did have greater 'credentials' (for want of a better word). I heard a Hadith once where the Holy Prophet (PBUH)asked Hazrath Aisha Siddiqa (Who was the daughter of Hazrath Abbu Bakkar Siddiq (RA), and also the wife of the Blessed Prophet (PBUH)).'Oh Aisha (RA)do you know who has more more virtues (Nakian/good deeds)than there are stars in the sky ?.' Hazrath Aisha (RA) replied ' Allah and his Rasool (SAW) know best'. Then the holy Prophet(PBUH) replied,' It is Abbu Bakker..your father'. To the best of my knowledge, It was also Hazrath Abbu Bakker (RA), who accompanied the Blessed Prophet During Hijri (Migration from Makkah to Madina)and spent the night in a cave during the Migration. I have also heard hadith that states Hazrath Ali (RA) as asking Hazrath Abbu Bakker(RA)' Oh Abbu Bakker, I will give you my life time's worth of good deeds, if you in return would give me what you earned (good deeds) during that one night in the cave'. There are many such Hadith which relate to all the 4 Caliphs, in their own way, they all made great sacrifices for Islam and all had been given special attributs and rewards.
As far as Ghadeer-e-khum is concerned, I think one should look upon this event as the Holy Prophet (PBUH) telling people to follow Hazrath Ali (RA) as they followd the Blessed Prophet (PBUH). But I know for certain that one cannot perceive this as Hazrath Ali (RA) being labeled as the next prophet. Simply because The Holy Prophet (PBUH)is the last Prophet of Allah Taala and this confirmed in Hadith and the Holy Quran.

The point to understand here is the prevailing culture in the Arab’s at that time, if we just thing for a moment they were all people like us. There were family rivalries, prevailing traditions of being the head of the family, political and power based rivalries. All these things were very important for decision making especially for the person who with all his spiritual leadership and the political task of controlling a bunch of warring tribes. He understood this rivalry and always created a balance among them. There are many examples of this in history.
The Umaids, Hashmiats they had what is known as a “Sibling Rivalry”, although, he being the judicious at that time, he did his level best to finish up this rivalry, but as soon as he died, the tradition and culture took over.
So what we see here is an advanced form of sibling rivalry...
