Hey fellow forum buds, I’m helping one of my best friend organize his Walima. He’s here in the U.S. alone for school and all his family is overseas so he’s having a hard time doing everything. His fiance’s side is organizing the shaadi and helping him as much as they can, but he needs help with the Walima.
The theme for his fiance’s bridal suit for the Walima is Off White/Emerald Green with an Orange border. So we’re thinking the backdrop should have shades of orange for a contrast? He doesn’t want to have her blend in with the stage. And it’s a June wedding. Any ideas or pics of stages, centerpieces?
Also, he wants unique isle runners(is that what they’re called? the posts or columns that stand on the sides of an aisle or entryway?) He doesn’t want the typical columns on the side of the entryway or aisle, he wants something unique so any help?
Wedding favors? It’s for a walima and the colors again are off-white/emerald green/orange.
Another issue he’s having is picking out a nice sherwani design for the Shaadi. He doesn’t want anything too flashy or with too much embroidery. He wants something looking more simple, but classy and clean. He prefers something other than the usual beige or white sherwani. His fiance is wearing Mirchi Red(the way his mom described it, lol), and he wants something that can go with it but it doesn’t have to match. He mentioned a dark color sherwani may look nice like black or midnight blue? Any pics/ideas?
If you can help with any of the above points, please do! He meets with the wedding planner(who is a Caucasian lady not familiar with desi traditions) in 2 weeks and he wants to show her what he wants…Thanks a bunch!
Re: Help! Need backdrop, decor, and sherwani ideas/pics!
k, here’s my take on it:
stage and backdrop in orange and gold primarly would be lovely. he could use ivory as the neutral there as white would be too stark. adding in bronze as a metallic would also work very well and he can always incorporate natural greenery (like leaves and roses together as opposed to roses on branches alone) to get that little hit of green in there. see this link for the general feel- candle lined aisles - Google Search
orange calla lilies and roses are beautiful together. depending on his venue, he could get away with something more minimalist (sheer drapes, lots of branches, candles in hanging vases, fewer flowers) or he might need to go more elaborate (bigger floral arrangements, richer fabrics for the backdrop like velvet).
aisle runners- pillars of tall glass vases of varying heights line the aisle on either side with pillar candles inside. he could strew orange rose petals amongst them for something very lush. in this case, its all about quantity. the more vases, candles and rose petals he can line up, the better the look. if there are too few, i don’t believe the minimalist look would work. the candles can be ivory, gold or orange. see this link for lots of visuals: candle lined aisles - Google Search
it would also help to have an actual aisle runner, possibly in white or ivory to create a proper aisle as opposed to making one visually with the candles.
i’m always pro-edible favors. people don’t need another vase to take home. how about a candy bar per person with a custom wrapper? http://www.whimsywraps.com/ its pretty cost-effective and people get candy. win!

I absolutely love the idea of a black sherwani and want my dulha to wear it too at our shadi. I will be wearing gold and red and I agree that combination is lovely.

SGC, you've come to the rescue once again! Thanks for the pag tip too, Demesne! I'm sure my friend will be relieved to finally have some direction and ideas. He meets with his planner next week so this will really help him. Thanks again and feel free to add more ideas if you have any...

Hey GroomDoc-
I didn’t read everyone else suggestions, so apologies if mine are repetative. I saw white/green and wanted to chime in.
This past summer that was the color scheme for my brothers Valima.
Bro said I want a Modern Sleek Look, the entire stage White. Bhabi was going to wear green. So, I basically created a white out in the hall - Entire hall was draped in white curtains, with the one behind the bride & groom in cascade fashion; the stage was white, the steps on either side were white, dance floor white, all white linens, white chivari chairs and white stage furniture. For the furniture, we kept it very simple. Didn’t want any other couch other than what the couple was to sit on. So we opted for cubes on either side of their High back two seater.
The green pop was - we had over a dozen tall calla lilies as centerpieces. On the two main family/friend tables we had alternating short & tall set up. We didn’t have any rose boutinerre for the men. We had Calla Lilly ones made for our family member men, brothers closest friends, and all the men from bride side. We then had green uplights around the room
Their sweetheart table was off the stage to the side, decorated with white & green flowers, so they could eat, somewhat out of the limelight.
Lastly- their names written in Urdu were projected onto either side of the stage against the white curtains
You can PM me and I can give you more info on other ideas.
Re: Help! Need backdrop, decor, and sherwani ideas/pics!
Ps - Bhabi wore Red/purple combo at shaadi. Brother had black sherwani and red qulla. Rode in on a white horse.
:D Classic. Black Sherwani All The Way!!!
Re: Help! Need backdrop, decor, and sherwani ideas/pics!
Thanks for all the additional ideas and pics!
Demesne, I forwarded your pics over to my friend and he's gotten a lot of ideas from them. Thanks again for all your help!
Gigabyte, your brother and bhabhi should thank you b/c you did a great job with everything - the place looks awesome. You definitely kept it sleek and kept the green and white noticeable without making it too overbearing. Is your brother the one who did the cool dance at his mehndi? And their shaadi theme was cars/car show room? I think I saw a video of it(they're all over the internet) and everything looked awesome, props to you guys if I'm talking about the same family!

:D , yep, that was us! LoL, I thought it was just on our photographers site & the dance is on youtube. It was an amazing couple of months, Allhamdulillah.
The wedding was in a Car museum and the video highlights our photographer/videographer did all on his own, we didn't even know the song till we played it at the
Valima :) Samson productions is amazing, mA!
And this summer we do it all over again for our remaining siblings, iA! More dances to come from my brother & his group of merrymen :D
