Help me plan a mehndi/dholki

Ok girls I need your help and QUICK. I’ve been assigned the task of throwing a surprise dholki/mehndi for a friend who at the last minute decided to forgo the nikkah and just have a rukhsathi.. so she’s gonna be leaving for the UK at the start of February… I’ve basically got 3 weeks time to get this thing organized…

I know nothing about planning a wedding (other than what ive seen here)… we’re getting her mehndi jora so the decorations and background will obviously be matched according to all that… me and my friends were just talking and we’re thinking light purple/lilac with ivory and hot pink borders sprinkled with gold kaam throughout the kameez a hot pink shalwar… in my mind I see it working, but I dont know what kind of suit to make it… anyone have recommendations?

Oh and songs list I need major help on… I have no idea what songs are outdated and whats appropriate for a mehndi these days.

Food and stuff someone else is in charge of… but im open to ideas here anyway so I could share them with her as well

Thankoooo

Re: Help me plan a mehndi/dholki

Riya,

I'll send you a digital file of a mehndi song packet I've created. Just PM me an address I can send it to.

How come you're getting her the clothes?

If you want it to be the typical mehndi colors, yellows, oranges, and greens are most dominant. Though of course you can do anything these days.

Re: Help me plan a mehndi/dholki

@ Sahar.. Can you please send me that file?

Re: Help me plan a mehndi/dholki

We’re getting her the clothes cuz its gonna be a surprise mehndi… oh gosh I hope it works out ok… do you think its a good idea to make it a surprise mehndi or do you think itll not turn out so great that way? :bummer:

I think u shud tell her for sure! Surprise dholki's are alright but mehndi's no no! How about pretty pinks and yellows for the outfit? Keep lots of fresh flowers.. and flower jewellery..

Mehndi thaals.. ubtan.. oil and mithai

Re: Help me plan a mehndi/dholki

Tashfeen - Sure, just send me your email address.

Riya - Are you getting a mehndi jora stitched from scratch? I feel it’s safer to look around and find one that looks nice and has been designed already. Generating one from your imagination is risky, if you don’t have a tailor that has a sense of design, etc.

Also, why a surprise mehndi? She’s not expecting to have a mehndi?

I think yellow and some other color would be nice – unless you think she’s averse to yellow? It could look nice with pink, orange, olive, emerald green, turqoise, teal, red, maroon, etc. Or some combo of these other colors would be good too.

At the surprise dholki for my cousin I did in October, we had lots of yellow, orange, green, and red decorations. She thought it was an Eid party, so she was dressed up. I made a stage area with lots of orange and pink dupattas. Around the stage were white chaddars for all the girls to sit and sing and gather around the bride. I printed the song packets in bright colors. We had colorful cushions and things to make it festive. We didn’t get a chance to practice any dances for it, but that’s another idea. I added artificial and real flowers to the decor, etc. I also made a platter of desserts and fruits to feed her. And necklaces and bracelets of fresh flowers. Her wedding was in Pak, so I wanted this to be like a mehndi/mayon function for all the people who couldn’t attend.

Re: Help me plan a mehndi/dholki

Sahar thats a great stage you made!!

Re: Help me plan a mehndi/dholki

Yes Sahar, that is a really nice stage. Love it.

For mehndi day...Im thinking wearing a churidar pajama and peshwaz. Im going all out and dressing up even though it will be a small function. Mine will be a moss green because I adore that color. But for mehndi day...usually you have a green and/or yellow outfit right?

Also, you should arrange for fresh mithai, trays/thaals to serve it in, decorations for the trays, some paan leaves for the mehndi, trays for the mehndi, the overall theme you want for the mehndi, stage decor, flowers, flowers, flowers!!!!!!!!

And get that song packet from Sahar and dhol.

This is all I can think of now...

Re: Help me plan a mehndi/dholki

I LOVE churidaars for mehndis as well. I wore an angharka with a churidaar for my valima, so I wore a chunri sharara on my mehndi, but I do think the churidaar pajama look is great. With a paranda/chutla and everything. So cute!

It would be a good idea to get a playlist together of some classic and some modern shadi songs, to have playing in the background throughout the evening (except if/when there is singing).

Re: Help me plan a mehndi/dholki

recently i threw my friend’s mendhi party we chose a color scape and made mendhi posters, mind you she’s gujurati and the only ppl at her mendhi were young girls no aunties but we had mendhi cones, designs galore for ppl to do mendhi with or show the artist, and lots of yum arabic food bc that was our theme. this stuff can work for a dholki easily!

anyhow i like how my posters turned out
here’s how we decorated our friend’s place:
