..ermm..I am a bibliophile but i am currently in a strange situation for me of not having a good novel to read. Therefore please can you recommend one to me quickly!
I have got Tehmina Durrani’s “Blasphemy” but I will read that in a single day so that is not much help…
umm...what kind of novels are u into? i've bought around 15 novels over the past few months..all of them classic literature...Jane Austen, Emily Bronte, Charlotte Bronte etc
i'll recommend a few later once i know the kind ur into
thanks for the replies so far BUT although i do read “classics” I am currently in the mood for something more contemporary.
As for what I read–i am a bibliophile and read a lot of genres (talking of fiction only now)–historical novels, sci-fi, fantasy, thrillers, drama, urdu, romantic novels (but NOT trashy romanctic ones!!), horror, crime…anything really
Just read Rosamunde Pilcher's Winter Solstice and enjoyed it very much. I have read all her works! Another great author is Barbara Kingsolver - just read Prodigal Summer, and am trying to negotiate my way through The Poisonwood Bible, a much more involved story than her other books - but all excellent reading.
Asif - You stated that you enjoy a number of different genres... I would suggest reading (if you haven't already) Eleanor Craig's P.S. You're not listening, (it's non-fiction, you might find it a bit old as it was written during the late 1970s I think, but I think you still might like it - definitely a tear-jerker). Um, as far as historical books go, try checking out Long Walk to Freedom (Nelson Mandela's autobiography). An excellent and informative read.
Asif, mitti paao on angrezi novels.....angrezooN ko kiya pata hum desiyooN ke taste ka...hain???
try to find "Gunnah ki RaateiN" by M.A.Rahat....aur parh ke mujhay bhijhwa dena, allah sawaab de ga....:)
per bateesi andar rakhiye aap, mujhay eik saal ho gya hein dhoondhtay book ko…itni asaani se nai milnay wali:)
i haven’t read Gita Govind in angrezi so do post some excerpt in poetry forum…and try to find it in urdu too…Urdu mein paRhnay ka apna maza hei…look at this line…
“jab janoobi pahaRooN se hawaeiN aati hein
aur apne saath muhabbat ke devta ko laati hein
jab phoolooN ke anbaar mehjoor chahnay waloon
ke diloon mein shigaaf kerne ke liay phooth paRte hein
tou wo tumhari juddai se malool ho jata hei
tu us ke liay jangli haar se araasta ho
ke thanDi kirnooiN wala chaand bi us ko shola bar’andaam ker deta hei
wo goya ke murda hei
muhabbat ke teer se ghayal ho ker
wo baRi badnaseebi se shikwa’sanj hota hei
wo malool hei…”
Asif, if you are in a mood for something different, read “Collective Poems by C.V. Cavafi” (translation). For a more thrilling eccentric work read “Divan-e-Nedim” (he was an Ottoman court poet). There are other great and classic literary works on homoerotic poetry and prose.
NYA–how do you know the poetry is homoerotic–remember in the Islamic world it was customary for male poets to write poetry from the female’s point of view. Nowadays ppl read their own intepretations into poetry written at a time when such interpretations were simply not true–in fact absurd! To quote an extreme example some sick individuals have claimed that Rumi’s poetry (rahmatullah alayhi) is homoerotic. May Allah forgive me for even writing such a sentence!
That is the problem with someone from the Western academic tradition trying to interpret and understand much of the poetry of the Islamic world–esp. mystical poetry.
Asif meray piyaray Bhai. In my books, homoerotic is not an offensive or abominable word. I am assuming that you haven’t been thru Dewan-i-Nadim yet. Why don’t you read it and then let’s discuss it at a higher level.
