Help a Gori have a nice party?!

Hello,

My husband’s cousin is coming this weekend…he is religious and fasting. His wife is expecting so she cannot fast…they also have a 2 1/2 yr old girl. I would like to have a nice dinner for them when they come…

I’m not that great with Paki food but I was thinking of making a traditional american thanksgiving-type feast - roast turkey with stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, turnips, onions in white sauce, green beans and crescent muffins…

What do you think? If the poor guy doesnt like turkey then he’s going to be REALLY hungry when he leaves here, I want to try to make something that he can/will like…

Instead of turkery make a chicken.

Yeah make some halal chicken. And some sweet dish like gulab jaman, ras malai. Religious guys like sweet dish :D

Daal chawal with achar :yummy:

Always willing to help:

Some pakis don't like turkey as they find it to be quite bland so as Code_Red suggested, Chicken is the way forward.

Dont take this the wrong way, but some of us pakis are very particular about our food and even though the meat may be halal, if it isnt cooked by a muslim, we may not feel comfortable eating it.

For example, in the UK a lot of workplaces that have a lot of muslims working for them try to offer halal options in their restaurants but few muslims tend to eat cos they aren't at ease with the concept.

Having said that, if he is family then he is probably ok with things and no need to worry - no offence intended its just the way things are sometimes!

You can’t be serious mate

Mamaof3, I think you should make the turkey and the traditional thanksgiving feast you had planned, maybe he will appreciate the different food, I know I would. On the side, you could make something like a spinach gratin.

Isn’t there a way to use desi spices on Turkey?

LOlzzzzzzzzzzzz at the Cat-woman

Turkey is bland and u cant change that!! The rest of the stuff sounds pretty delicious to be honest!
But if he is a typical paki then only the spicy stuff will do!

Turkey is yummy .... how can you guys not like it?

Just spice up the turkey Mama like you would with Pakistani food. It should be fine.

Well stuff him and his Paki tastes. If my husband was Italian and my in-laws were visiting, I wouldn't be making pasta and gnocchi for them :p

Catty - lets compromise - stuff the turkey not the paki..

^ I changed my statement slightly :o

so u just wouldnt cook anything for him?

Go to www.foodnetwork.com and lookup Curry in a hurry.

Mamaof3 wifeof1 - DO NOT SPEND TIME MAKING TURKEY for a Pakistani and that too for Iftaari (breaking of fast). I love turkey but it took me a few years. Make Lasagna or some pasta dish instead. Just make sure there is lots of meat in it.

Well, the Pakistanis I know would eat turkey in a heart beat as long as they don't have a problem with eating jhukta. So, if Halal is an issue, by all means go with Chicken. To be even more safe, I suggest you cook fish.

I think my mom has a recipe for a desi-style turkey. I’ll ask her for the recipe, and if she actually takes me seriously, I’ll be able to actually get it from her.

desi style turkey?. hot spices don't complement turkey. The bird is supposed to be eaten bland.

Naah..my mom put tandoori spices on the trukey and roasted the bird to perfection...best turkey I've ever eaten!

mamaof3, i am not sure how long your husband's cousin and his wife has been living in those surroundings..but i am going to tell you the likings of people from backhome. Lot of pakistanis in backhome don't eat turkey. Personally, i have never tasted turkey either. If they are particular about their meat..you can get halal meat. People usually don't like boiled vegetables.

So, these are some recommendations..either bake some chicken or fry them..you can even use shake and bake type things for chicken and the potatoes..since they have a kid..i would say that you should have french fries instead of mashed potatoes.

how about instead of green beans..you make some salad..like coleslaw or macroni salad.

Like someone suggested..people backhome don't mind eating pasta, spagethi...pizza or macroni with minced meat..so these are some options..

If you do really want to surprise them you can buy tandori masala from international section of grocery stores..and bake the chicken.

Also, you can have dates and mixed fruits while your husband's cousin break his fast..he'll be really happy.

You can do one more thing..take strawberry nesquick syrup and mix it with milk and sugar and serve as a drink.

Hope, that helps.

I completely agree. Turkey spiced up is :yummy:
