Healthy Liftystyle?

How do you cook healthy?

Re: Healthy Liftystyle?

u mean techniques or overall
because it has atleast 3 components
- what you cook
- how you cook
- what you cook with

less oil, better oil,
better ingredients, leaner meats, organic, hormone free, antibiotic free etc
low heat longer cooking rather than high heat charring etc
dont overcook vegetables
eat many things raw,
better cooking utensils..yeah none of those with the nonstick coating peeling off

Re: Healthy Liftystyle?

When I want samosa.

I ride my bike 6 km to smaosa shop. Buy one samose to veg pakora thinge.
Eat it. then ride back 8 km. (through the lake)

Not too hard to tell that I don't crave samosa very often. :D

Re: Healthy Liftystyle?

Well from my reading of a few books and many many articles over internet (mainly on bodybuilding.com, and johnstonefitness.com) i found out that foods should be eaten in their most natural way possible which is you should either steam them or boil them or you can eat them with out cooking at all like fruits or some veggies like carrots and bell peppers(shimla mirch) which can be eaten without cooking.

**BUT** you shouldn't be asking, you should be telling. what do you think???

The thing is, in our desi culture and lifestyle...we just arent as conscious as we should be about our eating and cooking.

Diabetes and high blood pressure are rampant among us and get passed down generation after generation.

Here are a few ways:

  • Try to use olive oil (even this in moderation, it is after all oil) and AVOID deep frying as much as possible
  • Stay AWAY from fast food - it really is poison for our bodies
  • Use less salt in your cooking...you might notice the difference in the beginning but after a few weeks it will become normal for you
  • Always ask for lean meat when buying meat
  • When washing chicken, try to cut off excess fat yourself
  • Stay away from fatty breading
  • Push fruits and vegetables in your diets as much as possible - we have forgotten how wonderful these things are. After a while, you will crave your fresh fruit and veggies again
  • Use your grills when you can...its an excellent and delicious way of cooking meat and veggies...avoid charring please. Anything can be grilled...from meats to veggies to fruit!

These are just a few ways to start and also ideas we have implemented in our household to accomodate my father...who is also a diabetic and heart patient.

All three X2

I know people who have replaced regular oil with olive oil but use that soooo much they might as well be using regular oil!

add 'how much you eat' to that list. lots of people may start with healthy but quantity can make it unhealthy.

Re: Healthy Liftystyle?

I try to cut back salt and oil from food as too much is not good. Also have salad with food wherever possible. Not overcooking veggies.

Also, it's important to control portion sizes as TLK has said - put the food on to your plate and don't add anything once you have finished. It's no good picking at the serving dishes as its harder to keep control of how much you've eaten and because there's so much choice it's harder to feel 'full.'

the question was how you cool healthy thats why i did not address the eating part
but you are right, and one key way to do this is to not cook massive quantities, if you dont cook a heap, you cant eat a heap :)

Re: Healthy Liftystyle?

^ How about the size of dinner plates? I read a suggestion that people should use 9" plates at home instead of 10"

Re: Healthy Liftystyle?

and flat...the more bowl shaped the more it can fill up :D

Re: Healthy Liftystyle?

-cut off the fat on meats
-use olive oil........I actually started to use Pam Spray, but noticed that some salans just really need that much oil!!
-wheat flour vs white
-cut up salads with every meal we can
---------as someone mentioned (aka X2) .....one thing we definitely need to work on is changing our bowl shaped plates into flat ones........

Re: Healthy Liftystyle?

Extra virgin olive oil
Very little oil
No meat
Lots of beans and lentils
Fruits and veggies - though, I don't eat as much as I need to.
Whole wheat.
Little junk - once a week, sometimes once in two weeks.

I got to cut down on salt. To save time, I use canned beans - I got to stop. I also need to eat fruits and veggies more. Ever since I went vegetarian, I have been paying extra attention to getting protein in my diet, and not as much to fruits and veggies.

Which olive oil? I mean extra virgin or any other?

Re: Healthy Liftystyle?

All great advice.

now can we get it through the thick stupid skulls of certain desi people that eating once a day wont make you lose weight or be any healthier? It really annoys me when idiots give this type of advice.

Re: Healthy Liftystyle?

folks, dont get on extra virgin olive oil bandwagon
it has a place and a use, and its great
but its not the best for cooking

and the no meat thing is dodgy, you need protein and yes you can protein from other sources but it varies on how complete it is, read up on it
