Healthy eating , is it for real?

Re: Healthy eating , is it for real?

sorry but that is one ridiculous advice.

Re: Healthy eating , is it for real?

Kakee… Honestly… Leave this one for the moms…not cuz tjey are moms but cuz they have gone through pregnancy…

Its nice to want to help out but its impossible to give advice on something like this… Its truly one of “been there done that” kinda thing

Had u gone through pregnancy, you would have never said any of what u have said in this thread… Cuz u would have known just how much of bs itis :cb:

Meri naiive timatar

CB: woman… eat it all and more. 2 pregnancies and i used to eat the house down. And yes it ncluded a bit of junk too. I was hungry within an hour of eating and it was not the kind of hunger that goes away with milk or juice (ahem kakee), i needed FOOD!! And food i would eat.

I gained more with midget even though i ate more with genie… Every pregnancy is diff.. Every baby is diff… How ure body adjusts food is also diff in each pregnancy…

So girl…eat without feeling guilty…if u find ureself going for that hamburger…go for it! As long as its not.a daily thing…its all good.

Also… Almonds are a very good thing to eat if u have heart burn during pregnancy…5 everyday. Combats it real well.

I wish. Could tell u of some miacle dish or ingredient that would keep u full… But i couldnt come up ith any in either of my pregnancies…

:hugz:

Re: Healthy eating , is it for real?

I had horrible heartburn in the last few weeks and was not able to eat proper meals and was always super hungry...Although I used to eat desi food but for late evening hunger strikes I often used to eat breakfast cereal. For some reason they did not give me too much heartburn and filled me up too.Don't go for the glorified candy variety of cereal, something which is on the healthier side should be good.I used to love Raisin bran and another local granola cereal with dried bananas and almonds and don't tell anyone but I looooved Coco pops too...:D (the chocolate flavored rice crispies).

I am not a fan of fruit smoothies, but if you want you can try them. Will be healthy, consisting of dairy & fruit and fulfilling too..!

Re: Healthy eating , is it for real?

not preggers

Re: Healthy eating , is it for real?

CB…there are other sources of protein than meat…consider an alternative.
I remember being hungry 24x7. No matter what I ate…and there were several things that I could simply not stand the sight and/or smell of. It goes with the condition.

kakee…if you remember nothing from GS when you are pregnant just remember the one advice that you have given to OP here…to drink water/milk and that this will fill her up…try this when your time comes and do come back just to let us know how it worked out for you. :cb:

Re: Healthy eating , is it for real?

not preggers

Re: Healthy eating , is it for real?

I think the point is that when you are pregnant it is very difficult to go overboard because your body, generally speaking, doesn't really allow you to. Those things that one can manage to hold down become very limited and even when you can eat them, they tend to cause all sorts of other issues like reflux, constipation, etc., etc.

As khawateen mentioned.....it is very difficult to understand this unless you have lived it.....

Re: Healthy eating , is it for real?

Yeah, honestly just eat whatever you want. Don't go overboard on one thing...if you eat roti and parathas and whatnot, that's fine. Mix up your fruits and veges throughout the day for snacking. Your body is extremely efficient when you're pregnant, so it's good to eat a variety of stuff. You will be hungry most of the time, there's no way around it. Just don't reach for a Big Mac every time... simple.

I've been pretty opposite with my pregnancy, wasn't very hungry in the beginning but now at 37 weeks...wow, every hour I NEED to stuff my face. Problem is, I don't have enough room to do so lol. Always hungry and if I eat too much...I get heartburn. I do what chips6 suggested, breakfast cereal. Less heartburn, healthy and pretty filling.

Re: Healthy eating , is it for real?

kakee, no matter how much you might want to eat healthy (and most pregnant ladies really truly do), as muzna pointed out, sometimes it is impossible to keep anything down when you are pregnant. you also cannot know the impact of a pregnancy craving unless you've actually been pregnant. i survived 5.5 months of my 40 weeks + 4 days pregnancy on chicken corn soup, which is basically just canned corn, shredded chicken and chicken stock all mixed together. sounds gross, right? but i used to slam on the tabasco sauce and it was the most delicious thing i have ever had AND the ONLY thing that i was not throwing right back up. every.other.thing literally would come out within the hour, if not sooner. later, i was able to keep down a bit more but it was mostly boiled eggs drowning in tabasco sauce (serious craving, that was), blood oranges (up to 6-7 a day at its strongest point), and the occasional rice dish. not a healthy diet at all, but i still gained 20 lbs, and i gave birth to a VERY healthy mash'Allah 9.5 lb baby.

pregnancy is a funny thing like that. you can have all sorts of expectations about how you are going to do this, do that and the other, and same goes for labor, but what you least expected is what is probably going to happen despite your best intentions. its not yours or anyone else's fault, its just that you can never anticipate how your body will react to growing another human inside it unless you're actually there. i hope one day you do go on to want and have lots of healthy little kakee & mr. kakee's running around, and i hope when that happens you do have the pregnancy you have envisioned for yourself, but its always good to keep your options- and your mind- open to anything.

Re: Healthy eating , is it for real?

Before I got pregnant I read alot and saw my sisters and cousins going thru their pregnancies and gaining weight etc.. I thought I had it down and I used to tell my cousin what kakee mentioned that I will eat balanced diet and will eat healthy etc etc ... When I got pregnant forget about watching what I eat and stay away fom this and that.. It's what suits me and what I crave... I agre with khwateen that that unless you have experienced it you will not know what it's like...
Don't take me wrong.. Have been reading our comments in different threads in parenting and find it odd that a person who is not even married is sooo active in parenting form when it comes to giving advice...you should stick to wedding forum cuz that's a next bug step in your life... Once again I hope you dont take any offense by this

Re: Healthy eating , is it for real?

I just want to start off by saying, I want hardees.

Ok, now that that is out of the way: CB you need around 300 extra calories a day. That is like one icecream :P so forget eating for two. I found that having milk with cereal (anything from kelloggs) in the morning is not only healthy but keeps me going. I cannot however refrain from eating at least every six hours. I get super hungry. I get what you are saying abt not being full till you have REAL food however. I found that snacking slowly on carrots helps too. Or slowly on apples. WHILE eating them I don't feel hungry.

I have begun making pure juices. And I drink those down. Those are made without sugar or any additives and are not only healthy but keep me going for a while.

Try having a date or two in the day. That helps loads. And it is Sunnah too

Re: Healthy eating , is it for real?

I'm a fruit addict, so i know i'm getting that part right during my pregnancy. As for other things, i just eat whatever i can (and the list for that is quite limited). I've generally hated meat, or saluns, or much of the desi food we eat.

How do you like your pastas? I can have a bit of alfredo and it helps to fill me up Alhumdulillah.

Also for proteins, as i'm taking close to zilch meat, i try to eat at least 2 boiled eggs a day. I'm really slacking in the dairy department too... kya karoun? first it was the never ending nausea and now its heartburn :(

Re: Healthy eating , is it for real?

oh and did someone mention Hardees? :D

once or twice a fortnight isn't bad right?

Re: Healthy eating , is it for real?

Thanks so much ladies for the beautiful advise …right so now some concerns I think I should talk them out :

Weight gain:
I am not at all worried about it as long as its healthy weight i am putting on. In a different forum gori women mentioned that if you are gaining all over, then its the wrong kind of weight .. but if its on specific areas then its the right kind of weight … how true that is , i have no clue … but I related it to the fact that if i eat sweets/cakes/cookies/burgers/icecreams etc , I will be putting on the wrong kind of weight …

Actually i dont know why I am even looking at the weight perspective  I am just getting stuck between the right and the wrong weight and I think i need to free myself of this myth ?

Cravings:
Ohh my god , I am so so so glad some of you even mentioned that you felt hungry within an hour of eating food :cb: I almost felt guilty declaring that but am feeling so much better now hearing it all from you guys … I am trying to take in as much cereal as i can .. I have tried alternating proteins from lentils and channa’s but everyone from Pakistan keeps telling me I am not doing justice to the baby .. and my issue is I cant freaking seem to down any kind of meat even if i try the hardest :frowning: and now that my iron levels have fallen down to 7, I am getting stressed that i am not eating right ..

Lusi, I had been on daal chawal too for almost the whole of last three months ! just recently i fell in love with parathas and was having then with every meal of the day .. I think they made me feel full hence why i kept running for them ..

I love the idea that many of you have given me : make a plate with a little of everything and eat it .. that way its no one particular thing going in and making my tummy upset, a bit of everything will sort of balance it all out ..

Re: Healthy eating , is it for real?

Dem said something that I remember making complete sense from my pregnancy…you don’t feel hunger pangs WHEN YOU ARE EATING SOMETHING.

I had this completely irrational fear…dunno where from or how it became lodged in my head but I was petrified of being constipated while i was pregnant…so ammi had told me to have an apple every day if I could. I turned this into a rule…every single day I would eat an apple by cutting it up into slices and placing it in a beautiful crystal dish. I would sit in front of the TV and, very luxuriously, eat that ritual apple.

It turned into such a habit that I started putting different snack items in that crystal dish. This is how I figured out that if I was munching on something every 1/2 hour I wouldn’t get the heartburn. Since my cravings were mostly for fruits I didn’t have too many concerns about eating “healthy”.

I still see the results of what I ate during my pregnancy as Noor will give up candy for fruit any day!

Re: Healthy eating , is it for real?

Today was day two of trying some of the things I had been advised here on the thread and Alhumdullillah looks like things are working positively .. following is what I changed :

  • Instead of eating fruit separately I had an apple along with my breakfast , then an orange and a banana along with my lunch and salad along with dinner .. and I feel so full and not acidic at all .. looks like the fruits havnt caused the acidity these two days :lifey:

  • Also starting on almonds 7 a day ..

  • Still down on meat , so gotta figure out a way to help me eat this stuff :frowning:

Thanks so much guys for all the lovely advise .. I am glad I opened this thread .. or else I would have totally been cringing and hating fruits all through my pregnancy :cb:

Re: Healthy eating , is it for real?

you should do what demi does and make a fruit drink.

Get a blender and blend some apple and carrots and if you want to challenge yourself add some more fruit/veggies and sip through that. If you don’t like the taste you can add honey but not so much that you won’t be able to taste the yummy veggies.

See if these help you

Re: Healthy eating , is it for real?

Here are some substitutes for meat:

120 grams of lean beef contain 25 grams of high quality proteins, almost totally assimilable, unlike the plant proteins, which the body assimilates just in a proportion of 50-65 %. But proteins from the meat can be replaced by various foods.

Proteins are the “bricks” of the organism, and must contain all the essential aminoacids, in precise proportions. Only proteins from eggs, meat, fish and dairy products are complete, that’s why plant proteins must be completed by animal proteins.

  1. About 300 grams of rice mixed with peas can replace a meat piece. When combined, these aliments furnish the essential aminoacids.

  2. Lentil is very rich in protein. 83 grams of lentil have as much protein as 120 grams of beef. Its nutritional value is boosted if combined with other vegetables and cereals.

  3. Just 72 grams of peanuts contain the same protein amount like in 120 grams of beef.

  4. Parmesan cheese has a double content of proteins compared to red meat.

  5. 190 grams of pasta bring the same amount of nutrients (but not proteins) as 120 grams of beef. To increase their nutritional values, pastas must be accompanied by cheese and vegetables.

  6. The soy sprouts are much poorer in proteins than the soy beans: 336 grams of sprouts have the same amount of protein as 120 g of beef.

  7. Amongst fruits, avocados are the richest in fats and proteins. Yet, 473 g of avocado pulp contain the proteins found in 120 g of beef.

  8. Just 130 grams of walnuts have the same amount of protein like 120 g of beef.

  9. Common bean contains 23.6 % proteins: more than meat! Still, it misses some essential amino acids.

  10. Twenty five slices of whole wheat bread contain 25 grams of protein. Biological value of the bread increases if consumed with butter or milk, especially at breakfast.

Re: Healthy eating , is it for real?

I will eat what ever I want. But that doesn’t mean I’ll be eating chocolate cake for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
I’m gonna eat what ever I crave, work out, and eat some more. No way I’ll be surviving on smoothies and ghaas poos. No way :naraz:
Right now I’m craving Persian rice and baked chicken :frowning:

Re: Healthy eating , is it for real?

Muzna , thats extremely helpful , thanks so much … I am gonna take some of the tips from that article and start applying it at the earliest :lifey:
