What does healthy eating mean during pregnancy? I have tried the following and failed and am now left in a limbo :
Fruits.. I tried snacking on fruits but it makes me so hungry even if I eat proper desi food immediately afterwards, I feel extreme painful hungry pang returning every hour .. So I gave up the idea of snacking on fruits ..
vegies .. like salads, carrots, cucumbers etc .. I tried having upto three full bowls of it and they dont seem to fill me up .. is this strange or what , but I feel like i have eaten nothing despite having a huge bowl full of salad ..
Meat .. I am not really a huge fan of non veg .. but I still tried for the sake of getting enough protein and I get seriously put off with the taste of meat these days , cant seem to have it at all .. so i have almost given up on it ..
I think what they mean by healthy eating is eating well balanced meals that have nutrition, not empty calories.
So try to incorporate grains and protein and veggies and healthy fats into each of your meals. Stay away from sodas and junk food. Eat fruits with your meal, like right after. For snacks, go for yoghurt or assorted nuts, etc.
What I see is that when girls are pregnant, they think they are eating for 2 which really isn't the case. Your growing baby isn't a whole human being as big as you so it needs good nutrition but not as many calories as you do. So people overeat and put on unnecessary weight that slows them down and is hard to take off later on. Your goal is to stay healthy and provide enough sources of nutrition to your baby.
Yes thanks so much Niksik for highlighting this fact about eating for two people .. because i am not much of an eater I am finding it quite awkward and irritating that my body is asking me for food all the freaking time … but when i talk to people in Pakistan they keep telling me you are eating for two people and i get pressurized to drink a few litres of milk every day
Ok so back to my issue .. I have a feeling fruit is causing me acidity hence why i feel so irritated by it .. Yoghurt is the same, I tried eating it so many times and fail every single time .. however in dairy , I am still going strong with milk and cheese alhumdullillah ..
And so , to kill my hunger pangs i eat our desi food like rice or chapati and yeah paratha’s so grains are all sorted … but its not healthy food, its pure carbs going in …
do you eat just that or eat a plate mixed with all three..?
What do you mean Kakee?
If you are asking about fruit, I usually chop about 5-6 varieties of fruit in a bowl and eat it ..
If you are asking about salads, well, i get strong hunger pangs every two hours but i have confined myself to eat proper meal only three times a day , rest of the time, I tried snacking on nuts, salads etc .. but when they dont fill me up , i end up sitting here almost crying over my hunger pangs :(
If fruit causes acidity, then have it along with your meals. Carbs are alright as long as you don't have gestational diabetes (like I had). Just make sure you get enough protein as that's the building block for the little bacha inside of ya. Have it in whatever form you can tolerate.
you know what, just eat whatever you feel like and whenever. Feeling hungry isnt abnormal. The threat of two people is fine on you because you were not a good eater to begin with. So yay, the two for you would be like 1.25 for anyone else which is obviously normal. Just eat, drink and be merry because this time is not going to come back sooner
hmm niksik , I feel so left out on the Protein bit  I need to push myself harder to eat some form of meat …
Kakee, no no , not all day , like everyone told me when you feel hungry try to eat fruits / vegies/yoghurts/ nuts as a snack … and so I tried “snacking” on these things and looks like it was effort in vain
^ and then you tell us that its only the pointing belly you have got! thorha gain karne se you wont become a baloon. Jaise moti hogi waise patli b hojana
a bowl of oatmeal and berries with a tiny dash of maple syrup or honey is very yummy and filling as a breakfast. it'll also give you lots of energy.
like others have said, its not about eating too much of one and ignoring the other; just try to make up a plate that has some meat, some veggies and some carbs in it. and eat on demand until you're full. nuts are great for snacking too or to keep in your purse if you're on the go.
cb, i think when i was pregnant, i had chawal daal or roti daal for a month or two as i could not digest anythingelse. cheese is good, with fruits you just have to try and see what you can digest and haw doesnt gives you any acidity. i did not eat any meat for a good 5 months i think.
^ almonds have good fats. and no, of course you shouldn't be chowing down on whatever you feel like but i don't think she's been advised to do so by anyone here? its all about eating a balanced diet, as and when you're hungry. being pregnant doesn't need you to eat double what you are currently, but you do need an extra 300 calories a day so its ok to eat more than what you normally do. its an expected part of pregnancy, in fact, as is gaining weight. in a healthy pregnancy you SHOULD be gaining weight and between 20-25 lbs. if you are worried about getting fat, you shouldn't have gotten pregnant. its an absolutely ridiculous thought.
^^This...
and only milk and water does not help curb the hunger pangs or cravings (which btw are very real in pregnancy..!!) in pregnnacy. It is a normal thing to feel hungry more than usual when being pregnant ..>!!
when i was unable to digest stuff, my doc said eat whatever you can and when you can. my sister who is a doc but not an obgyn was mortified that my mom gave me few aloo parathas to take home as it was one of the things that i could digest, she was having a hard time accepting that i was unable digest more of the healthier stuff untill she saw me throwing up pretty much on everything i ate.few things i snacked alot on were cashews, almonds, raisins, cheese, carrots, and sometimes grapes. in dairy i could digest yougurt and icecream. for a long time my lunch was daal chawal n yougurt.
cb, nuts are good, snack on them if you can digest them. you might find veggies easier on you then fruits...try carrots and celery with or without dressing.
