The opening poster hasn't indicated how conservative the guy it.
Perhaps he's just not comfortable discussing sex with a na-mahrem girl (Islamically, being engaged has no religious status).
Of course, for this to be true, he has to be colossally stupid enough to decide that feigning ignorance is a better approach than being truthful....
...but then again, girls are known to have the effect of making men colossally stupid.
