If there is no option left then try your refrigerator. You prolly never heard of it but it works. I tried it with my friends HDD about 8 months ago and his drive is still working with out any problems.
Put the HD in the freezer. After 8 to 10 hours remove it and let it thaw for one or two hours in room temperature. Install it in your pc and see if the bios recognises it.
Good Luck!
oh, and dont forget to wrape it in a plastic bag before you put it in freezer.
PD, the hard disk might have died because of power surge or a controller problem which is sending some bizzare signals, check that before you plugin new drive. It might be that the controller does not support that (since you mentioned you have old computer)
IF your Hard disk is making noise here is what I do
1. Tap it with your hand lightly, that will position heads back to normal
2. Plug it to Power only and keep it connecting disconnecting couple of times
and then let it connected for a while.
If that will not work then there is no use of reformatting as you will continue to receive bad CRC errors and keep on losing data on it.
PeeDeee, zero1 is actually right. You should try that too. It might even work. I have also heard about this putting HDD in the freezer, and it actually worked. I never tried myself though.. (Allah kissi jo yeh din na dikhaye) (:D)
keep em coming guys, cuz i m planning to try all of em out. I am sure one of you will outsmart the other person's idea. And, soon I will have all my data back with my shweet hdd.
Piddy: Whats more important to you? The data in the HDD or the HDD itself? If you just want to recover the data then what you need is a HDD diagnostic/forensic type tupperware. Lets see what I can do.
