my stupid 80gig hdd died last week please drop ur head and pray for it :(, stupid thing wont let me reinstall windows on it, even bios is not detecting it. Its maxtor product, and I have had it since last 2 yrs. Got any tools for my query?
Thanx in adv, I have done everything I can do. But if its showing in boot up then how could I even install anything on it. I have tried changing master to slave, slave to master, but nooooooooooo, it doesn’t budge. I wish i can hit on shop keeper’s head, who i bought this from
most hard drives come with a 3 year warranty. See if you can get in touch with maxtor.
I like WD more than maxtor. I have had two die on me in the past. Usually, there is an indicator telling you that the hd is going to go. It starts making noices months before it eventually gives up. Did you notice any noice in your case? If not, I would suggest that you should put this hard drive on another machine or check another hard drive on this machine make sure that u don't have some other hardware related issue (i.e. controller card, cable etc.)
dont be too hasty to declare it dead. might be some life in it still.. try something.. But as long the bios doesnt detect it, little can be done about it.
I kind of notice some weird noises, and I have two hdd in this pc i kind of connected them as master and slave then they started giving me some probs so I d/c one and kept intact with other one. And both of them are maxtors, I have had this hdd that is in my use right now. Since last 8 yrs; however, I am hearing some noises from this one too, but its not giving me as prob as the one that died on me did.
I know its not controller or cables. To be really honest, I know my pc is way too old now. But, I have maintained it, and thats the reason I don’t want to waste money on a new comp. I am too attach to this one :D, you can say I have done everything with this pc and still its loyal to me.
you name it i have done it bro, its not working yaar. what should i do, its like I am losing not only my data my entire life work in it :(. Stupid thing had to die on me eh don’t forget to come to its funeral. Now I need a hug
Get another HD, install your OS on it when plug this drive in (make sure the jumpers show it as slave HD) and then see if you are able to connect it. You might be able to pull all of your data out but any e-mails in MS Outlook.
I know exactly how it feels been there myself..
I had this SATA drive from Maxtor, not so old even. And one day while I was away damn Norton started a Virus scan, and when I got back it was stuck while scanning and so I had reset, and since then I tried everything, it was not even dead like in your case. But I could never find out what happened. All data lost, it was 120Gig.
I learnt my lesson, now I wont let it happen to me again, I backup all important data on DVD’s and stuff.
I have a batch file that kicks off every night (scheduled) and copies everything from a specified folder on hard drive thats new or updated to another mirror folder on a different hard drive. I hate window’s built in backup/restore process. hard drive space is cheap these days, no compression should be needed to save a few bytes.
I have done it, no point in doing anything. Now, it will only hit trash bin stupid thing. Thanks though!
Asif I think norton ghost is pretty good, have you tried that. But batch file might have been scheduled by you. I haven’t used norton ghost except for once in school, I know this cuz my bro in law use this to take care of his company server.
Gizzy bro and all of you tell me if you can figure out this prob, why does comp keep crashing, it justs simply restart on its own. Have reinstall windows again, checked for viruses, I am supposing its a bios problem. Something wrong has happened there, but frequen restarts is kinda crazy, like after every 5 mins.
Ghost is mainly used for creating hard drive images so if ur machine crashed (due to software issues) you can restore an image to get back to a previous state. Could be used for backups too. I use batch files for copying individual folders (vs. the whole hard drives which is what ghost does). I used to use Ghost all the time until I got my hands dirty into the world of vmware. Virtual Machines ROCK!!! I have Linux, 2 instances of Win2k, 3 instances of WinXP, Win98 and WinME all on the same machine without having dual boots.
A few months ago I bought a spanking new WD 200 gb drive, moved most of my installs folder and VPC images to that drive and left it copying. The next day I came back and the duck was dead. Tried everything but no go. So the "making noise" thing doesn't really apply in all instances. The VPC images were of 4 servers, 3 XP workstations and about 6 Linux distros. Not to mention the CD ISO's that i'd saved. Major pain I tell you.
I was sitting on that drive for a few weeks now till Asif just mentioned the 3 yrs warranty, so just filled out an RMA. Should be getting a new drive, but still have rebuild all that lost work. Boo-f***-hoo
oh nice, think I should do that too eh. Personally I still like Win2k; although, winxp is user friendly but it still has way too many bugs in it, that ms hasn’t gotten over yet. I like to work in linux, but I am not the only user at home, and I am not planning to teach anyone either. I know ppl will mess up the whole pc, while I am at work. Yeah norton does that, there was another software, that used to only backup the certain files, I don’t rem the name now. I was using that during my school days.
holly crap, that sucks man! btw where are the forms to fill up the info about hdd. I want them to send me one too, I am too cheap to buy new one any ways
Don’t throw away the drive PD; If you think there’s no way to retrieve the data then you can format the HDD using a good third party software and see if it can find any problems with the drive? It can still be re-usable …
