It is true. He (SAW) never knew how to read nor write.

Re: Hazrat Muhammad(P.B.U.H) knows how to read & write or not?
But First wehi "Iqra" yeni read Allah know everything why Allah says to Hazrat Jibrail Ask Muhammad(P.B.U.H) to read?
Hazrat Adam was selected As Caliph on the base of knowledge so how can Hazrat Muhammad couldn't read and write?
Hazrat Muhammad(P.B.U.H) is teacher of all mankind and how can a teacher neither read nor write?

the less i wana be in discussions like this more they show up …
Simple enough, You have got ur point which makes all the sense in world,
Their were some muslims who wanned to compare themselves with Prophet s.a.w and they coudnt reach the heights that Prophets s.a.w did. Like they coudnt say they had been to miraaj or they coudnt say that They got a revelation from ALLAH last nite coz they rnt Prophets.
However what they cud do was .. say stuff like Prophet s.a.w was illiterate or Prophets was like me and so on. Bascially when they cant bring themselves to those heights they thought by doing this they can Bring levelof Prophet s.a.w down !!! which shows there Imaan on ALLAH and His Prophet s.a.w

Re: Hazrat Muhammad(P.B.U.H) knows how to read & write or not?
no he didnt know how to read or write

he was the teacher of humanity teacher of morals
no he didnt know how to read or write
and if ur talking bout teaching then he wasnt ur college teacher
he wasnt here to teach ppl how to read and write
he was here to teach ppl how to live like humans
he was the teacher of humanity teacher of morals
Good response,
except that he could read and write, and there are many events to support my claim
He signed many agreement, one in which he rubbed off sallallah-o-alehey wasallam with his hand, because none of his companions were ready to do it. he was from a respected family, and its hard to imagine him as illiterate, belonging to that family. His uncle, his cousin (Ali) were all literate people.
Re: Hazrat Muhammad(P.B.U.H) knows how to read & write or not?
Its not hard to imagine that he could not read or write. To the best of my knowledge there is no accont in history that shows Rasoolullah wrote. There were very few people in Arabia that could read or write, so any from prominent families were also not able to read or write.
Re: Hazrat Muhammad(P.B.U.H) knows how to read & write or not?
RASOOLALLAH S.A.W/P.B.U.H WAS BORN WITH MORE KNOWLEDGE THEN ORDINARY HUMAN BEINGS MEANING HE WAS GIFTED AND HE HAD THE POWER
Re: Hazrat Muhammad(P.B.U.H) knows how to read & write or not?
^^ Good answer
The reasons why he did not know how to read and write are
Writing and reading are not pre-req of knolweldge and intelligence.
For you to learn reading and writing, you need a teacher and Allah sned Prophet to us as teacher of all teachers. No human bieng could've teach him anything and no one did.
The fact that he could not read or write is the biggest alibi towards the fact the Quran indeed is the word of God and was not written by any human
how could he recite the Qur’an then? ![]()
What nonsense is this? If he could not write and read, why are we then learning how to write and read? To get knowledge?
Now tel me what have you understood, that you are so amazed
Re: Hazrat Muhammad(P.B.U.H) knows how to read & write or not?
The word Ummia means illiteracy, it is very common in the Arab world, there is even a common expression used in these countries called Mahw Al Ummia, i.e. removing illiteracy, it is a program to educate those who do not read nor write
On the other hand, if we talk logically then we have 3 other possibilities:
1) Those who read but not write
2) Those who write but not read
3) Those who do both
Possibility 1 is valid because there are many who can read but can't write, I know a lot myself in different languages
Possibility no 2 is illogical because there is no way that some one can write Arabic words while can't read it at the same time. We are not talking drawing in here, ok
We have to eliminate possibility 3 because if you read and write then you are not Ummi any more
Therefore and as far as I believe the word Ummi applies to the followings:
1) Those who don't read nor write
2) Those who read but don't write
I.e. any one who belongs to any of the above MUST BE UMMI
The Quran clearly referred to the prophet as an Ummi in two locations (I think), let me bring them all so we leave nothing without pondering on, I brought in the most common translations:
**
157
YUSUFALI: "Those who follow the messenger, the unlettered Prophet, whom they find mentioned in their own (scriptures),- in the law and the Gospel;- for he commands them what is just and forbids them what is evil; he allows them as lawful what is good (and pure) and prohibits them from what is bad (and impure); He releases them from their heavy burdens and from the yokes that are upon them. So it is those who believe in him, honour him, help him, and follow the light which is sent down with him,- it is they who will prosper."
PICKTHAL: Those who follow the messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write, whom they will find described in the Torah and the Gospel (which are) with them. He will enjoin on them that which is right and forbid them that which is wrong. He will make lawful for them all good things and prohibit for them only the foul; and he will relieve them of their burden and the fetters that they used to wear. Then those who believe in him, and honour him, and help him, and follow the light which is sent down with him: they are the successful.
SHAKIR: Those who follow the Messenger-Prophet, the Ummi, whom they find written down with them in the Taurat and the Injeel (who) enjoins them good and forbids them evil, and makes lawful to them the good things and makes unlawful to them impure things, and removes from them their burden and the shackles which were upon them; so (as for) those who believe in him and honor him and help him, and follow the light which has been sent down with him, these it is that are the successful.
158
YUSUFALI: Say: O men! I am sent unto you all, as the Messenger of Allah, to Whom belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth: there is no god but He: it is He That giveth both life and death. So believe in Allah and His Messenger, the Unlettered Prophet, who believeth in Allah and His words: follow him that (so) ye may be guided.
PICKTHAL: Say (O Muhammad): O mankind! Lo! I am the messenger of Allah to you all - (the messenger of) Him unto Whom belongeth the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth. There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and He giveth death. So believe in Allah and His messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write, who believeth in Allah and in His Words, and follow him that haply ye may be led aright.
SHAKIR: Say: O people! surely I am the Messenger of Allah to you all, of Him Whose is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth there is no god but He; He brings to life and causes to die therefore believe in Allah and His messenger, the Ummi Prophet who believes in Allah and His words, and follow him so that you may walk in the right way. **

Re: Hazrat Muhammad(P.B.U.H) knows how to read & write or not?
Peace All
Iqra does not mean 'read'. It means to 'say back'. Infact, it is closer to the meaning of READ in programming language, which means to echo the words back. Reading as we know it is a rather involved process. We look, recognise the letters, interpret the sound and move the mouth and vocalise the symbols. The experience of Muhammad (SAW) was purely inspirational. In the same Surah Iqra ... in the same sitting as the first words were revealed if we read on we will see that there are two mechanisms of gaining knowledge. 1) By the pen 2) Direct teaching from Allah (SWT) i.e. inspiration.
This should be sufficient to show that inspirational learning is a holy experience and learning by the pen is a worldly process.
bro TLK is correct because it adds fuel to the Qur'an being the Word of God.
However, once the Qur'an was with us in this world, it needed to be propagated by the pen because once it is here, it is no longer inspirational to learn or teach it, however, it remains very much inspirational to understand it.
Though Muhammad (SAW) was himself not learned by men, he encouraged the trait of teaching and teaching remains the highest rank of profession in Islam.
Good response, except that he could read and write, and there are many events to support my claim He signed many agreement, one in which he rubbed off sallallah-o-alehey wasallam with his hand, because none of his companions were ready to do it. he was from a respected family, and its hard to imagine him as illiterate, belonging to that family. Peace Robert
Muhammad (SAW) used a stamp/seal to sign his letters. Something being hard to imagine should not be so hard if all authentic sources point to his status of unlettered.

I think (if i'm not mistaken) the command was not to 'read' but to 'recite'. Reading and reciting are two different things.
Re: Hazrat Muhammad(P.B.U.H) knows how to read & write or not?
if the Prophet encouraged reading for others, why didnt he attempt to learn himself?
Re: Hazrat Muhammad(P.B.U.H) knows how to read & write or not?
^Bcoz he didn't need to. Allah was with Him to guide in everything.
Re: Hazrat Muhammad(P.B.U.H) knows how to read & write or not?
thats no answer. the Prophet was sent as an explainer and a guide, his life is the model for Muslims to follow even if he didnt need it for himself...which I dont buy, since Allah's guidance I would presume would be in matters pertaining to the revelation, not for other aspects of spiritual and practical life where learning, reading and writing is invaluable.
also the people he was encouraging to read and write also had direct guidance from the Prophet, so why should they learn?
