Having a sister ............

**Having a sister makes you happier and more optimistic, a new study shows, but the same is not true for having a brother. **

**Growing up with at least one girl in the family also makes people more able to cope with their problems, according to the study. **

Daughters tie loved ones closer together and encourage them to communicate their emotions more effectively, the researchers believe.

Prof Tony Cassidy, from the University of Ulster, who carried out the study with researchers from De Montfort University in Leicester, said that having a sister helped to promote good mental health.

He said: “Sisters appear to encourage more open communication and cohesion in families. However, brothers seem to have the alternative effect. Emotional expression is fundamental to good psychological health and having sisters promotes this in families.”

Girls who had sisters also tended to be more independent and keen on achievement, according to the findings.

The effects were stronger among children from broken homes, suggesting that sisters might lean on each other more for support when their parents divorce.

Prof Cassidy added that the lowest scores were among boys who had only brothers.

“It could be that boys have a natural tendency not to talk about things,” he said. “With boys together it is about a conspiracy of silence not to talk. Girls tend to break that down.”

The study questioned 571 young adults, aged between 17 and 25, about the make-up of their families and their emotional well-being.

Only children tended to score in the middle range for happiness and optimism.

Liz Wright, the co-author of the study, said: “With only children we found that they had lots of strong communication outside of the home. It appears that they have as much social support as those with siblings, but it does not come from within the family.”

The findings will be presented today (THU) at the British Psychological Society annual meeting in Brighton.

Re: Having a sister …

**“Sisters spread happiness while brothers breed distress” **was the heading of the article on the BBC.

… i don’t think i agree with the statement… i have one sister and one brother… it’s all down to the theory of conditioning… and fulfilling the given sterotype that boys are emotionally reclusive whilst girls are open in their communication :hmmm:

 Hi maroush

hmm that bolded part makes a lot of sense. Why is this environmental conditioning so strong? :bummer: We boys do want to express a lot of emotions but we are not “supposed to” coz that would’t be manly. :2guns:

:hinna:

Re: Having a sister ............

Well I don't have any sister's but I agree with this article.

I don't think I have really talked to my brother in about 15 years even though we used to live in the same house.

Edit: We don't have hate each other or anything. It's just that there was never any communication between us. My nieces really love me though.

Re: Having a sister ............

This is fact. Girls rule, boys need to stay at school

Re: Having a sister ............

another crap study

Re: Having a sister ............

This study is pure doo-doo.

Re: Having a sister ............

I didn’t read that article but let me tell you ... Having three sisters have made me more tolerant and has really helped me understanding women ‘ mind , spirit and soul.

Having sisters have refrained me engaging in all those silly teen age activities normally guys do ! as it prevents me thinking ill for other women as God forbid , when I do , a thought snaps me mind that same could happen to me own sisters .

Re: Having a sister ............

i know having sister can get you "kachy qeemy ky kabab" ky sandwiches with fresh orange juice. Like almost every day.

Couldn’t agree more mate. :k:

Re: Having a sister ............

:(

Re: Having a sister ............

I think that is more individual. There are guys who have sisters but do all that stuff anyway, and dont ever think of their sisters being in that situation.

I know a few guys who would say this study is garbage.

Re: Having a sister …

Re: Having a sister …

Re: Having a sister ............

I agree with the study, being the only sis of 2 bros I have a personal experience.its more of the sis part to keep things cool b/w brothers fights and all sort of stuff , and even b/w my father and my brothers relationship i am a strong bridge and being eldest i guess was also part of it.

Re: Having a sister ............

I've always wanted a sister :( I've always thought it would be so wonderful to have a little sister to spoil, but I guess I get to do that with my lily bug.

Re: Having a sister ............

Hmm...ppl dont have to agree 100% with the article...but yeah there is some truth. Being the only daughter n only sister of my brothers...have made me understand how and why guys behave in certain ways!. Everyone needs a sum emotional outlet and sumtimes sisters r easiest to reach!. Being a sis i know how i play my role for my brothers and not having a sis have made me realize dat i dont have any outlet for open communication! so yeah i do wish i had a sister!. :(

N all those ppl who doesnt agreee wid the article at all dey need a reality check!!...otherwise guys wud never have been looking for female companions in any form!.

Re: Having a sister ............

If only more guys thought like that and not only thought like that, but implemented it too.

Re: Having a sister …

:jano: i wub my sister

Re: Having a sister …

did not need a study to tell me that…and now i miss her :crying:

nah brothers ain’t all that bad, they just need to be bullied a little more to achieve that ‘communication’ and ‘cohesion’ i wouldn’t exchange mine for another wacky sister!
