Having a prayer room in the house

As married couple, with kids, having a prayer room in the house is important, where somebody will go in and pray. With so many things to do, work, school and home chores, if reasonably long hours are spent in the prayer room by the parents ( separately), is not it worth it for kids to learn to be religious, be able to meditate and know that having a prayer room is important? Any thoughts?

Re: Having a prayer room in the house

There is a hadeeth of Prophet:saw: that precisely tells us: Do not make your home a graveyard.

The rememberance of Allah:swt: in homes is essential to say the least.

With the same token, it is also adviced to pray in congragation and that too in mosque.

Usually you can dedicate a corner of a room for Salah and Tilaawat-e-Quran.

Reading Islamic Books is another thing that must be made a habbit and children must be trained with such values.

Re: Having a prayer room in the house

we actually have a few people who built a “prayer room” when they were building their homes. It has books along with prayer rugs as well. I think it is a good idea if you can spare a room :k:

Re: Having a prayer room in the house

It depends on the person.

I personally get bored easily and therefore I wouldnt want a specific designated area for prayer. I would like to be able to pray all over the house, including outside if I so pleased.

I will like to have a library though, that includes Islamic material. smile

Re: Having a prayer room in the house

i think its a better idea to pray where the children can see u so they can learn too....

i pray in the same room where my son is playing....
he is yet short of 2 years, but he knows how to pray (takbeer, folding hands, rukoo, sajda, sitting in qaada, duaa, tasbeeh) even if its just actions and he might not be doing them in proper sequence, but he is learning....

if i hide in a prayer room and pray alone, i think it will be dificult to teach the child later....

^ Awww lolz thas so cute

I think when the kids are young, it is a good idea to pray in view of them, so they can see n learn. My parents used to openly pray in our living room while we were younger (I remember when I was very young, I would watch my dad pray and when he was doing hte last kneeling down, I’d get on his back and he’d take me around the room.. :hinna: yaadein.. :teary1: ). Uh yeah..later on, when my brother moved out and I moved into his bedroom  they turned my old bedroom into a hujra.

Re: Having a prayer room in the house

this is a new trend that has started especially in Pakistan .. homes are being built with a small room which is called the "prayer room".. i think its more a copy of what hindus have.. a pooja room... they cant carry their gods wherever they pray in the house... so they keep a room for this purpose..

we unlike them.. can pray in any clean space... and ofcourse.. as ppl have said before me... its wise to pray where ure kids can see u...

we were confused when we saw the "prayer room" in the house layout... kher.. we will be using it as a study with wall to wall shelves.. and lots of books greedy khatoon

Re: Having a prayer room in the house

I agree with armughal n khawateen.

I haven't seen any prayer rooms in houses so far...n I know I wouldn't like one.

We pray in our living room usyually but sometimes in bedroom....or hallway too....n so does our son .....!!

Because our kids have observed this all....as soon as me or my hubby come out of washroom after performing wuzoo( she realises it when we come out with our sleeves folded up the elbow, i think)...my 2 years old daughter runs n brings the prayer mat for us. Not to mention standing beside us n copying takbeer n all..:)

Re: Having a prayer room in the house

After all of us siblings got married, my mom turned my sister's bedroom into a prayer area. Basically it is only used as a prayer room when guests come over and pray in jamat because there isn't enough room elsewhere in the house.

Re: Having a prayer room in the house

I think thats an excellent idea i plan on doing it as well. Its very important to have a pecific room where you know its paak saaf. Inshallah i plan on putting Islamic books in the same area. I would honestly like my kids to learn islam to the best of their potential- Inshallah.

Re: Having a prayer room in the house

the idea sounds more like a hindu puja room to me. Muslims are allowed to pray anywhere, and that is how we should keep it.

Re: Having a prayer room in the house

i never liked this thing :)

Re: Having a prayer room in the house

I totally agree with above. I have been told that one should offer prayers in all the clean areas of the house and it brings more blessings than just offering prayers in one dedicated place.

Re: Having a prayer room in the house

I do like the idea. Right now we use our study mostly to offer prayers. But after namaz it do like to sit quitely for a few mintutes without kids playing around and meditate or do my tasbee. It just is very relaxing. So I think a dedicated prayer room would be nice.

Re: Having a prayer room in the house

In my previous house..our gameroom was our prayer area..everyone would go and pray there....it was huge and peaceful wid windows all over..
but now we just pray anywhre..usually in bedrooms or computer room!

Re: Having a prayer room in the house

I don't think you are restricting yourself to the prayer room when you build one. I think it can be used for family prayer time when your kids get old and you want them to pray in jamaat. Also it can be used as a study room where you can sit down quitely and teach the kids how to read Quran.

Re: Having a prayer room in the house

hummm

Re: Having a prayer room in the house

I have always wanted one because my rooms always a disaster and its very distracting to pray there with my phone and all there. I do like the idea of Islamic library/prayer rooms but I do think its more of a hindu thing and thats what keeps me away from it :-/

Re: Having a prayer room in the house

A very good response.

Thanks,

Re: Having a prayer room in the house

It's not a bad idea but I would agree with those who think that there should not be a sepearate room. I heard that the space you use to pray will testify on Yom-ul-Qiyaamah for you, so that's why people change places for Farz, Sunnat and Nafal in a prayer (ever noticed people in the mosque doing that?) By limiting one room, we might limit the space. Besides, it is very important to pray in front of children, regardless of their age, it teaches them the timing, respect, importance and love for prayers. A friend of mine used to say prayer loud, and all three of her kids, MashaAllah, learnt prayers at very early age. Besides they learnt the same Surahs that she recites in the prayer. Those children are 6, 8 and 9 I guess, and they all recite Surah Waqea'h, Muzzammil, Fajr etc. in the prayers. It's all because their mother used to read it loud during prayer.
