There has to be a whole load of psychology besides monstrous amount of attraction for someone to cross this limit. I remember my cousin (male) saying that guys can always tell a girl in an unhappy relationship, and I guess being a tower of strength and source of laughter for pretty maiden can be a turn on for some guys. There is probably some sort of adventure and heroism in all that.
