Well those were the days of celebrations of Ganesh chathurthi,Meerut every year used to erupt in communal roits between hindus and muslims(meerut being most communal sensitive town in uttar pradesh) on the petty issues of using loudspeakers on friday prayers by hindus and muslims.Merrut city being most sensitive as it was it integrated socitey of hindu and muslim mohallas right from the times of qutub-u-din-ebak rule.So Ganesh Chaturthi used to be low key affair with army deployed in lal kurti and at begum pull as it is also be used to be month of Ramdan.I suppose 1988 riots were the worst roits in merrut history.My vice-principal in kendriya vidyalaya sikh lines, Zaidi madam's ( who is the younger sister of Mohsina kidwai,social welfare minister in indira gandhi and rajiv gandhi cabinet) 7 sons were captured and brutally tortured to death in roits during ganesha chathurthi roits.only Mohsina kidwai(who was in delhi) and zaidi madam( who were with us in scouts and guide camp at Haridwar)survived.

But in 1989 we got transferred to Tirupati(Andhra Pradesh) then only we actually got to know all the fanfare attached with ganesha chathurthi.:)

I ve to differ with u on this.Meerut is famous for it 1857 revolt when platoon of east india company(called lal kurti) revolted and marched to delhi and declared bahadur shah zafar as the king of india.

And regarding doing work let me remind u if u ve prepared fo IIT or UPSC entrance exam then u must be knowing that 70% of those books were published from meerut and the IIT book for maths was written by ML khanna who was maths prof at meerut university(now chowdhary charan singh university).These books were famous all over india as far as madras(chennai).Brillian tutorials famous IIT coaching center used to recommend these books.way back in 1990s.and then again they were recommended by Agarwal institue of bombay.

now on small scale industry front meerut is famous for cricket bats ,leather goods woolen clothes export .gazak and revaries (sweets), scissors, Cricket bats, sports gear.

Meerut is also famous for communal violence (Unfortunately)

Meerut has 3-4 patton tank decorated on its main sqaures.1 at the junction of dogra regiment in topkhaane,2 with sikh regiment in kasaeru kheda.one with punjab regiment.Meerut has Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC).It has 3 kendriya vidyalaya:KV sikh line,KV punjab lines,KV dogara lines.

Ganesh Puja was prevalent in Maharashtra since the ancient times. Indians owe it to the great Indian thinker and freedom fighterLokmanya ( Bal Gangadhar) Tilak for reviving it. He used to unite the people and arouse them against the misdeeds of foreign rule. Its popularity has only grown in recent times. The annual ceremony at Chowpatty ( Mumbai ka beach ) gets lacs of people wanting to have a dekho at the Elephant God being immersed into the Arabian Sea.

Lord Ganesh is worshipped in different forms in India and abroad. At Jabbalpore the Lord appears in a female form. At Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh he appears as playing a flute.

Lord Ganesh is worshipped as Mahabini in Borneo, Totkar in Mongolia, Tchoprak in Tibet, Brahganesh in Cambodia, Kwanshidiyik in China, Vinayaksha in Japan. Vaishnavites call him Vishwak Sena. There is a rock cut temple in King-Hsein in China for him. With five faces he is worshipped in Nepal. In a Yogic pose of meditation he attracts the people of Java. He can truly be said to be India’s international God.

With some many Americans visiting India and Indians in IT you will find many Ganesh idols and pictures in many American offices/cubilces.

arrey yaar merrut is very dirty and crowded.it has one of the highest crime rate in india.
Secondly, there is plenty of communal tension over there.
Apna bhopal mast hain ..
