there is no such count even u r allowed to make ur own god and add to numbers.

Re: Happy Diwali to all Gupshup folks

the holy scriptures in Hinduism don't encourage idol worship or worshiping thousands of gods and in actuality those gods all are avatars of the one true God. So in actual Hinduism there is only one God that is worshiped.

Happy Diwali

As per Vedanta philosophy there is only one Supreme Being.

After a visit to India, Mark Twain wrote: "India has two million gods, and worships them all. In religion all other countries are paupers; India is the only millionaire."

Many Hindus regard their gods and goddesses as manifestations of the Supreme God, Brahman. In the Vedantic schools of Hinduism, Brahman is the name given to the concept of the unchanging, infinite, immanent and transcendent reality that is the Divine Ground of all Being. This Supreme Cosmic Spirit is regarded to be eternal, genderless, omnipotent, and omniscient. It can be described as infinite Truth, infinite Consciousness and infinite Bliss. There is a remarkable similarity between this set of attributes and those ascribed by Christians, Muslims and Jews to the one God of classical monotheism.

The differences between Hinduism and the western, monotheistic religions are more subtle. Historian Arnold Toynbee once wrote:

There may or may not be only one single absolute truth and only one single ultimate way of salvation. We do not know. But we do know that there are more approaches to truth than one, and more means of salvation than one. ... This is a hard saying for adherents of ... Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, but it is a truism for Hindus. The spirit of mutual good-will, esteem, and veritable love ... is the traditional spirit of the religions of the Indian family. This is one of India’s gifts to the world.

Weekend Edition Saturday, November 10, 2007 · All over India this week, lights are strung up across houses and businesses as Indians celebrate the five-day Diwali festival. The Hindu holiday is often referred to as the Indian Christmas, but the meaning of Diwali is as complex as India itself.

Happy Diwali Deepavali to all good people!

Someone asked about how many Gods there are. The answer depends on a number of things:

  1. What your definition of God is (eg: Supreme Being, Devtas, Super men etc)
  2. What your definition of 'many' is - (eg: is an atom one or many? is zero one etc)
  3. What school of philosophy you follow (Dwaita, Adwaita types)
  4. And finally, why you want to know (for spiritual reason / solace reasons / prayer reasons etc)

Re: Happy Diwali to all Gupshup folks

I know it may not be appropriate in this thread but its realted info I guess. On Diwali night (Friday) a man (a distant friends huband) lost his life while doing fireworks. He lit a huge firework and when it did not explode, he went to check on it and it blew up on his face...splitting his skull. It is such a tragedy and all the communities (hindu sikh muslim) are feeling shattered by this. He leaves a 5 year old daughter behind who was telling us "my daddy is now become a star in the sky... but he is not a silver star but a golden star and I will speak to him every night"

Re: Happy Diwali to all Gupshup folks

thats very sad... may god rest his soul in peace.
every year lots of people lose their life or get injured because of fireworks.. especially kids..
its about time govt control the kind of fireworks being sold. big ones should be banned totally..
