HAPPY****DIWALI*2U****

May this festival of LIGHTS also enlighten those whose minds are closed to anything else other than what they believe in.

I am not 100% certain why Sikh's celebrate Diwali. But I am 100% certain that it has nothing to do with the Hindu festival of lights etc.

I do recall, it has something to do with the time Guru Gobind Singh Ji was released from a Muslim prison, or his sons? Not certain, but I am very positive that it's only a coincidence we have a celebration the same day. In addition, we (sikhs) do not through colours at each other, or traditional things Hindu's do. But it is more mellowed out, most people on this day spend time at the Gurudwara, and just have a feast etc, but just take it as any other day.

Arai

Heh, by the way.

Happy Diwali to everyone who does celebrate it..

Thats not Divali..!!.i tink u gor ur festivals wrong.ANyway i dotn tihnk u have to be a hindu to celebrate divali..or atleast not the part where everyone runs around crazy lighting firewors and having fun. WELL happy divali and..i wish i was in india on this day.

Ah! So an opinianated view on Divali as well. This guy is not sure about cause of celebration. But is ** 100%** sure that it has nothing to do with Hindus.

That is how politics works. Put a thesis first and find arguments that would support it later.

He finds practice of throwing color on Divali and of course, difference is that Sikhs dont do it. He has mixed up practices on different festivals. Essentially has never lived in India. I am amazed how much Canadian Sikhs know about Hinduism and Sikhism that none in India knows.

Happy Diwali to all.

Arai, your knowledge is very limited. Diwali is celebrated by everyone in India. It is a festival of fun, lights and fire crackers. Sikhs celebrate the return of Guru Hargobind Ji from the Gawalier jail which coincided with Diwali day which was already celebrated by Hindus to celebrate the return of Ram Chandar, Lakhshman of Ayodheya after banwaas.
Anyway, Diwali is probably the one festival that is celebrated accros religious, languistic, state, caste boundaries in India although it has more religious singnificance for Brahmins than others. It is like Chritsmas or Easter which almost everyone celebrates in America but has religious singinficance for only a few.

Diwali and Vaisakhi are two festivals that I used to enjoy most and in my view both were a lot of fun from cultural point of view. Now, both are getting more and more religion oriented probably because of the emphasis given to their origin. People are forgetting to have fun for the sake of it.

There is a kahavat in Punjab.

Daal roTi ghar di.
diwali Ambarsar di.

*Ambarsar= Amritsar

happy Divali..to every one…

ChanMahi. That is what I asked. I knew Sikhs had a completely different reason for celebrating Diwali. I have in no way said it's not a celebration but I said for Sikhs it's another reason. Yes, my knowledge isn't complete, because I am an Atheist, and I've mentioned that several times. I am of only Sikh background and I know of Sikhism from unmediated and unbiased perspectives.

As for the person, who referred to me not living in India. Yes, you're right and I find myself lucky in the sense that I rather be born and raised in a Christian country than a Hindu country, and rather not be influenced by Hindu people and like Rani, think that I am Hindu, when I'm clearly of Sikh background.

Yes, as a matter of fact, I consider myself lucky. Maybe, misinformed on certain irrelevant things that are to Sikhism, but when it comes down to Hindu's and their reasons for celebratiosn on anything. I simply do not care.

My question simply asked what do Sikhs celebrate it for. No doubt that we CELEBRATE something on that day, but it's not for the same reason.

You started a thread comparing Hinduism and Sikhism. So we thought that u think urself to be well informed on both of them. Now u say that u dont care. Well...

"Yes, my knowledge isn't complete, because I am an Atheist.."

arai,
Well for an atheist, you sure have a lot of communal feelings in you, what with all the talk about "Hindu country" and "Christian country" -- haven't heard such terms from an Indian in a long time.

PS: Sorry if I offended you by calling you an Indian.

Washington: For the first time in the history of the United States, a serving president has issued an official White House statement conveying Diwali greetings to the Indian American community and the people of India.

President Bill Clinton Wednesday sent out “warm greetings to Indian Americans across our country as you observe the festival of Diwali.” He said, “This ancient and joyous holiday, with origins in the Hindu faith, reflects both the unity and the rich diversity of the people and culture of India.”

“It is truly a ‘festival of lights,’ marked by lighting candles and lamps, setting off firecrackers and dressing in vibrant colors,” Clinton noted. He said “during Diwali, Indians of all ages and backgrounds come together to celebrate life, the triumph of good over evil and the hope for happiness and prosperity that we all share.”

Clinton said that “America has become home to men and women from countries across the globe, whose skills and perspective have enriched our culture, enhanced our economy, and broadened our vision of the world.”

“Diwali presents all of us,” he said, “with an opportunity to reflect on the many ways the talents, history and traditions of the Indian people have contributed to our national life and cultural heritage and to give thanks for the extraordinary diversity that is one of our nation’s greatest strengths.” “Hillary and I extend best wishes to all for a wonderful celebration,” Clinton added.

At the September fundraiser Clinton had assured the Indian American community that he would explore how Diwali could be celebrated this year in the White House.
