Re: Hamzaad , the 2nd you,
I would like to revive this thread…
Qareen means companion, and in fact, can be called “Jinnati” جِنَّةِ for the general use of the word, or Jaann جَآنَّ in terms of a pair (just like Insaan is a pair Man+Woman). Please look at the sequences and the way they are used in the Quran in relation to INS.
Where INSI اِنْسِ is used, JINNI جِنِّ is used
Where INSAAN اِنْسَانَ is used, JAAN جَآنَّ is used
Where an-NAAS اَلنَّاسِ is used, al-Jinnati اَلجِنَّةِ is used
Now let’s first look at armughal’s quoted translation of the verse 43:36:
If anyone withdraws himself from remembrance of (Allah) Most Gracious We appoint for him an evil one to be an intimate companion to him.
Please show me how he translated Saitaan as “An Evil One”?
Shaitaan comes from ShaTaNa which means “it/he distanced/lengthened/detached/burned/rebelled-in-pride/turned-in-opposition”
Descriptive isn’t it…
A classical Arabic use os the term:
اِنَّه‘ لَيَنْزَوْ بَيْنَ شَطَنَيْنِ
Verily, it (horse) leaps between two long ropes.
Or
رَكِبَه‘ شَيْطَانَه‘
His anger got the better of him
Or
نَزَعَ شَيْطَانَه‘
He plunched out his pride
So how do we translate this verse?
If anyone withdraws himself from remembrance of (Allah) Most Gracious We appoint for him ALL THAT IS DISTANT FROM GOODNESS to be a CONSTANT COMPANION to him.
So there is no being tethered to you… it’s your own psyche.
Second point, the way I described the pairs. INS or A-Na-Sa means “He became sociable/friendly/conversable/without-aversion” … this again is describing social behaviour … and Jinn has everything to do with staying hidden, or averting, or concealment … so these are behavioural pairs in themselves and can be used for the same species. Nomads and Shamans for instance can be considered Jinn and are different from the INS or the urbanites.
Another possibility is of type #3 - al-Jinnati and an-Naasi. We can start with deciphering an-Naas. It is strange that sometimes, the following expression was used:
نَاسِ مِنْ بَنِيْ فُلَانٍ
People from the tribe of “so and so”
And yet, the slam dunk of all
نَاسِ مِنْ الجِنِّ
People from the JINN … WHAT???
How would there be such an expression unless jinn was an attribute that differenciated one group from another within the same species?
I have already explained what that attribute is.
So let’s look at one last word, IBLIS. This word comes from BaLaSa meaning “He/it dispaired”… hence IBLIS means “it/he that causes dispair”… sometihng bad or evil causes dispair, such as greed, or pride, or anger.
So is IBLIS Jinn? I think so… we do not see our blinding pride or greed or anger … it is as if “God has put a veil” on one’s heart when he/she is under IBLIS’ influence
So is IBLIS Malikah? I think so… Malaik defined classically mean “those who are given control”… if we are blinded by IBLIS, aren’t we under its control?
So is IBLIS Shaitan? I think so… Isn’t it distant or detatched from reason, intellect and goodness?
And in the end, is Shaitaan your Qareen? NOT ALWAYS… but it is only a CONSTANT COMPANION (Qareen) if you let it be the better of you… by abandoning your God given intellect and reason and goodness, hence becoming detatched/distant (ShaTaNa) with reality and trailing in humanity.
I hope this post proves meaningful for those who are finding it difficult to swallow “hocus pocus”, like me…
