Re: Half and short names
Ok, there is also another side of the story specially in case of women. After having children, they are called Pappu ki maa, guddu ki maa. Decades ago women didn't call names of their husbands and call them munne ke abba. There are two ghisse pitte jokes coming into my mind.
One about a man named 'Makhan'. once someone came to his wife for getting lassi and there was piece of butter (makhan) in lassi. when inquired 'whats in lassi'. she replied sharma'ing ' Munne ke abba teir rahe hain'
Next one is for a guy whose name was Rehmatullah and her wife used to say at the time of salam phering in namaz 'Assalam o alaikum munne ke abba'.

Which words? Munne ke abba?
Same is the situation with Urdu, when spoken by non Urdu speaking communities. Thanks to Angrez daan, even children of Urdu speaking parents now face this problem and we were discussing this in another thread today.

Yaara is something new and can be tried ;).
There was a tradition in some Sindhi families to call children with strange names (including names of vegetables and fruits) mostly in cases where their earlier children died at young age. Due to this, I heard names like Mirch, leemo khan, Basar (piyaz / onion), Laung, etc.
