Is it only common in Desis to make short forms of the names like Hameed (Meeda), Sikandar (Sikku), Imran (Immi), Parveen (Peeno) besides calling people with nick names like Guddu, Pappu, Babloo, Gudia.
You name it and people have a short form of a name be it Abdullah / Abdul Hameed (Abdul) or Gullu / Ghulamoo for the name with prefix Ghulam (Ghulam Mustafa, Ghulam Hussain). Its sometimes irritating..
Well, my twins, Ibrahim & Jibran are lovingly called “Ibby & Jibby”, because when they were born my oldest, Ammar , wasn’t even 2 yrs old, and couldn’t say their names properly..so it just kind of stuck!
My husband is very against nicknames and doesn’t like it when they’re teachers use the nicks…
My family has been settled in the US for 30+ years, and we only have one altered name…my Mamoo whose name is “jawed” became “jay” when he started his business back in 1979…
^that’s while referring to them in blogs, FB, GS etc…when I’m calling out to them I don’t yell “Thing 1 idhar aao!!!” or “Thing 2, zara ek glass paani lao mama ke liye”
Considering the chances of particular names being spoiled by others, parents now tend to name their children with short names which can’t be shortened further such as Dua for girls and Ibaad for boys. But I observed that a girl was named Noor and her relatives then started calling her Noori
So point is most of the time its not the problem with children taking other children’s name as hilighted by KC, but the elders enjoy spoiling other’s name
Lucky you.. but there are many names in Indian culture, which can easily be shortened / spoiled. Interesting are the names like OM, Rama, Sita which can’t be shortened.

Yes lucky indeed, my (twin) brother name is Jitender, every one in school used to call him Jeetu:),though his colleagues call him "Blessee" now seeing this I named my twins, Vidhi and Vidhan, if these names are shortened they both have similar name, I don't mind short names if name is big enough to be shortened, close circles have right to call anything they wish and those name are generally hilarious:D
Yes some names are hilarious when shortened. Rasheed becomes Sheeda (how gora chitta he may be), Qayyum becomes qeema (even he doesn't like qeema). Parveen becomes Peeno, Lajwanti (Laajo), Balwant (Balli). Preeto, Billo are some other famous shortened names.
In Delhi University it can be anything, our friend circle had names like macchar(too slim), Phaavda(Big teeths), Balushahi(surname Balushi), tharki(natural), charsi(smoker), Billa(short heavy built), chopi(chopra) etc, sometimes these name were derived from surname, sometimes god knows what:D
Ninja can tell even better, these marathis shortens names wonderfully, Tendlukar becomes tendlya, etc:D
