Good on you :) better to be safe then sorry right?
And as the Prophet SAW said:
"Anything which intoxicates in a large quantity, is prohibited even in a small quantity."
In Sunan Ibn-I-Majah Volume 3, Book of Intoxicants, Chapter 30 Hadith No. 3392
So according to this hadith, the chocolate chip cookies in question are not haram, because no matter how many of them you will eat, you won't get intoxicated...
its a separate discussion cuz i think (I am pretty sure i read ayats related to this topic) Quran says moo-bolay bhai are not your real brother.
and whether should i throw the cookies away or give already opened box to the needy, is also a separate discussion.
so back to the discussion guys. i am not forcing anyone to eat it.
i thought people would know that first not every alcohol is consumable, second there are many alcohols which are poisonous that they can cause death in short span of time, third there are specific type of alcohols which are forbidden to consume, forth is this ayat which i guess can answer BBC’s concern on medicines “alcohol contains some good and some evil, but the evil is greater than the good (2:219)”
however, we are not perfect and we can never be. but we should always search for what is good and what is bad for our faith. we should always researching the food we are eating. I am sure none of us will drink a bottle of water if we found it that it contains 0.001% blood of mosquito (may be its a malaria mosquito).
this article is beautifully summarizing past and present practices. it is small. so kindly to read it : http://islam.about.com/od/health/f/alcohol.htm
i personally don’t know what alcohol is present in these chocolate chip cookies. even though i wont throw the cookie box, and neither Häagen-Dazs ice cream (since they both contain vanilla extract.) but i will keep researching on this issue.
QUESTION YOUR PRACTICES, BEFORE YOU WILL BE QUESTIONED!
