You simply can not equate the Quran’s distribution and availability in the masses with the hadiths. Shafi himself says that the knowledge of the Sunnah is in the hands of a few. But why would it be in the hands of the few? Did it get lost along the way? Why was it not preserved and made public as the Quran was? So these are all important questions but to me the main issue is the contradiction between the Quran and the hadiths.
