ISLAMABAD:****Commercial activities at the Gwadar deep seaport will start from mid-April as the authorities have acquired possession of 2,231 acres of land from Pakistan Navy and Pakistan Coast Guard for establishing free-trade zones.

“Our target is to make the port fully operational by mid-April and by that time the first commercial ship will dock at the port and a new ship lane will be operational thereafter,” the managing director of the Gwadar Port Authority (GPA), Dostain Khan Jamaldini, told The Express Tribune in an interview.

He said infrastructure development at the port was in final stages while work was in full swing to establish free-trade zones, where a large number of national and international companies have started establishing display and business centres. “We have recently acquired possession of the required land from coast guards and naval authorities for the port,” he said.

Jamaldini said Chinese authorities were almost done with their planning exercise and have shared their master plan with the port authorities.

According to the initial plan, exhibition and expo-centres will be established at the free-trade zones to display national and international products. The companies showcasing their products at these centres would be bound to use the Gwadar port to export their products.

“These free-trade zones will be exempt from customs duty, sales tax and income tax to encourage businessmen and industrialists,” said Jamaldini. He said a large number of national and international companies have evinced interest in establishing their business centres at the free-trade zones.

After the completion of the northern portion of the M-8 by June, shipping containers would not come to Karachi from Gwadar but would directly go to northern parts of the country via Uttal, Khuzdar and Sukkur, he added. “Construction of this route will save 400-kilometre distance as currently shipping containers have to go from Gwadar via Uttal, Karachi, Hyderabad and then to Sukkur.”

He said recently, an agreement was also signed between the GPA and mayor of Chinese city Zhuhai and later on another MoU would be signed between the GPA and Zhuhai port authorities to use each other’s ports for commercial purposes initially for 10 years.

Besides using the ports, Zhuhai port authorities would also train the Gwadar port staff, he said.

Last year, only 2.99 million metric tons of business was undertaken through the Gwadar port as compared to 64.57 million metric tons from Karachi port and 41.44 million metric tons from Port Qasim.

Federal Secretary Planning and Development Hasan Nawaz Tarrar recently said that the government wanted to immediately boost commercial activities at the Gwadar port by utilising the existing infrastructure to exploit the port’s potential.

“Planning is under way to boost commercial activities at the port,” he had said, while giving a briefing to the Senate Defence Committee.

ISLAMABAD: **The Chinese-run Gwadar deep-sea port will commence operation formally from this month, starting with fish exports to Gulf countries, said Gwadar Port Managing Director (MD) Dostain Khan Jamaldini.

“The first commercial ship will dock at the port and a new ship lane will be in operation thereafter,” said the MD. “Our target is to make the port fully operational this year.”

The port authorities acquired possession of 2,231 acres of land at the beginning of the year from Pakistan Navy and Pakistan Coast Guard for establishing free-trade zones.

The ECC also approved a 23-year tax holiday for Gwadar Port in an attempt to make it a commercial hub by attracting investors.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is scheduled to visit Pakistan this month, is also expected to discuss port-related issues and sign a number of agreements in this regard.

Jamaldini further informed that infrastructure development at the port was in final stages, while work was in full swing to establish free-trade zones, where a large number of national and international companies have started setting up business centres.

“After the completion of the northern portion of the M-8, shipping containers will not come to Karachi from Gwadar, but would go directly to the northern parts of the country via Uttal, Khuzdar and Sukkur,” he said. The construction of this route will save 400km distance, since at present, the shipping containers go from Gwadar via Uttal, Karachi, Hyderabad and then to Sukkur.
According to Jamaldini, Chinese authorities were almost done with their planning exercise and had shared their plan with port authorities.

“Exhibition and expo-centres will be established at the free-trade zones to display national and international products. The companies showcasing their products at these centres will be bound to use the port to export their products,” he added.
He also informed that a large number of national and international companies had shown interest in establishing their business centres at the free-trade zones.

“A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the Gwadar Port Authority and the mayor of Chinese city Zhuhai. The two parties will shortly sign another agreement to use each other’s ports for commercial purposes for ten years,” he said. “Besides using the port, Zhuhai port authorities would also train the Gwadar port staff.”

Last year, only 2.99 million tons of business was undertaken through the Gwadar port as compared to 64.57 million tons from Karachi port and 41.44 million tons from Port Qasim.

Re: Gwadar Port to be operational by mid-April

What’s funny is back during the mid 2000’s there was a thread on Gwadar where some Mush cronies were replying to criticism about Gwadar as a failure by saying it was almost about to launch (although the only one shipment it had ever received back then turned out to be a disaster and revealed lack of proper planning). Almost 12-13 years later here we are still waiting for this port to be operational.

Re: Gwadar Port to be operational by mid-April

There’s lot of international politics involved, Iran has been working on chah bahar and then Dubai also doesn’t want the port take off. There an bean uptick in violence in balochistan after the port is inaugurated.

Re: Gwadar Port to be operational by mid-April

UAE won’t like it to be operational, those dumb sheikhs need to be shown the door.
Time to overtake Dubai once China can get it running and booming.

Re: Gwadar Port to be operational by mid-April

How is that going to happen? Do you even have a slight idea on how ports make money?

Yes yes yes…PM Nawaz Sharif will inaugurate the port mid of the month and it will start operating in next few years or so…nandipir anyone?
یہ چوسنی پٹواریوں کو چوستے بھبتی ہے.

Re: Gwadar Port to be operational by mid-April

This is a never ending drama Pakistanis are fooled to watch.

Sane people in pakistan know Chinese authorities along with the relevant corrupt Pakistanis are actually making sure that Gwadar never becomes operational. Everyone’s getting their share to keep it nonoperational so news like these nothing more than a joke.

Re: Gwadar Port to be operational by mid-April

 now this is some serious conspiracy theory. any proof, sady je?

Re: Gwadar Port to be operational by mid-April

By Chinese authorities, I mean the*** relevant Chinese officials authorized*** to make Gwadar operational. Whilst in Pakistan, I was involved in working with some investors in Gwadar and interacted with people who had some inside info. I realised this project which started more than a decade ago (in the year 2000 I believe?) is never going to take off (Without the non corrupt leadership, offcourse). Dont ask me ‘proofs’. Im not CIA or ISI.

Re: Gwadar Port to be operational by mid-April

ahh “insider info” yet again. :smokin:

Re: Gwadar Port to be operational by mid-April

^^ Did it disturb you so much because you were concerned the ‘proof’ of involvement of indians (indians bribing the relevant Chinese and local Pakistani officlas) in Gwadar port might have leaked out?

Re: Gwadar Port to be operational by mid-April

i’m just surprised your(and many many other naive pakistanis’) conspiracy theories blame everyone - india, russia, china, UAE, israel, iran, USA, nato, afghans etc. for the mess in a land that has been kept lawless and uncivilized for ever by pakistan itself. amused, not disturbed. i was hoping for a better storyline though.

Re: Gwadar Port to be operational by mid-April

Listen queer,

There is no denying that all the mess initiates from the lawlessness in the country and corruption of the locals. I keep repeating that in every other post of mine. Why do you miss to read that? The external anti-Pakistan forces exploit those internal weaknesses of our leadership. It all goes together. Not blaming it on the world. You have to be in Pakistan to know what’s going on.

Re: Gwadar Port to be operational by mid-April

sure, pal. and chinese contractors are anti-pakistan forces? just excuses to avoid the truth.

Re: Gwadar Port to be operational by mid-April

^^ Corrupt Chinese and Pakistani relevant authorities are being bribed by the anti Pakistani forces. In my first post, I also mentioned corrupt Pakistani officials along with Chinese officials to run Gawadar port. You conveniently picked the ‘chinese officlas’ part and ignored that I mentioned Pakistani relevant officials too. So, Im blaming corruption as the root cause whether Chinese or Pakistanis. So, if you’re implying Im blaming ‘CHINA’ for the Gwadar problem then you are wrong.
