Gabbar was just a villian in one of Dharmendra's superhits. Dharmendra gave many superhits to Bollywood. If Dharmendra was not there then this World must never have heard of Gabbar. Even Amitabh was suggested by Dharmendra as his costar in Sholay.
Without Dharmendra it is just idiotic to create Sholay. Only Dharmendra had the guts to achieve the impossible.

^ Bhai saab ap ke spelling theek nahi hain “z” and “j” are messed up apun ne theek kar dia hai 
One other thing Dani (the famous vilan) once claimed that he was offered the role of Gabbar singh first but he declined. Don’t know how much is truth, but if dany had done the role it would be an ordinary role and not the mega hit which it turned out.

Just b/c the guy's family gets wiped out by terrorists, there's no comparison at all...SHOLAY is the greatest film of all time, from music to dialogues to acting (the best, btw, was by Amjad Khan)...just saw it again last weekend at Karachi Restaurant in Houston BRILLIANT

How can they replace Thakur?? Sanjeev Kumar was great as thakur. Jaya was great as the brooding widow and the jail scene at the beginning was hilarious! Gosh

Sholay is definitely "The Representative" of Indian cinema. There are so many characters and emotions that can never be replicated. RGV is trying to remake it but this thread suggests that he should not take it seriously. RGV must leave Sholay as it is and start some other project.

some intersting facts about Sholay:
India’s first 70 mm, stereophonic sound film. It premiered at Bombay’s Minerva theatre.
Was about to be removed from cinemas due to low attendance figures but attendance started rising and word of mouth made it the biggest hit of Indian cinema so far with some screens playing the film for several years.
The flamboyant Shatrughan Sinha was initially cast for the role of Jai, but Amitabh Bachchan convinced the producers that he was suitable for the role.
Danny Denzongpa who was initially offered the role of Gabbar Singh was busy shooting in Afghanistan for Dharmatma (1975). He could not accept the role and the reluctant second choice Amjad Khan got it.
Initially, ‘Dharmendra’ was keen to play the role of Thakur Baldev Singh. He eventually relented when the director informed him that Sanjeev Kumar would play Veeru if that happened, and would get the heroine. Sanjeev Kumar had just then proposed marriage to Hema Malini. Dharmendra was in love with her and quickly went back to the role of Veeru.
The famous overhead tank scene where Veeru threatens Mausi with suicide and Jai attempts at making a proposal of marriage was drawn from a real life incident.
Director Manmohan Desai was first approached by the writing duo of ‘Javed Akhtar’ and Salim Khan with the story for this movie . He was busy with Chacha Bhatija (1977) and could not accept the project.
Actor Amjad Khan was almost dropped from the project because scriptwriter ‘Javed Akhtar’ found his voice too weak for Gabbar Singh’s role.
This film was directly inspired by the spaghetti westerns of Sergio Leone. Some critics at the time even began calling it a “curry western”.
Amitabh Bachchan was almost killed at the end of the movie when a stray bullet from ‘Dharmendra’ missed him by inches.
The train robbery sequence took about 20 days to film on the Mumbai-Pune line, near Panvel.
Amjad Khan’s calling one of his associates Sambha (“Arre o Sambha’, tera kya hoga?”) caught the fancy of not just moviegoers, but also producers. So much so that a producer promptly announced a movie titled Sambha.
This was the first film in the history of Indian cinema to celebrate silver jubilee (25 weeks) at over a hundred theatres across India.
** In the original ending, the Thakur killed Gabbar. The Indian Censor Board did not agree with this ending, saying that its vigilante aspect undermined the rule of law and could adversely influence naive young minds. So, a new ending was created that showed the police running in at the last moment, arresting Gabbar, and specifically telling the Thakur that only the law has the right to punish criminals. The original ending was restored in the 204-minute director’s cut. **

There are some movies where everything is just perfect, and this is one of those, from the background score, to the songs to the plot twists to OF COURSE, the acting...each and every actor was simply born to play his/her part. I still have a hard time believing this movie is as amazing as it is, coming in the 70s in India but any single change would have hurt the movie. Great movie, as good as any of the great English movies (only the fight scenes are a little weak but that is true for all movies of that age)...
And I do think the Gabbar's barbarity, laughter and dialogues make this movie what it was, he was a haunting villain

This movie is nothing without the great dialogues. All the credit goes to the two writers, SALEM-JAVED.

How can you ignor Dharmendra? If he was not there, Saleem Javed may never have written this story. The most credit for any movie is definitely goes to the writer/director.
But this story was written for Dharmendra. If he was not there in Bollywood, Javed must not have sorted out any other person who can ever finish Gabbar. Dharmendra was the strongest "Bollywood" man of his age.

the reason sholay was a hit cause everybody was chillled out during production but india wanted more movies quicklly therefore movies have been nothing but poorly written and rushed through and no one has yet told them this. i think sholay got outside help from hollywood.
