Guantanamo Prisoners claim torture and "horrific" treatment by US (MERGED)

A BRITISH captive freed from Guantanamo Bay today tells the world of its full horror - and reveals how prostitutes were taken into the camp to degrade Muslim inmates.

Jamal al-Harith, 37, who arrived home three days ago after two years of confinement, is the first detainee to lift the lid on the US regime in Cuba’s Camp X-Ray and Camp Delta.

The father-of-three, from Manchester, told how he was assaulted with fists, feet and batons after refusing a mystery injection.

Their “cells” were wire cages with concrete floors and open to the elements - giving no privacy or protection from the rats, snakes and scorpions loose around the American base.

He claims punishment beatings were handed out by guards known as the Extreme Reaction Force. They waded into inmates in full riot-gear, raining blows on them.

But Jamal’s most shocking disclosure centred on the use of vice girls to torment the most religiously devout detainees.

Prisoners who had never seen an “unveiled” woman before would be forced to watch as the hookers touched their own naked bodies.

The men would return distraught. One said an American girl had smeared menstrual blood across his face in an act of humiliation.

Jamal said: "I knew of this happening about 10 times. It always seemed to be those who were very young or known to be particularly religious who would be taken away.

Jamal bears the scars of Guantanamo. He stoops into a hunch as he walks because the shackles that bound him were too short.

As a punishment, inmates would be confined so tightly they would be forced to lie in a ball for hours. During lengthy interrogation, they would be tethered to a metal ring on the floor.

Jamal said: "Sometimes you would be chained up on the floor with your hands and feet actually bound together. One of my friends told me he was kept like that for 15 hours once.

"Recreation meant your legs were untied and you walked up and down a strip of gravel

He said one unit used force-feeding to end a hunger strike by 70 per cent of the 600 inmates. The strike started after a guard deliberately kicked a copy of the Koran.

Rice and beans was the usual diet and the water was “filthy”. Jamal added: "In Camp X-Ray it was yellow and in Delta it was black - the colour of Coca-Cola.

They would shut off the water before prayers so we couldn’t wash ourselves according to our religion.

"The food was terrible as well, up to 10 years out-of-date.

I prided myself on never asking them for anything. I would not beg." Jamal said they were told they had no rights. "They actually said that - ‘You have no rights here’.** After a while, we stopped asking for human rights - we wanted animal rights. In Camp X-Ray my cage was right next to a kennel housing an Alsatian dog.

"He had a wooden house with air conditioning and green grass to exercise on. I said to the guards, ‘I want his rights’ and they replied, ‘That dog is member of the US army’.**

"About a year into my time, I had a dream. A voice said, ‘You will here for two years’.

"In my dream I said, ‘Two years! You’re joking’. But when I woke up, I was calmer because at least that meant I would be getting out one day.

“I was sent to Guantanamo on February 11, 2002 and left on March 9, 2004, so I was there for just over two years, just like the voice in the dream said.”

This is very disturbing, Camp X ray is an illegal prison and even so prison is no holiday but one thing no one has been charged with a crime and this behaviour from US officials is taking things way beyond the limit of normal human behaviour even in a prison.

If this is what they did to prisoners from britain what happened to prisoners from pakistan and afghanistan. I am sure we will have more revelations to come out from others.

They should be grateful for being alive. Americans could have easily whacked them and no one would have found out.

Being thankful that the above did NOT happen....doesn't mean the treatment was ok.

I'm bothered by how much time and effort the US went into explaining the detainees got halal food, water for wudu, namaaz time...etc....and if this was the reality. :(

So much for human rights. Its a bit of a cheek on the part of the American government to refer to Saddam as an evil monster and violater of human rights, when they themselves do the same things on a smaller scale. America does not practice what it preaches all it understands is world domination by any means necessary.

I wonder what the defenders of the American government, in particular the muslims who defend America always haev to say about this?

Maybe they will now open thier eyes and and smell the cofee and start taking the side of Islam and the muslims.

Where US is wrong US is wrong. But its not all not black and white, if US is wrong in their actions In Gitmo, it does not mean OBL is righteous all of a sudden.

Us has made many errors, many mistakes and made many wrong decisions through its history, as have many other nations. However it does not mean that it should be vilified at every turn, because look into any country or any group's actions and you can find enough stuff to dislike.

btw, it appeats that the moron extremists just butchered more innocent people, I wonder what the defenders of the extremists, in particular the muslims who defend extremists haev to say about this?

Maybe they will now open thier eyes and and smell the cofee and start taking the side of innocent people and not that of the extremists.

Please don’t believe this.

I’m not going to go through that point by point, but I didn’t see a factual statement in that article. What is shocking is that this was printed and it is a disgrace to journalism.

Some may remember that I am no fan of the Guantanamo prisons, but they are not at all anything near what was described above.

First, on the prostitutes: where is Guantanamo? Once you have that answer try to figure out where prostitute might be found.. plenty of banana rats, no prostitutes in Gitmo.

Old food and being malnourished?? How is it that the average prisoner has gained 13 pounds, then? (source)

What is most likely is that this person who gave the interview gave quite a few interviews at Gitmo (he was a snitch, out on good behavior) and now has to keep the hardass rep or get his ass kicked in the neighborhood.. ‘yeah, I’m bad. Those mofo Yanks tried messing with me, but I messed with them!’ He’s just trash talking. Half that stuff isn’t even plausible.

Spoon,

Thankfully somebody had the good sense to question this guy's motivations. Now let's ask how much this rag of a magazine paid for this interview, and the journalistic credentials of a low class tabloid. Yet people are here sucking it up, as if it were the gospel truth.....

The part that really gets me is how he explains how he got into Aghanistan. As if he took a wrong turn on a Sunday drive and ended up in a different country. Everyone in jail claims they are innocent......

And by the way, I actually believe that female intelligence officers may have interrogated some of the prisoners. Quite a fine psychological technique to have a woman take control of the interview if someone were not culturally accustomed to that.....

Spoon you do bring up some points to ponder as well as look into. One thing i’d have to question is the weight gain… if their activity is limited and they are spending so much time sitting around…they will gain weight even if the food is bad. Further,
Malnourishment can also occur from poor nutritional value of the food they eat.

:)Well! If in the US female intelligence officers interrogate by touching themselves and smearing menstrual blood across a persons face then I want to be interrogated in the US.

I think perhaps this fellow might be exaggerating a wee bit, but I am sure all sorts of sherades and manipulations were done in the process of the interrogations. For example, the control over the packets of sugar, and the skipping of a food item sound like classic manipulation techniques.

Sounds like he swallowed a lot of the manipulations hook line and sinker!

Second freed Guantanamo detainee condemns “horrific” treatment by US govt

Yet another former detainee stating widespread abuse of human rights by the US government at Guantanamo bay. No wonder they were reluctant to let these people go for years?

Guantanamo man condemns treatment

One of the Briton’s freed from Guantanamo Bay has said he received “horrific” treatment while he was detained by the US government. Tarek Dergoul from Bethnal Green, east London, said in a statement he was held in inhuman conditions, interrogated at gunpoint and beaten. The family of the 26-year-old believe his mental health has been “severely affected” by his experiences. The US denies claims of bad treatment at the camp in Cuba. Mr Dergoul, who was arrested two years ago in Afghanistan on suspicion of terrorism, was one of five Britons released by the US on Tuesday. After returning to the UK the former care worker was freed without charge from British police custody on Wednesday.

The statement from Mr Dergoul, which was released through his solicitor Louise Christian, said: "Tarek Dergoul has started to try and give his family and his solicitor Louise Christian an account of the horrific things which happened to him during detention at Bagram, Kandahar and Guantanamo Bay. ***"This has included an account of botched medical treatment, interrogation at gunpoint, beatings and inhuman conditions. "Tarek Dergoul condemns the US and the UK governments for these gross breaches of human rights and demands the immediate release of all the other detainees at Guantanamo Bay. “Tarek finds it very difficult to talk about things and his family believe his mental health has been severely affected by the trauma he has suffered.” *** The statement also said that Mr Dergoul’s family do not anticipate he will be speaking about his experience in the near future because of his “poor health”. A spokesman for US Southern Command in Miami, told BBC News Online: “We do treat the detainees in a fair humane way, according to the Geneva Convention.”

really shocking......

and the same is happening in afghanistan as well.... prostitutes are used like this in kabul....

Wonder why this isnt the top story on CNN? LOL...Muslims dont deserve to exist coz they cant share OR help in each other's pain.

Addendum to this all…

…“they endured three months of solitary confinement in Camp Ddlta’s isolation block last summer after they were wrongly identified by the Americans as having been pictured in a video tape of a meeting in Afghanistan between Osama bin Laden and the leader of the 11 September hijackers Mohamed Atta. Ignoring their protests that they were in Britain at the time, the Americans interrogated them so relentlessly that eventually all three falsely confessed. They were finally saved - at least on this occasion - by MI5, which came up with documentary evidence to show they had not left the UK”

Forced confessions? Sound like something from the USSR rather than what you’d expect from the country that claims to be the leader of the free world.
