Guantanamo Muslim chaplain detained

A Muslim US Army chaplain who worked with al-Qaeda suspects in Guantanamo Bay has been detained, US military officials say.
He has not been charged, but it is believed that he is suspected of espionage.

Captain James Yee has been held since 10 September as part of a military investigation, said a spokesman for Southern Command, which oversees the US base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

A senior law enforcement official told the Associated Press news agency that agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation confiscated classified documents Mr Yee was carrying and questioned him before he was handed over to the military.

The chaplain was arrested as he stepped off a plane at Jacksonville Naval Air Station in the US state of Florida. Officials say the investigation is ongoing.

Mr Yee, a Chinese-American who graduated from West Point military academy, was assigned to the naval base at Guantanamo Bay in November, Southern Command spokesman Captain Thomas Crosson said.

Around 660 al-Qaeda suspects and alleged members of Afghanistan’s former Taleban regime are currently being detained at the Camp Delta military prison in Guantanamo Bay.

Designated “enemy combatants” by the US Government, none have so far been charged with any crime.

No matter how hard the west tries to divide the muslims and recruit muslims to work for them and against Islam in many cases, they can never destroy the Islamic bond which exists between the muslims. Whilst Americans unify on land we the muslims unite based upon belief and we will never abandon our muslim brothers and sisters.

Good thing they caught this traitor before any more harm could be done. He should have never entered the US military or accepted the job at Guantanamo if his loyalties to "Islam" were going to cause him to become a traitor to his country

The americans are clowns they appointed this imam.

Now because he won’t turn his back on muslims they americans accuse him of espionage.

What a complete farce! :konfused:

U.S. Army Muslim chaplain arrested

This is not good news at all. Americans already don’t trust Muslims all that much, and this gives them even more concern. I wonder what this person did.

U.S. Army Muslim chaplain arrested
Official: Captain had classified Guantanamo documents

WASHINGTON (CNN) – A Muslim chaplain in the U.S. Army has been arrested and is being investigated on suspicion of espionage and possibly treason, officials familiar with the case told CNN.

Army Capt. James Yee was taken into custody by U.S. military authorities September 10 at the naval air station in Jacksonville, Florida, while in possession of classified documents “that a chaplain shouldn’t have,” an official told CNN, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

The official said the documents included “diagrams of the cells and the facilities at Guantanamo [Bay, Cuba]” where about 600 al Qaeda and other “enemy combatants” are being held by the military.

Yee also was carrying lists of detainees being held there as well as lists of their interrogators, the source said.

In addition to the classified documents, Yee is “believed to have ties to [radical Muslims in the U.S.] that are now under investigation,” the source said. He said he could not elaborate on the basis for that belief.

Although no charges have been filed, the U.S. military is “investigating whether [Yee] may have [been involved in] espionage or treason,” the official said.

“There are a series of things that would lead a reasonable person to believe that something” was out of line, the official said.

Army officials with the U.S. Southern Command, which controls the Guantanamo facility, told CNN that they could not comment on the status of the investigation but acknowledged that Yee had been taken into custody and said he is a 1990 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

They said he became an air-defense artillery officer and left the Army some time later.

The Southern Command official said Yee then converted to Islam and returned to the Army as a Muslim chaplain and had been assigned to the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay in November 2002.

Yee is one of about a dozen Muslim chaplains in the U.S. military, according to officials.

U.S. government sources contacted by CNN said that after leaving the Army, Yee moved to Syria, where he lived for four years studying Islam and was married, apparently to a Syrian woman.

A State Department document available on the Internet confirms Yee’s time in Syria, saying he “spent four years studying Arabic and Islam in Damascus, Syria.”

In the same document, Yee is quoted as saying, “An act of terrorism, the taking of innocent civilian lives, is prohibited by Islam, and whoever has done this needs to be brought to justice, whether he is Muslim or not.”

According to the AP, Yee is being held at a military brig in Charleston, South Carolina – the same place officials are holding Yaser Esam Hamdi, an American-born Saudi accused of fighting with the Taliban, and Jose Padilla, a former Chicago, Illinois, gang member charged with plotting to detonate a radioactive “dirty bomb.”

Yee has been interrogated by Army and Navy law enforcement officials, and by the FBI.

Justice Department officials contacted by CNN confirmed that they had participated in some of the interrogations but said the lead agencies in the investigation are military.

There are between 4,000 and 10,000 practicing Muslims serving in the U.S. armed forces.

This is not to be taken lightly. Each such case makes the life of every muslim in the military service that much more difficult.

Very true.. but for some reason I think they might handle this one well. As long as they dont let DOJ get their nose into it.

But this brings up a fun question:
Who would you rather loose intel to? al Qaeda or the Chinese?

Salaams to the muslims and Hi to the non-muslims

Seminole

The Prophet Muhammed said " War is deception ", so in times of war muslims are allowed to lie to achieve our objectives and the American led crusade against the muslims has been going on for a number of years, so what this brother did is perfectly acceptable. Also does not America and every other nation employ spies who work within the ranks of their enemies, so why then is it a problem when muslims do this, is it the case of " Do as we say and not as we do". Another example of capitalisms double standards. Muslims do not bond on land we bond on belief so everyone on the face of this earth is welcome to join us, unlike the bond of land, where you have to be born there to be accepted. The many thousands of muslims who serve in the American armed forces will always put Allah before America, and when Allah orders the muslims to help their brothers against the disbelievers the muslims will naturally obey their creator to whom they bow 5 times every day.

Ak47

The Americans like to tell the world that they are invincible but it is Allah who is. This mistake is not the first one which they have and will make they will make many more and the biggest one is rejecting Allah and following secularism and declaring war against Islam and muslims, for this they will pay a heavy price.

Imdad Ali

Brother please read the Quran where Allah talks about belivers and disbelievers, truth and falsehood, enemies of Allah and friends of Allah. Disbelivers will always see us as enemies and a threat as long as we follow Islam and call for Islam, the only way we can make them happy with us is if we apostasize from Islam and follow their way. We should be proud that we are muslim and never feel weak or ashamed because we are part of a noble and honourable ummah one which in the past was the rulers of the world militarily and in terms of culture and civilazation, and inshallah we will be again.

Tom Sawyer

Muslims living in non-muslim lands have a hard time also muslims living in muslim lands where Islam is not implemented have a hard time as well. Muslims belive that Allah is the provider of our sustenence and not the american army so in Allah we put our trust.

HUH??? are you sure it wasnt' Sun Tzu??

"Muslims living in non-muslim lands have a hard time also muslims living in muslim lands where Islam is not implemented have a hard time as well."

To me, it looks like muslims are having a hard time living in muslim lands where Islam is implemented (Pakistan) as well. Does it also state "things are tough all over" in the Koran, or was that a Cheech & Chong movie?

At this point, we don't know much about whats going on, so its futile to discuss on end about muslims being divided and a huge conspiracy theory against muslims. The chaplain is not even charged. The only information is that he had certain documents in his possession, which a chaplain had no business carrying. He is only detained at this point, not even formally arrested.

Do remember, that this chaplain was widely publicized in US media as an epitome of the ideal muslim-American model.

Lets just wait and see how this case turns out to be.

the THE WASHINGTON TIMES put the headline like this…

Chaplain arrested to protect lives,

http://www.washtimes.com/national/20030922-124058-1300r.htm

may be he wanted to help those inside or inform their families…

So basically what you are saying is that there is no country in the world wehre Islam is truly implemented. So logical conclusion is that muslims are facing non-islamic system every where on earth...then why single out America?

idiots in each group have to find a rival/threat/enemy to maintain their power. many idiots of many groups demonstrate this on a daily basis ;)

Spy charge for Guantanamo official

Mr Halabi worked as a translator at the base
A US airman who worked at the detention centre in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, has been charged with espionage and aiding the enemy, the Pentagon has said.
Senior Airman Ahmad al-Halabi, who is in jail at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, was charged after recently serving as an interpreter at the base, said Pentagon spokesman Major Michael Shavers.

He is the second member of the US military at the base to be held on matters of security.

A Muslim US Army chaplain Yousef Yee was detained in Florida on 10 September on his return from Guantanamo Bay.

Mr Yee, formerly known as James Lee, worked as a spiritual adviser to the hundreds of captured al-Qaeda and Taleban suspects at the base.

Unofficial reports said the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had taken classified documents from Mr Yee, as well as a map detailing the location of individual prisoners.

Investigations continue

Officials would not say whether Mr Halabi’s arrest was linked to that of Mr Yee.

Mr Halabi faces more than 30 charges relating to espionage, aiding the enemy, disobeying orders, and making false official statements.

Mr Halabi was arrested on 23 July but news of his detention only emerged this week.

The BBC’s David Bamford, in Washington, said defence officials would not say why they had kept the two arrests quiet, but they said investigations into security breaches at the base were continuing and there could be further arrests.

If all of them are choosing Allah over America, why do they love the American visa stamp on their passport? They should go and be heros in Saudi Arabia. I'll give them my moral support.

showket, leave aside that particular person for a minute...

what if a muslim guy is trying to help convicted criminals? would you and your HT buddies such as ak47 still say jazakallah to that and praise his efforts to promote islamic brotherhood? Just a yes or a no would do, no HT lectures please.
