GTA Photographers and Decorators... Please Advise!

Hi… I know there are already a few threads about photographers and decorators, but they mostly discuss the higher end vendors. No doubt they do great work, but I’m looking for something in much lower price range.

I was wondering if any of you can recommend home based photographers or decorators? I know they are out there but they don’t do the best job advertising!

For a photographer, I want someone with a good eye for angles and light but I don’t mind if he/she is still new to the business. I prefer someone desi since they understand how our weddings work and are less likely to miss the important moments.

For a decorator, I want someone that’s reliable and does good work, but can work with smaller budgets. I want a nice stage and some nice table decor, but it doesn’t have to be too elaborate, and I don’t mind working with someone who does this on the side.

If any of you have recommendations, please let me know!

Re: GTA Photographers and Decorators... Please Advise!

i would think any of the vendors discussed in the decor/photographer threads should be able to work within your budget. you simply have to speak to them about your priorities and what you would like to spend. give them a call or drop them an email and ask!

Re: GTA Photographers and Decorators... Please Advise!

Try yellow barn photography. She's an amateur but does a good job.

LOL I was going to suggest KOS Photography…My brother is one of their photographers and they do great work!

Re: GTA Photographers and Decorators... Please Advise!

Thanks All!

I don't see any wedding photography on KOS' fb page, but I'll give them a call.

Yellow Barn looks good too, the girl Dawn seems like she would be fun and easy going to work with. Any one have experiences with non-desi photographers? I don't mind it, but my fiance is really concerned that they will miss a lot of details as they are unfamiliar with the whole process. Our families are a bit conservative so it's going to be a segregated wedding, and we want to make sure the photographer knows where to be and when to be there without constant guidance.

GTA is the Greater Toronto Area and consists of the areas SGC mentioned.

Re: GTA Photographers and Decorators... Please Advise!

I contacted Dawn from Yellow Barn and she quoted me a pretty high price - I don't remember what it was anymore but I can let you know tomorrow

I think you should be okay with non-desi as long as you tell them before hand the significant moments/rituals. the good ones will ask you to sit down with them before so you can point those things out :)

Re: GTA Photographers and Decorators... Please Advise!

I had Dawn do my wedding and I can honestly say taht she is amazing to work with. She is an engineer by profession and you'd think that what would a geeky asian girl know about covering Pakistani weddings? Well, after our first meeting I knew that she was going to be incredible. She is extremely humble, professional, and dedicated to making the client happy. I was also concerned about how well she'd be able to capture the right moments but she really did her homework. We met more than once and spoke over e-mail so taht she has a better understanding of how our events play-out. She actually took pages and pages of notes, like she was going to writing an exam. Needless to say her hardwork was evident in the final product. My entire family was surprised at how well she managed to a) work with a large group of people and b) accommodated the videographer and c) made it all look like so much fun.

If you have any further questions, don;t hesitate to contact me via pm :-)

What about Laila decor for decoration. I think they're less expensive.

Re: GTA Photographers and Decorators… Please Advise!

I had non-desi photographers. You’d be amazed at how well they capture our weddings and our moments- nothing is “same ol, same ol” for them- its all new and fresh and they approach it with great enthusiasm. I loved my photographers but I’m not sure what budget you are working with- they start at $3500. As well, quite a few non-desi photographers have done desi weddings by now so they have the experience.

Stephen Sager also does desi weddings - he just shot my brother’s wedding last summer and did very well with the posed shots and the couple’s portraits as well as candids and I know he was open to negotiation. http://stephensager.com/blog

I have an appt with Laila on Saturday... I'll let you know how it goes.

I've exchanged messages with Nisha Chandra, Diya Decor, and Jyoti Decor also, but haven't been able to connect with them yet.

Right, so please don't advertise. Thanks!

Re: GTA Photographers and Decorators... Please Advise!

Just an update.

I met with Laila last wknd and I wasn't too impressed. She can decorate just fine, but her work was lacking a certain finesse and elegance. At least in the pictures. Even the centerpieces, the flowers almost looked a little sad. Very sweet lady though...

I also met with Midu from Diya Decor. I was pleased with her office space, pics, and service. She's willing to work with my ideas and create something for me. She's still coming back to me with a proposal though.

I've exchanged some emails with Nisha. She said her projects start at 5k! That's way up there for me, but I told her what I wanted and the budget I was working with... yet to see her reply.
