Hi folks i was just reading an article on Presiddent Obama supporting the right of the local muslims to have a mosque/religious centre near ground zero. Now, I am not sure how I feel about this. As a Muslim I’m thinking we have the right to practice our religion freely and besides the mosque is on private property so no one business . But there is another thought etching in my mind. I don’t know why butifeel empathetic, a little bit uncomfortable knowing the mosque will be built 400yards from ground zero. If I am truly honest and think like a non biased person, my gut reaction is, the mosque although has every right to be there, it’s insensitive to what happened. I can understand the opposition to the mosque.. Would we, the Muslim people be as accepting if the roles were reversed, I fear not. Just wondering what you guys thoughts are on this.
Re: Ground Zero Mosque, NY
The US constitution is paramount as an American knows, you don't [edit by lusi] with the constitution.
Re: Ground Zero Mosque, NY
It is a very simple issue complicated by the media. If the mosque is built it will offend some Americans because they see Muslims as a terrorists. If it does not go a head it again confirms the assumptions that Muslims are terrorists and must be contained.
I do ask myself why does the bulding have to be 13 storey high? is that true?
Re: Ground Zero Mosque, NY
Because it shall be a community center. Not a Mosque. It will simply have two floors where one can pray.

Hello rosies. If you are as non-biased as you say you are, then why do you think mosque has anything to do with the acts of some terrorists?

If they see Muslims as terrorists then why are they allowing Muslims to roam freely in the country? Why don't they apprehend and punish everyone of those "terrorists"?

the mosque has nohing to do with terrorists - i never said that if you read my post - i am simply saying , the concept of building a mosque so close to ground zero is insensitive in my opinion. the mosque is symbolic! there are many mosque in america. thats not the issue its rather a case of where it is being built and what that site means for so many americans...I can see why the americans are pissed off. i would be too - its like the babri masjid in india - which was viciously torn down by hindu extremists - and then there was proposed plans to build a temple on that site. that just felt wrong! as does this.

KHOJI - i think that is an uneducated response to the issue in hand. The constitution of America allows freedom of religion which is whythe US President has vocally given support to the mosque being built on private property. The issue is whether the mosque/cultural centre would be insensitive to the memory of what happened on ground zero 9yrs back. there are many mosques in NYC and across the USA - no objections to that. People however are not ready to build a mosque on or so near to ground zero just yet - and frankly speaking, as a muslim, i dont blame them.
Just thiunk, in saudi - non muslims cant even enter makkah let alone build a church or temple. And the world has thus far accepted that. They are sensitive to what those sites represent to us as muslims. Do we not owe the same courtesy!
Re: Ground Zero Mosque, NY
rosies saudi arabia and america are 2 completely different countries. One claims to have freedom and the other claims to be islamic, They both liars.
Re: Ground Zero Mosque, NY
Rosies, as an American I do believe you uphold the standards of the US constitution and the basic foundations the founding father built the country on. Those principles are more in need today than they ever were. President Bush said that when the Twin Towers were attack it was an attack on our liberties, our freedoms and our war of life.
The day these liberties and freedoms are curtailed for one segment of the population is the day the terrorists prove their claim that Muslims in the US of A are not equal, they are treated as a sub-human species. Protests like those against Park 51 will only serve to send more Muslims to support the terrorists.

Re: Ground Zero Mosque, NY
pakistan was founded on secular principles right? since jinnah was a secularist muslim
would pakistani muslims defend freedom of religion stuff in the pakistani constitution if christians of pakistan wanted to build a big 13 floor church 400feet away from where the lal masjid massacre happened?
would they fight for it like how nonmuslim americans are defending freedom of religion in america regarding the issue of the ground zero mosque, and yes it is a mosque cum community center if there are prayers held for muslims on two floors
Re: Ground Zero Mosque, NY
This is called arguing for no basis. Why try to lump sum issues?
It appears you could not ‘swallow’ the video above and wanted to ‘bury’ it in another useless discussion.
Moreover you have no idea what you are talking about. Too many things in your post in different directions.
Good post Kaka!
Re: Ground Zero Mosque, NY
i do hope it gets built just to show that american ideals of religious tolerance and freedom stood strong against extremists and all the political commotion but i'm just scared that more controversy will be created since it has gotten out of hand
Re: Ground Zero Mosque, NY
you could just respond to what i said rather than dodge it.
i didn’t watch the video so my post has nothing to do with whatever video was posted it was for CM that keeps saying the same stuff over and over again about the constitution

Re: Ground Zero Mosque, NY
yes it is election season, it just seemed so unusual for a place as diverse as NYC, all this controversy getting out of hand like this, bloomberg said it right. it just didn't seem like the united states for a while there with the stabbing and the commotion
