Green Town Police to remove Quranic verses from Ahmadis’ shops
** Community leader says police warned Ahmadis on complaint of business rivals

  • Local Ahmadi says police did not act on his complaint of stones thrown at his house
  • SHO says verses to be removed in next couple of days

By Rana Tanveer*

LAHORE: The Green Town Police is set to launch an operation to remove verses of the holy Quran from more than 20 shops of the Ahmadiya community on College Road, Township, on the complaint of local traders, sources told Daily Times.

The community owns shops of electronics, hardware and home appliances on the road as well as over 200 houses in C-Block of nearby Township. Some of the people have written verses from the Quran (like the kalima) on the front of their shops and houses.

According to local Ahmadiya residents, the traders of the locality were seeking action against them over business rivalries. They said they had written the verses to receive God’s blessings. They said the verses had been written on their houses and shops for many years, and some extremists were now seeking action against them for their own gains.

Members of the Ahmadiya community claimed that their opponents had distributed pamphlets on many occasions, urging the locals to boycott the community, not talk to them, shake hands with them, or shop at their stores.

Waseem Amjad Mahmood, a community leader, said on the complaint of the owners of a local shop Al-Makkah Electronics, the Green Town Police had warned the community to remove all Islamic writing from their houses and shops, or the police would do it.

Sayyed Farrukh Hafeez, another member of the community, told Daily Times that the police had told him to remove a plaque from his front door, which carried a Quranic verse. He said he had removed the plaque. He said local shopkeepers often passed derogatory remarks against the Ahmadiya community.

Hafeez claimed some young men had made videos of the Ahmadiya houses on some occasions. He said some Taliban elements might be behind this.

Abdul Qayyum Mughal, another member of the community, said he had also filed an application with the Green Town Police, seeking action against some locals for hurling stones at his house, which had broken some windowpanes. He said the police did not take any action.

Green Town Police Station House Officer (SHO) Inspector Ghulam Abbas told Daily Times that after receiving an application against the Ahmadiya community, he had called them to the police station, and had told them to remove the verses of the holy Quran. He said he would make the community remove the verses from their shops in the next couple of days.

Tauseef, the proprietor of Al-Makkah Electronics, told Daily Times that the application against the Ahmadiya community had been moved from the platform of the International Majlis Khatam-e-Nabuwat. He denied that bricks were thrown at the houses of the community. He said there were laws against the community.

Human Rights activist Hina Jillani said no one had the right to impose his will on anyone else. She said there were some restrictions on the Ahmadiya community by law, but no one had the right to harass others.

Jamia Naeemia patron Dr Raghib Naeemi told Daily Times that the Ahmadiya community could not do the things barred to them by the Prohibition of Qadianiat Ordinance, 1984. According to Section 298-B of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), the community cannot call its places of worship a ‘masjid’ and cannot give the call to prayer (azan). According to Section 298-C of the PPC, they cannot pose themselves as Muslims, directly or indirectly.

There is no ending to this story. They started from Faislabad now Lahore. Where next?

If I were an Ahmadi in Pakistan, I would say, "Who would want to be a Muslim, if that is the definition?"

better asks the GOD`s of Islamiya Jahmiriya Pakistan LOL

Re: Green Town Police to remove Quranic verses from Ahmadis’ shops

Don't the law enforcement agencies have more pressing issues to work on, like law enforcement for example? Catching criminals? Stopping terrorism and seeking out RAW operatives?

When a body disregards its first duty, it is rendered useless. Their superiors need to be questioned, and they should be reminded of their priorities.

Re: Green Town Police to remove Quranic verses from Ahmadis’ shops

There is no any LAW in Pakistan in all aspects

Why does this bigoted law still exist a quarter century later? Where is the movement to repeal it?

Re: Green Town Police to remove Quranic verses from Ahmadis’ shops

^^ Well you should understand that when Ahmadies were declared non Muslims then Bhutto said I have resolved 100 year old problem and by looking at how much hatred is filled in public by so called religious leaders that if anyone even say that this law should be appealed then they say its part of the consitution..infact they dont even want to listen....hence the best hope for Ahmadies is wait help from Allah.

Re: Green Town Police to remove Quranic verses from Ahmadis’ shops

Jahaaliyat.

Same country where they pour trash ONTO roads, and people walk around with disgusting body odor even though they can afford that deoderant.

Second part of your sentence is plain and simple absurd. Also, there are sadly many other nations or countries around the world where trash is thrown ONTO the roads.

Re: Green Town Police to remove Quranic verses from Ahmadis’ shops

Coming to the topic, it is a very complex situation.

Ahmadis should be respected no doubt about it, weather one agrees with them or not.

Also general public need to control their emotions and attacks on them or on any sect is a terrible, dispicble phenomenon. It is very possible that those who have bad intention to make a news out of their acts, even outsiders, may be involved in sectarian riots.

However, there is a law which Ahmadis cannot do anything about. Majority people have their mind set on considering them non-muslims.

Each country has laws which one or more groups of people living in that country do not agree with. Nothing surprising.

Many places are against hippies and the treatment of these hippies is not good in those countries for example. Hippies don't even get decent jobs in many places. I am not saying Ahmadis are like hippies by any stretch though. Just an example.

Multiple marriage is allowed in islam or even in some sects of christianity but there are places/countries where law exists against multiple marriages. Hope one sees the point.

Yet Pakistanis always cry about persecution at the hands of the “kuffar”

Constitutions can always be amended so that excuse is invalid. The best hope for Ahmadies today is the US, Canada, UK, etc. We have a substantial number of them in the US and Canada. One of my best childhood friends is Ahmadiya (whose parents are Pakistani immigrants, like mine). The US should encourage more of them to come here. We can save them from persecution and Ahmaidyas are pro-American because they appreciate what the US saved them from. Most Sunnis in America are hostile to the US--although none of them ever move back to Pakistan or their hero Saudi Arabia...

We have a group like Ahmadis in America. The Nation of Islam is like them as well but since Islam is a minority religon (0.5-2% of the US) the better comparison is Mormons, a Christian sect. Mormonism is, like Ahmadiyism, a new indigenous sect that differs with mainline Christian sects on some key theological matters. They were persecuted in the past but things have changed. While many Christians view them as heretics, no one is calling on them to be persecuted or killed today. In fact, a Mormon nearly won the Republican nomination for president last year and is considered the front-runner for the Republican nomination in 2012. This is the model Muslims can follow. You do not have to accept the theology if Ahmadiyas but treat them equally as individuals. The larger question is the attitude toward non-Muslims in Pakistan. If there were not widespread bigotry toward religious minorities there would be no significance to classifying them as non-Muslims.

You can't compare religious discrimination to that. How many hippies even exist these days?

Even while tripping over themselves to run to "kuffar" countries. If you or I showed up in Lahore and Karachi, walked up to some middle aged people and told them we are from America and looking for rishtas 90% of them would be kissing our feet hoping to send their daughter to America!
