He should pay for his crimes first before becoming PM for another term.

Re: Green Signal for Nawaz Sharif’s return on Sunday (merged)

I have no regard for NS but the question is why does the Govt. need 6000 security guys to control an unpopular leader. After all we are told time and again that people did not come out on to the streets because of their overwhelming love for Mush. maybe the 6000 security guards and their brutal treatment of ordinary people has something to do with it.

Pakistan’s ex-premier Sharif bound for home and a raucous welcome](http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5j54Zs2VL3ZF6VQx7nG5Xt642F5kw)

LAHORE, Pakistan (AFP) — Pakistan’s ex-premier Nawaz Sharif headed for home Sunday on a plane lent by a king, aiming to end seven years of exile as he returns to a country in turmoil under emergency rule.
Accompanied by relatives and close aides, he was scheduled to land in his bastion of Lahore at 6:25pm (1325 GMT) where thousands of jubilant supporters planned a homecoming party
The aircraft, provided by Saudi King Abdullah who has also gifted Sharif an armour-plated Mercedes, took off from the holy city of Medina.
“Lahore will accord a rousing welcome to Nawaz Sharif, mark my words,” his nephew Hamza told Dawn television outside the airport.
Sharif is flying home with the apparent approval of military ruler Pervez Musharraf’s government, after a first attempt in September ended in his swift deportation just hours later.
It was Musharraf who ousted Sharif in a bloodless coup in 1999, banishing him to Saudi Arabia a year later.
The return of such a strident foe will pile further pressure on Musharraf, who has been condemned by the international community for refusing to lift the state of emergency he imposed three weeks ago.
Security was tight, with more than 6,000 police deployed at the airport and along the route into the city, manning barbed wire barricades and restricting access.
About 100 Sharif supporters broke through the security cordon and reached the glass doors leading to the arrivals hall. Police tried to push them back.
The crowd, some wearing party flags over their clothes, chanted “Long Live Nawaz Sharif” as police tried to stop them.
A further 1,500 supporters massed in the car park outside.
Workers festooned the streets with banners, posters and portraits. Crowds lined the route from the airport to the city. Loudspeakers on cars boomed out music and youths waved victory signs as they blared horns.
“The lion is returning,” said a supporter, Yasin Butt, “and when the lion roars, dictators and political turncoats disappear.”
Party officials complained hundreds of workers had been arrested. A police official admitted arresting “potential trouble-makers” to stop any “untoward situation” arising.
Last month bombers targeted the homecoming parade of another exiled former premier, Benazir Bhutto, killing 139 people and wounding hundreds.
Sharif’s motorcade was to travel through Lahore’s congested centre before stopping for a homage at a shrine to the city’s guardian saint.
His return follows what a government official said was an “understanding,” although that was denied by a senior Sharif party leader.
Musharraf has until December 1 to swear himself in as a civilian president for another five years after a compliant Supreme Court – stripped of most of its previous judges – confirmed his victory in a poll last month.
For that he must first step down as head of the army, which former deputy information minister Tariq Azim said is likely to be on Tuesday or Wednesday, allowing him to take office a day later.
Azim, who is close to Musharraf’s circle, predicted the emergency would be lifted before general elections set for January 8.
Sharif’s return will likely energise an opposition that is split over its role, with many arguing that contesting the vote would legitimise Musharraf’s tactics.
Bhutto, whose party is Pakistan’s largest opposition group, is thought to favour joining the election, but her credibility has been hit by having held power-sharing talks with Musharraf before her return.
She has been in touch with Sharif about drawing up an agreed strategy and their decision is crucial as to whether any boycott will work.
Bhutto filed her nomination papers in her port city stronghold of Karachi, ahead of Monday’s deadline to register as a candidate for the January elections. “We should not leave the field empty,” she told reporters.
She welcomed Sharif’s imminent return, saying it would accelerate the push for political change.

He just landed...
what has changed suddenly?
What exactly brought him back all of a sudden?
Realistically speaking, not PMLN versions like an angel did it, or King Abdullah threatened Musharraf or Musharraf sought forgiveness of his benefactor who btw was also almost his murderer.

Re: Green Signal for Nawaz Sharif's return on Sunday (merged)

Musharraf is probably trying to get him into contesting elections or trying disprove that elections are farce.

Re: Green Signal for Nawaz Sharif's return on Sunday (merged)

Musharraf need Nawaz Sharif to contest the election to fragment any opposition votes. It's unlikely that the PML-Q will lose wholesale votes to the PML-N as long as they retain feudal and middle class loyalty.

An election with more popular parties and politicans involved will force a coalition government, which will weaken the PM's power but also serve as a check on his power.

Given the history of abuse by dominant political parties in power in Pakistan before - perhaps weak coalitions are exactly what we need to rule us.

Re: Green Signal for Nawaz Sharif's return on Sunday (merged)

PML Q has no votes whatsoever in urban middle class of Punjab, they rely on rural Punajb's influential people and biraadri system to get votes.

You might have heard of a saying in Urdu/Hindi:
hathi ke daant dikhanay ke aur, khanay ke aur

(Elephants teeth for display are separate from ones used for chewing).

These 2 promises might be the one on public display :)

**Nawaz Sharif returns home to a huge welcome **

Nirupama Subramanian

*“I am back not for office but to save the country” *

LAHORE: The former Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, returned to Pakistan on Sunday to a** tumultuous welcome** that literally swept him off his feet, seven years after he quietly boarded a plane to exile in Saudi Arabia, and less than three months after he attempted to come back.

In the midst of his chaotic reception, so different from the one on September 10 (he was deported to Saudi Arabia just four hours after he arrived), Mr. Sharif told supporters that he was back not for office, but to save the country.

The Allama International Airport here was teeming with Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) party activists who caused several mini-stampedes as Mr. Sharif and his brother Shabaz emerged from the terminal at about 7 p.m., after their arrival from Medina on a special plane arranged by King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia.

In no time, the brothers were being carried by supporters on their shoulders to shouts of “Long live, Nawaz Sharif,” “Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif” and “The lion has returned.”

Mr. Sharif’s wife Kulsoom was also on the flight but did not come out with him.

At one point, the PML (N) leader, dressed in his usual white salwar-shirt and a black waistcoat, got on to a platform in the airport foyer to address the gathering.
“I have not returned for the sake of personal greed or office. I have come back for the good of the people, to save this country. I have come back to fulfil the responsibility that the people of this country have entrusted to me,” he said. He looked happy if somewhat overwhelmed by the riotous welcome.

The police had tried to stop supporters from reaching the airport. Section 144 was also clamped throughout Punjab province. But more than a thousand party workers managed to break through the barricades and poured into the waiting area of the airport, where the hundreds of waiting policemen had no choice but to stand back and let them go.

Mr. Sharif and his brother left the airport in a white Land Cruiser. An S-class black armoured Mercedes, flown in to Lahore last night as a gift to Mr. Sharif from King Abdullah, stood by, but** Mr. Sharif did not use it. **

Mr. Sharif was to visit Data Ganj Baksh, but at the pace the convoy was moving, it could take him several hours to reach the shrine, located in the old city of Lahore, near Bhati Gate…

Re: Green Signal for Nawaz Sharif's return on Sunday (merged)

I think BB and NS should face a free judiciary first to clarify themselves from corruption and misrule charges....then they should be elected first by their own political parties through a transparent system before they are allowed to take part in politics... it is ethically very important if we want to establish a clean political scenario in this country....until then they should give leadership in their political parties to new people...

Actually they are being allowed to take part in politics as army needs them today to maintain a status quo....as they are afraid of new leadership emerging who are challenging the illegal activities of army rule>>>

Re: Green Signal for Nawaz Sharif's return on Sunday (merged)

NS is not bhatta khor ...khal chor and mobile khor as MQM is...:)

Re: Green Signal for Nawaz Sharif's return on Sunday (merged)

I think NS should face the courts first to prove he is not bhatta khor and khal chor or has not done any corruption or misrule, if he so ethical before presenting himself for public selection>>>

Otherwise he is just helping establishment to maintain staus quo and helping them supress new leadership emerging in the country....
