Any one of the above. Only towards later half they had decent close in fielders - Solkar Abid Ali Wadekar Venkat Gavaskar. But keeping was top class - Engineer Kirmani. And outfield got Ok only towards end - Madan Lal, Ghavri. They themselves were poor fielders and extremely poor batsmen. So that didn't help.

If they had bowled for teams with superior Fielding at the time - Australia windies England they would have been far more successful.

Close tie b/w warne and murli
Saqlain had a short career and might have risen up to the ranks of the greats if had played more
Qadir was just a "good" spinner and didn't have that extra something that would lable him as a GREAT
Murli and warne were consistent dependable and predictable match winners

I think Shane Warne is the greatest Spinner of this era.......

If only Saqlain would have played more he would have been up there with Murali

politely disagree (ask Benaud, Botham and Viv)

imo Qadir was a better test bowler than Saqlain
Saqlain a better ODI bowler

Overall it has to be one of the two Warne or Murali

Anyway in 72-73 England visit Bedi used to literally play with English openers Barry wood ( best technique vs pace) and Dennis amiss. One day he gave amiss practice for few hour. of course amiss destroyed him in 74 tour of England.

suprisingly none of the great windies fast bowlers of the 70's and 80's (Holding, Roberts, Garner and Marshall) in Benaud's consideration list. I would have picked Malcolm Marshall ahead of everyone. There is an obvious Australian bias there

Yes. At one time he was the leading wicket taker in Tests. Then Lillee eclipsed his record. He had great support from other howlers. Hence my earlier comments re Prasanna Chandra and Bedims. I think they were of better class.

u mean Lilly Thompson? he was a fast bowler. wasn't he? i mentioned Gibbs as the greatest spinner. right? was he the greatest?

I meant Dennis Lillee the fast aussie bowler. Gibbs was off spinner. Jeff Thomson was another Aussie fast bowler. Yes Lance Gibbs was great. IMO our spinners were better.

oh thanx...yeah, Dennis Lillee...vaise, ek aur thaa jo shaayad asthma kii vajah se kaamiyaab nahiiN huaa but he was one of the fastest bowlers in the world at that time and his name was i think Jeff Hogg...

...there is another Hogg guy in Aussie squad...i dunno if he is somehow related to him.
