We can’t possibly follow the Sunnah without our scholars, because they are the inheritors of the teachings from the chains of ulema who go back to the Sahabah and in turn the prophet Muhammad (SAW).

I believe that to be false! If you are facing a problem simply refer to what Prophet Muhammad said or did in that situation and woala! Problem solved as simply as that! If you don’t find the solution in Sunnah (which normally is not possible) then you can go to the next step and find a scholar who can guide you.
