Grandma's recipebook..

One of my friends here recently got a gift from her Aunt .. a hand written recipe book, carefully binded and titled “To the generations of the future” :@: .. It contains about 80 of her most selected recipes… which fall under the categaries of Starters , Sauces, Main Course , Curry , Rice , World Food , Bread, Dessert, Grills, Tea etc etc …

I think its a fabulous idea and a very thoughtful and connecting gift … what do you guys think? and would you make your own collection and gift it to your future generations?

Re: Grandma's recipebook..

I think its a great idea!

Appi collected my Mom's recipes for years and kept them all neatly in a folder. She presented it to me as a wedding gift - and seriously it was the best and most helpful wedding gift I ever received! The recipes are all so amazing and so easy to follow.

Now any new recipes I get I add to it and I would love to pass it down to my nieces or daughters etc.

Re: Grandma’s recipebook..

thats such a good idea :cb: i hope i remember to do it!

Re: Grandma's recipebook..

It's a lovely idea!
I made a recipe book, hand written... before wedding! And now i add things to it. its great to have something like it, bcz it is something u really need after wedding.

Re: Grandma's recipebook..

I have been doing that since 2 years now. Whatever I cook I measure the ingredients properly, number of servings & the time it takes to cook it. I save them in my laptop or whenever I get time I post them on food.com (some of them are private & some are public) My plan is to professionally get them printed one day & then gift them to my daughter or daughter in law if I ever have one.

Reason I started doing this was because when I got married & would ask my mom about recipes she would always be like "Beta andazay day yeh dal lo" Hand full of this, hand full of that & you are done & I would always get confused. So I wanna make something where even if when I am not alive my daughter or daughter in law can make these recipes without getting confused. I even save the tips required for some of the recipes.

that's a really good idea i wish i had something like that when i first got married so i knew what i was doing lol

I want to start my own recipe book as we will be moving away from my rents next month (we live on the same street) so i don't want to be calling mom asking how much of what to put in something as i still need something in front of me in terms of a recipe and can't really remember it

@Bint_e_Naeem i was just wondering if it was possible to see how you went around putting your recipe book together so i can get an idea for my own

Re: Grandma's recipebook..

^ by see you mean a recipe example? Here is one of my recipes`

Aloo Kay Kabab (Potato Kebabs)

By Bint e Naeem
on May 28, 2007
Recipe #230917

This recipe is for people who are more into spicy desi food. U can serve these kababs as appetizers, with Daal Chawal or even make Bun Kababs from them. For people who like their kababs crispier they can roll the kababs in bread crumbs after dippen them in eggs. Also before making every kabab if u put some oil in the palm of yr hands they won't stick & the shape would come out better.

Serves: 15, Yield:35 kababs

Ingredients:

2 kg potatoes (boiled, peeled & grated)
3 teaspoons salt
6 teaspoons red chili powder
8 teaspoons mango powder (amchoor powder)
4 green chilies (chopped)
2 tablespoons mint (chopped)
3 tablespoons coriander (chopped)
1 egg (beaten)
1/2 cup oil (or as desired for frying)

Directions:Prep Time: 20 mins Total Time: 40 mins

1 Put the already boiled & grated potatoes in a big bowl.

2 Add all ingredients except eggs & mix well.

3 Take a small amount of this mixture in the hand and flatten to a disc shape.

4 Dip in beaten eggs & then fry in a pan on medium high heat till they turn golden brown.

5 Serve with ketchup, chutney, raita or as a side dish with anything

The food.com format is what I use to save the recipe in my laptop. If I post the recipe on the website it even gives me nutritional information per serving.

Every time I cook something I keep a notepad with me & write everything down. This is hard work if you really go in depth. If for some reason I am not able to write it down at that time I make sure to note in 48 hours since its still fresh in my memory. Whenever I get a chance I also take pictures. I also keep on updating my recipes every now & then as well.

Hope this helps.

Thanks :)

I'm going to start on mine this week i have a few recipes lying around on paper so i should probably put it all in one place and i like the idea of putting it online and taking pics of the food as i go along

Re: Grandma's recipebook..

Yup. Online is a good back up too. I have so many recipes on my hard drive & I can't even imagine my computer crashing down. Which reminds me I really need to sort the recipes & post them online.

& no problemo :)

Re: Grandma's recipebook..

I get my recipes from the net . Print them , then file them in a three ring binder. If I combine a few recipes I staple them together before filing them in that binder.

Re: Grandma's recipebook..

you knwo whats sad.. NO ONE and I mean no one in my family is into cooking.. I hardly ever saw my nani cooked.. my daddi used to make the best halwa but no one ever learned it from her and didn't start missing it until she passed away.. my mom isn't a great cook either, her food depends on her mood for that day.. Only my sister is actually into cooking and collects recipes n saves them.. but I dun like cooking so I never ask for those recipes :-(

I really feel left out..I wonder if there is any other family out there as well who just lives out of the shaan masalas :-(

Re: Grandma's recipebook..

:D , I and my wife.

Re: Grandma’s recipebook..

I wish I had gotten some recipes from my nani when she was alive…

Ricochay…she made them best!
Shami kabab…we spent a whole day making these!
Halwa…the tikkiyaan that you jamao in trays!

So many more…:naak: and ALL of her ghareloo remedies.

Okay, I think I will have to make a recipe book now too.

Re: Grandma's recipebook..

yeah ditto , Reha .. I really wish I had recipes from my grany ... :(

My mom and mumani's are brilliant cooks mashallah .. I sometimes wonder if they learnt it all from my nani ... but its haat haat ka taste too .. I have tried the same recipes and they turn out different taste !

Re: Grandma's recipebook..

I have noticed that nanis, dadis or even moms have their own special taste in their hands that one can't describe. No matter what I do, my cooking is not as good as my moms :/

Re: Grandma's recipebook..

hello to all ghareylo khatoons

Re: Grandma's recipebook..
