ISLAMABAD: The government of Pakistan Tuesday decided to restore column of religion in machine readable passports (MRP).
Defence Minister Rao Sikandar Iqbal and Federal Minister for Information Shaikh Rashid Ahmed announced this during a joint press conference in Islamabad.
They said that the five-member ministerial committee unanimously decided to restore religion’s column in MRP.
Shaikh Rashid said on the cover page of the passport, words of Islamic Republic of Pakistan would also be inscribed.
Responding to a question regarding Balochistan issue, he said it would be resolved mutual consent and dialogue.
Now all those who are ashamed of your religion, go convert to another one. And all those who do not like Pakistan’s full name, go to a country with a shorter name.
Sad day for all the GhairMuslims.....Though I would have to agree with PatriotAct pai.....what has MMA accomplished by this....their energies would be better spent on solving real problems....like counter MQM's influence and thuggery through tangible means.....as well as providing the masses with an alternate media soure....as opposed to the fahashat promoted by Geo and the like.....
At any rate, many Qadianis will simply continue to falsely declare on their passport that they are Muslims and continue to go to Mecca, thereby completely negating the usefulness of the religion column.
Their beliefs allow for taqiyya to avoid persecution just as Islam does, so I see no point at all to having such a statement of religion on your international travel document.
Are you sure? I’ve read in many places that taqiyya is allowed when the alternative is persecution. For example, when the Spanish Inquisition began persecuting Muslims in Al-Andalus, the scholars they followed allowed them to practice taqiyya because anyone in Spain who was not outwardly Christian was liable to be tortured or killed.
And the Turkish Prime Minister is repeatedly accused by his opponent of practicing taqiyya in order to secretly Islamicise Turkey.
At any rate, whether or it is permissible for Sunnis to hide or deny their beliefs in public, Qadianis do this.
Given the choice between making a denounciation of their faith without meaning anything by it, but gaining freedom from any limits in Pakistan, and sticking rigidly to their ideology, many of them find this an easy choice to make.
The religion column is thereby an ineffective means of controlling access to Mecca and Medina, since it is so easily circumvented. All it takes to be classified as a Muslim, rather than a Qadiani, is a tick and a signature. This is far from being remotely effective and is pretty much useless.

hey. what if a pakistani doesn''t believe in any religion? will his pp show blank in the religion column?
ps: BTW I think the only people that this move will help are plane hijackers to decide who to kill first! but I want to understand why this is necessary in the pp?
