Well what does Allah (in the Quran) say about dogs?
Re: Got a new pet.... "puppy"
mentions Dogs five times, and shows no signs of dogs being najis or haram.
and the story where the people of the cave accompanied by their dog ... (interesting story, i'm sure u've read it).
Re: Got a new pet.... "puppy"
Yes I believe you read about that in a post I made in this thread? The people of the cave having a dog makes sense because they might had it for hunting, guarding and the like... not as a pet :)
Can you please let me know the verses where Allah mentions dogs?
Re: Got a new pet… “puppy”
This is a good article for everyone…

** All praises are for Allah and may peace and blessings be upon all the Prophets and Messengers of Allah.**
** Point One: What is worship?**
Allah said, “I have not created the man or the jinn except for the purpose that they worship only Me” [The Noble Qur’an 51:56]
Whilst many religions are silent about the very purpose of our existence, the illustrious ayah above illustrates to us the purpose of our existence in this life, i.e. to worship only Allah.
Worship in Islam is quite different from the worship of many other religions. Worship in Islam is not restricted to mere rituals or designated services on appointed days or times. In Islam, worship is a comprehensive term denoting all that Allah loves and/or approves of from amongst the hidden or apparent sayings or actions of an individual. By this, a person completely submits and subjects all of his actions and sayings to the approval of the Lord of the Worlds, the King of Kings- Allah, the Majestic.
This is Islam, it encompasses intellectual, physical, emotional, and spiritual submission. If a saying is not loved by Allah, then it is not deemed as worship. And as a result, there is a deficiency in the person in fulfilling his purpose of existence. On the other hand, if a person says, “All praises are for Allah” or performs an act loved by Allah then it is qualified to be worship. We can only know if Allah loves or approves of something by He, Himself, informing us of it. And that is by what He has revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, i.e. the Quran and authentic Ahadeeth. Referring back to the Quran and authentic ahadeeth will give us the true understanding about an action, i.e. if Allah approves of it or not.
Therefore, one should not say, “I think God will approve of this” or “I feel God will not object”. What God loves or approves of is based upon knowledge (the Quran and authentic ahadeeth) and not sheer emotion. Islam is the middle path - it encourages both knowledge and action. It warns one from having knowledge without action and acting without it being based upon knowledge. However, for an act of worship to be accepted by Allah, it must fulfill two conditions:
Ikhlas: the act must be done sincerely and purely for Allah, not for self-praise or showing off, etc.
Ittiba’: the manner of the act of worship is to be according to the way prescribed by the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him.
The absence of any one of the above two conditions renders the act of worship invalid. Many proofs of this are mentioned in the Quraan and Sunnah regarding these conditions. They are not mentioned here for the sake of brevity.
Furthermore, amongst the important characteristics that must accompany worship are love, fear, and hope.
** Love - Allaah is to be loved by the believer more than anything else.
Fear - Allaah and His Punishment is to be feared such that one stays away from His Prohibitions.
Hope - One hopes from Allaah His Mercy and Forgiveness. These characteristics are to be properly balanced in the believer.**
Not all prohibitions are directly stated in the following terms: “XYZ is prohibited for you” or “XYZ is haraam”. In Usool-ul-Fiqh, the Principles of Jurisprudence, the various forms of prohibition have been elucidated. We find that the texts of prohibition in the Quran or Ahadeeth can include but are not limited to the following forms:
The usage of the word “prohibition” (or its various forms: prohibits, prohibited, etc.). Allaah said: “Prohibited to you are the dead animals” [The Noble Quran 5:3]
The form of Absolute Nahee (the prohibition command in Arabic). Allaah said, “Do not come close to adultery” [The Noble Quran 17:32], thus going close to adultery is prohibited.
The elucidation that an act is not permissible. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said. “The blood of a Muslim may not be legally spilt except…” [Al-Bukharee, Muslim]
The establishment of a consequence (and/or punishment) for the performance of an action. In such a case, the action is deemed prohibited. Allah said, “The male or female thief - cut their hands off” [The Noble Quran 5:38], thus stealing is prohibited because of the associated punishment. [For further elaboration on these principles please refer to: Al-Jaami’ li masaail al-usool al-fiqh by Abdulkareem An-Namlah p.48, also see Al-Usool min Ilm al-Usool by Shaykh Uthaymeen p.25]
Imaam Adh-Dhahabi said, when defining major sins, “Whoever performs one of these great sins that has:
a prescribed punishment (in this world) like murder, adultery, and stealing or
has a mentioned Waeed (threat of punishment) in the Hereafter that includes punishment, anger, warning, or the performer of such an action being cursed by the tongue of the Prophet, peace be upon him, then such an action is amongst the Kabaair (major sins). [Al-Kabaair by Imaam Adh-Dhahabee p.8]
Therefore, an action can be declared prohibited by various forms of texts. Case in Point: Keeping dogs as pets. Allaah said,
** “O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger…”** [The Noble Quran 4:59]
The Messenger of Allah said,
** “If someone keeps a dog neither for guarding livestock, nor for hunting, his good deeds will be decreased by two Qiraats a day.” [Al-Bukharee Vol.7, #391]**
The above mentioned hadeeth prohibits the keeping of dogs as pets due to the associated consequence, i.e. a person’s good deeds being decreased by two Qiraats a day - a Qiraat is the size of a huge mountain.
Allah said,
** “And you would have thought them awake, while they were asleep. And We turned them on their right and on their left sides, and their dog stretching forth his two forelegs at the entrance [of the Cave or in the space near to the entrance of the Cave (as a guard at the gate)]. Had you looked at them, you would certainly have turned back from them in flight, and would certainly have been filled with awe of them.” **[The Noble Quraan 18:18]
** The ayah speaks about the companions fleeing from the people because of their belief in Allaah and the Last Day. The above ayah does not prove that keeping dogs as a pet is permissible for many reasons:**
** Thus, the ayah and its commentaries point to the fact that the dog was not a pet, but rather a hunting dog. Thus, using this ayah to prove the permissibility of having dogs as pets is inconclusive.**
a) The rules and regulations of the past religions are not effective in Islam unless it agrees with Islam.
b) There is a clear prohibition in the Shariah regarding keeping dogs as pets. Thus, if there was a permissibility of it in the past it has been abrogated by the prohibition in the Shariah of Islam.
It is challenging for new Muslims to give up their pet dog after establishing a relationship with it for many years. However, one should remind themselves of the saying of Allaah,
** “Who has created death and life, that He may test you which of you is best in deed. And He is the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving”** [The Noble Quraan 67:2]
This life is a test. The results of this test will indicate our next abode- Paradise or Hell. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said,
** “The Hell-Fire is surrounded by all kinds of desires and passions, while Paradise is surrounded by all kinds of disliked undesirable things”** [Al-Bukharee Vol. 8, #494]
One of the hardest things to give up is addiction to a substance. At the time of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, some of his companions used to drink alcohol. However, when the ayah, “O you who believe! Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), gambling, AlAnsab , and AlAzlam (arrows for seeking luck or decision) are an abomination of Shaitan’s (Satan) handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be successful” [The Noble Quraan 5:90] was revealed, the companions abandoned alcohol immediately and overthrew their barrels of wine in the streets. The effect of the pronouncement of this one ayah accomplished what the alcohol ban in the US in the 1920s was not able to accomplish, despite the effort, law enforcement, and money put behind it.
The Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, understood that their love for Allaah was to be superior than anything else. The love of Allah was to be above the love for anything created. Furthermore, they understood that Allah is All-Wise, All-Knowing, All-Kind, and that He knows what is beneficial or harmful to human-beings. Allaah said, “and it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allah knows but you do not know.” [The Noble Quran 2:216]
When a man is obligated to pay zakat (obligatory charity), he may initially dislike giving money away, however, giving zakat is beneficial for him because it is an obedience to his Creator, a means to Paradise, a purification of his wealth, and a means by which more wealth will come to him. Allaah knows what is best for us. A new Muslim who has had a dog as a pet may likewise find it difficult to give up such a pet, but if it is done sincerely for the sake of Allaah and if one understands that it is for their own benefit then it becomes all the more rational to do so.
One may say, “But my dog saved my life once!” Firstly, Allah is the One who saves lives. The dog was just a means. It is up to Allaah to choose whatever means He wants. For example, Musa, peace be upon him, was picked up the house of Pharoah from the river; is it feasible for Musa to disobey Allaah and obey Pharoah, the one who fed him, raised him, and provided him shelter? Allaah said to Musa, peace be upon him:
“And indeed We conferred a favor on you another time. When We inspired your mother with that which We inspired. Saying: ‘Put him into the case and put it into the river; then the river shall cast it up on the bank, and there, an enemy of Mine and an enemy of his shall take him’” [The Noble Quraan 20:39]
“And the wife of Pharoah said: ‘A comfort of the eye for me and for you. Kill him not, perhaps he may be of benefit to us, or we may adopt him as a son.” [The Noble Quran 28:9]
Allah called the Pharoah an enemy of His, and yet He delivered Musa, peace be upon him, to Pharoah. Allaah chooses whatever means He wishes to save people because He is the Lord of the Worlds. The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said:
** “If someone keeps a dog neither for guarding livestock, nor for hunting, his good deeds will be decreased by two Qiraats a day.”**
** What is a qiraat?** The Prophet, peace be upon him said:
“If someone attends the Janaazah until the people pray it, then for him is a qiraat. If someone attends the janaza until the burial then for him is two qiraats” It was said, “What are two qiraats?” He said, “The likes of two huge mountains”. [Al-Bukhari, Riyaadh-us-Saliheen p.308]
Anything that causes one to lose good deeds equal to the sizes of two huge mountains a day can not be a believer’s best friend, even if it were just one good deed a day. At the Day of Judgment, a person, while having his deeds weighed, may break even such that he would need just one more good deed to tip the scales to enter Paradise by Allaah’s Mercy. What then would be the case, on the Day of Judgment, if two Qiraats of good deeds are reduced everyday from a person? On the Day of Judgment a person will be ready to give up anything to save himself, not just a dog, but even his brother, sister, mother, father, spouse etc. Allah, the All-Knowing, said:
“Though they shall be made to see one another (i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children. And his wife and his brother, And his kindred who sheltered him, And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him . By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell!” [The Noble Quraan 70:11-15]
** We ask Allah to strengthen our faith such that we make the right decisions, and enable us to love Him more than anything else. Ameen.** Allaah said,
“And of mankind are some who take (for worship) others besides Allah as rivals (to Allah). They love them as they love Allah. But those who believe, love Allah more (than anything else). If only, those who do wrong could see, when they will see the torment, that all power belongs to Allah and that Allah is Severe in punishment.” [The Noble Quraan 2:165]
** The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said:
“Whoever possesses the following three qualities will have the sweetness of faith:
The one to whom Allah and His Messenger becomes more beloved to him than anything else.
One who loves a person and he loves him only for Allah’s sake.
One who hates to revert to disbelief as he hates to be thrown into the fire.”** [Al-Bukharee Vol.1 15]

Re: Got a new pet.... "puppy"
GenSec, what kind of dog do you have?
Re: Got a new pet.... "puppy"
Dogs are filthier than cats or any other animal i've seen as a pet, though i think they're cute from a distance.. few months back i went to the beach with my family. There was another family with two identical dogs, they were so clean and white. Anyways, we went for camel riding and the camel just pooped away on the sand. Both of the dogs were so hungry, they ate camel poop, and their owner then came and kissed both of them on their mouths! i mean thats disgusting. Why would you want to keep an animal as a pet who'd do that? i've had pet cats for years and not once i've seen them do it. They are constantly cleaning themselves and their kittens.
p.s. yes it is forbidden in Islam to have a dog as a pet, as proven by Hadeeth and Quranic references. I prefer not to have any kind of animal in my house though.
