Good Wife = Good Cook

I have always supported women. The other thread was about 'Aaj Ki Aurat' not Aurat in general.

I was not angry, just lil` frustrated about how people have no tolerance for ideas that are not their own.

PakiAmerican - You're in a better mood..... I knew you had PMT yesterday!!! :)

I agree with you and it's a good attitude to have; you both enter a marriage, therefore certain duties are shared.

Is PMT what I think it is ? plz explain

Re: Good Wife = Good Cook

When that abbreviation is applied to time it means Pacific Mountain Time. :)

LOL...LOL....no realy ?

:omg:

good really good!!!

I was trying to come up with something but this beat it all!!!

Re: Good Wife = Good Cook

^ Its true as well. Hehe! :)

So much to blame on "Desi Food". Its hard...its this ...its that.... although most of your frustration is related to you not learning it when you were single and within and arm reach of your mother just like you did with chineese, maxican and other food :)

I think cooking is fun if you enjoy it else i have seen people who find it hard to fry egg too. :)

Re: Good Wife = Good Cook

^ desi food isnt hard...it's just time consuming. A lot of time goes into the prep work and the actual cooking. It's even more challenging for those that work.

Best thing to cook for a working woman would be easy to cook meals like grilled/baked foods during the weekday and a full pakistani meal during the weekends. ORRR maybe you can get all the prep work out of the way on weekends for the desi foods so that all you have to do is throw in a bunch of stuff in a pot and cook it :D

Re: Good Wife = Good Cook

^yes I agree - it's the prep time, and the cooking time - that kills a working woman!

and don't forget - you have to stand by the gas stove to keep on MIXING to avoid burning. =(

Foods like chinese, Italian, Mexican - they do not take much time.

on the other hand I have found Chineese food more difficult if you count preparation a bit time consuming. cut veggies get this get that. I guess if you freeze meat after washing according to weight proportion, freeze cubes of ginger/garlic and have stocked peeled onion in the fridge ...it makes life a bit easier :)

Re: Good Wife = Good Cook

For desi cooking, the key is to have some of hte main ingredients on hand.. prepare them over hte weekend. I use canned chopped tomatoes, i just hate wasting time on cutting tomatoes and it really doens't make a diference.. peel a bunch of onions a few days beforehand and keep em in a box, same with dhania/green onion. I buy ready-made paste b/c I don't have a chopper/blender, but its really easy to make enough to last a week...

with chinese its only prep time that is time consuming…not the actual cooking.

but yes i agree…have the prep work ready ahead of time :k:…then any cuisine can be easy to cook.

I guess if your spouse absolutely loves desi food then I could see you putting in the effort of preparing meals in advance and cooking it everyday during the week (even if u work)…otherwise I would just stick to cooking it on the weekends.

Re: Good Wife = Good Cook

^ slowly we all begin to get the shortcuts. It use to take hours to cook anything.

I can whip up fresh dinner in under 30 minutes even desi dishes (thank to my pressure cooker and freezer)

I find it hard too esp' when you have to cut the veggies etc into match-stick size pieces! Its so tiring esp' when you have to cook for my in-laws huge family! Lol! :)

Notorious, yes, I get very nervous. So, it’s nice to know you’ve been there, done it and survived!

Are you married? Yes, all women do learn to cook for their husbands. And nasty aunties do say and think you’re not ready for marriage if you haven’t learned to cook yet (speaking from experience).

If in-laws are living with you and/or more family, then that’s where this might not be plausible - hubby and I cooking and in-laws watching. :rotfl:

If we live on our own, I’m sure I’d feel better about the whole thing.

As for shows, cook books - all this stuff just goes over my head - I’ve no idea what they’re doing or talking about. I’m starting to watch my mom cook and try helping her - hoping to pick up on things. So far, I’m still stuck on the use of haldi.

My biggest fear, AE. Hate that saying now!!!

I’ll feed him, I know I will - but when he takes a bite and goes, uh, that’s enough - I’ll be heartbroken. :frowning:

Agreed.

One of the hardest parts. But, good upper-arm excercise.

Re: Good Wife = Good Cook

njgal- the pressure cooker and the freezer definitely helps - but - it's better for the EXPERIENCED ones!!!

If you do not know the microwave technique to defrost the frozen food/meat - then you are totally out of luck and out of time!!

Excellent ideas Sara. Canned tomatoes, ready-made garlic, ginger paste, ready made Shan masalas, hmmm good stuff. :)

the day a man says that to me (in regards to my cooking of course).....is the day I will stop cooking for him :)

Re: Good Wife = Good Cook

Advice to youngins - master one thing whether it be daal, or chicken, or snacks. The more your cook the better you get. It just comes with experience.

For cutting vegetables really small - get a chooping knife or a chopping board (comes with attachment). Cuts your time in half. (and your vegetables ;) )
