Hi,
I just wanted to get peoples opinion on this.
The guy’s side is saying that at the velima they do not want the bride to wear real jewellery due to the security situation.
The wedding and mendhi is in Lahore and the bride will real stuff given to her by her family.
We have never head of this before so just wanted to ask if this is the done thing???

i have never heard anything like that before....but as long as they r giving u real jewellery its okie...im sure they will get u some nice stuff for the waleema day too so dont worry...

Maybe it is a legitimate concern. I'd judge by what they give her before the wedding. They also should ensure that there is adequate private security there on the day if they are concerned.
I haven't heard of this before - my immediate reaction was well that's just weird. But Karachi can be a dangerous city and its best to be careful.

i head this so much when i was visiting pakistan last year...its common for thieves to target brides and guests at weddings since naturally, people wears tons of jewelry. at my cousins wedding, she did wear real gold jewelry. but all my khalas and cousins were scared (since we were all visiting from out of town to attend her wedding) and all wore artificial jewelry that was gold plated and it looked fine!
so don't worry :). karachi and lahore have some awesome artificial sets that look so real! i actually purchased one and took it to my local jeweler here in USA and even fooled him! he kept asking me, this is real nah? when did you buy this from us? lol, i was like you're the jeweler and expert- you tell me!

no, but what would you rather have taken away from you- an artificial set or a family heirloom or something you really valued/cherished (ie- real gold/jewels)???

well the security situation in karachi IS pretty bad. my future mil was telling me that when going to weddings, people will put their jewelery on AT the venue rather than wear it before hand, and bring a very saada chaadar to put on over their clothes so no one can tell they are going to a wedding. I also talked to my friend in khi, who said his friend and his wife were robbed at gunpoint on their wedding day- when the guy tried to resist, he was shot and spent a while recuperating.
wow i feel like such a downer right now. HEY but look on the brightside- if the guys side is insisting, they are worried for your safety! if you definitely want to wear a real set, just take some definite precautions like what my mil was saying maybe? :)

If the situation is so bad, why dont people hire guards for the weddings?
the guards would be there at the venue (especially at hotels, which I think tend to be safer) but I dont know how people are protected when they are in their cars on the way to the wedding or leaving the wedding- thats the scariest part!
Maybe guppies who have had weddings in karachi can let us know about their experiences :)

hey guys i wore artificial jewellery on my weddin not walima cus i wanted sumthin to match my outfit. u wudnt believe how expensive even artificil jewellery can be. i think i got it for 10,000 or more rupees. but atleast i was happy and no one pointed out or said anythin to embarass me, not even my inlaws. i m not sayin they didnt notice, maybe they did cus gold is gold! on walima i wore gold set but honestly, that also luks like artificiasl gold cus it was multicolor and was matt gold not glossy one. so its no big deal if one wears artificial stuff.

its pretty normalll in karachi to wear artificial jewlery the bride can get robbed while coming from the parlour or something so dont worryyy

OMG! trustt me! yur inlaws r cheaping out!!! how can they even say such a thing abt giving u fake jewleery for the walima!!! thats pathetic security reasons is just an excuse trust me! u shoudl be like no i am willing to take a risk i want real stuff!!!
i think u shud tell ur in laws to give u the real set, and that u will get an exact replica made as an artificial set...its very easy to get fake sets made off from real ones, and believe me u cant tell the difference except for the weight!!! it will cost u a good 20k but at least u can tell ur in laws that u will cherish the set as ur "shaadi gift from their side"...and will look back fondly on the memories - and the set!!!
