No doubt people do work hard, and its a very competitive city. Perfect once you've had the right training in your field to have a career in.
I prefer the greenery though - for some reason (and granted I was only there for 3 months) - I REALLY missed the greenery. Even the dog pee smell I could put up with. But, I found it so funny that the only greenery I found were in small parks here and there in the city. Sure sure there is Central Park...but in other parts of the country...Central Park would be normality.
Hm. I still think NYC is a great place to visit and have fun. Just not to live in.

PCG, I think it is a personal thing. I could never live anywhere. I go to coties like Vancouver, houston, Miami..nice places to visit..but they are too small and have little to offer to someone like me who wants life on-demand. I would prefer London over geneva, mumbai over madison, karachi over san fran.
I find comments like dirty adn stinky funny. It is a basket analysis one needs to do. Yes, there is dirt and grime..and you know what...it used to be worse, but one can live with it if I can also have access to the best food (any cuisine), best fashion, Best collection of museums, best theatre, best galleries, best shopping, best mix of cultures than any other city on the planet...etc.etc..

^ Yeah, I just prefer being somewhere where I'm being satisfied in terms of my career-work. I was in NYC, and I liked the culture and the cuisine, etc. But for a lot of that I needed way more money than I had. Even though I was a student, I at least was able to enjoy the museums...student discount :D
But I didn't enjoy the internship. I think if you've got a satisfying job there, making good money, then you're going to have a good experience with the city.
If you're a poor student trying to last out her chinese food for 4 meals and who resorts to walking to Chinatown every weekend to do groceries...yeah...

PCG, you are welcome sweetie. Next time you come, we will take you to Spice Market. We will ahve some of the best Asian Food in the world and do some celebrity eyeing. Madhanee has no class so I had to choose that place..less change of a scene..if you know what I mean.

Tsk tsk matsui. I didn't get laid in Cairo, Jakarta or Harare. I still rate them highly over NYC. Heck i rate Abbotabad higher than i rate NYC. It still has no effect on the fact that as a mega city with a Budget bigger than some national bugets it can't get the buses to go on time.
Kitty kat i believe it was the economist. Swiss cities have controlled the top 5 for The Economist for nearly 6 years now. Since i came to Switzerland. Just a shame the swiss are real *******s about migration.
Matsui you say they work harder but the question is of productivity. Most megacities like you have mentioned do not have the negative atmosphere of NYC and they are extremely productive with fewer working hours.

CM, they are towns not cities. How many great novels, movies, are wrtten about geneva? City itself is a character, so much so, that it is just refered to as “The City”
NYC runs the world. When companies around the world need to show off their being, they don’t go to the LSE or AIM, or harare stock exchange or even the Hangseng, they come to NYSE and NASDAQ. We make your little lives possible. live with that thought.
Actaully that is not right about prodcutivity CM. EVA impact by NYC workers yields greater returns than most cities around the world save HK. The reason is that we have the most talented people in the industries that are housed here than in most places around the world. MOre places aroudn the world want to be NYC than Geneva. Geneva is nice, don’t get me wrong. But it is a little viallge compared ot the complexity that is NY.
Ever taken the Paris Metro? it is either on strike or sih ti sbreaking down. NYC has one of the oldest subway infras with the largest connectivty. (to be superceded by Delhi, shortly) MOre people take the train on a given day in NYC than live in all of swtizerland. You are comparing apples with oranges. I would compare geneva to San Antonio or Raliegh Durham or even Ann Arbor.

What do you mean by living standards? I could live in bumfk texas have a 6000 square foot house on an acre and half lot, with an indoor and outdoor pools, tenniscourt, 3 s class mercedes, and a junglegym to boot for what a 2 bedroom apartment would cost in a doorman building on Sutton place. But I wouldn't have access to the best opera, the best polyglotic atmosphere (food, people, bars), museums, galleries, shopping etc etc etc..
To me, enrichement of the mind and soul and the ability to tell a chinese guy apart from a korean and a japanese is more important than the two pools. I prefer meeting Monica Ali at a book reading with a glass of wine in my hand than spending a friday evening at Chillis. Our lives are richer than most aroudn the world.

Living standards are also the things that CM posted in his original posts, which he meant is lacking in NY. On time public transport, cleaness, less working hours ect.. Going to theater and having a drink in a pub or two might be living standards for an overworked employee but not for some with kids or students who need the public transport to get to their daily work, they would not really care if they meet Monica Ali or Jack Ram on daily basis.

New York is different and you have to take it as it is. Life in New York is extremely fast and anyone from any other part of the world will have a hard time adjusting. Unlike European countries you don’t have siesta, greenery or cleanliness. If you are looking for that then you might want to check out the suburbs like Long Island etc. New York itself could be a little overwhelming. It is not for everybody and not everybody should try to find it fascinating.

Well lets see. If you consider a dumb author in the US who writes about C Film standard horror movie in NYC, then by all means alot of books have been written about NYC. However classics all came from Europe and the rest of the world. I mean name a poet like Neruda who has written about NYC?
NYC runs the world yet it can’t run a bus service! LMAO!!! So much for running the world. Also i would like to see that study on NYC workers. I want to know what factors they use to make such claims.
As for the Paris metro, i agree it is pathetic. It is extremely “efficient” but the urban planning must have been conducted by a blind man because the stops are way out there.
Not really Matsui. I would not say that NYC life is any richer as it is basically a personal opinion. I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of Geneva. But then again i felt cramped there as it was as you said small. Fayz I spent 17 years of my life in Cairo (15 million people) Jakarta (18 million people) Harare (1.2 million), Islamabad (1 million) and before that NYC (in that specific order). So I love big cities. I like the hustle and bustle.
However that is very different from having a respectable standard of living. NYC does not have that. Infrastructure is poor. Management is worse. The Art is to many degrees sheer stupidity.

CM, didn't you walk 60 blocks to ome and meet us for lunch? And you are talking abut Sheer stupidity? Like Fayz said, you have your opinion. I have mine. Cairo is closer to Delhi than it is to NY.Just a little bit of advice for your next trip here, considering the profession you are undertaking I am sure you will have many trips to NY, no able bodied person takes the bus. Only old people and handicapped people take the bus. Ask me why? :)

This is where you are wrong again. People with kids and students do enjoy cultural events. What makes you think people don't care about cultural events when they get married and have kids? Or do not like to go a bar for a drink with friends. You really need to get out more. Walk around an afternoon in Paris, go to the cafes..see the kids sitting with their parents, while they enjoy a glass of wine.

When bored - walk. I had 2 hours to kill before i met you guys plus it was a great day and who ever said I was smart. Secondly Cairo has better public transport than NYC. People may wish to travel to NYC but how many really say it is the place they want to settle down. NYC is alot of hype and no substance, just like any hollywood movie.
