I hate NYC. Literally. The public transport is inefficient. Forget that third world countries have better standards of public transportation. The buses, subways et al. never run on time. Wait there is no schedule. So they are never late but they are never early. Of course the standard of the equipment is horrible. The amount of junk on the buses and subway makes the london metro look clean. For a developed country and the best city to live in the world i see alot of broken down steps, dirt and flith. The US is the strongest country in the world yet it can’t keep its subways clean
People have no concept of enjoying life. Everybody is over worked and superficious not to mention arrogant and rude. Having dealt with the French on a regular basis both in Geneva, across the border and in Paris, i must say that i find them charming compared to the average New Yorker. The words culture and class are no where in the average new yorker vocabulary. But then again America is not really know for culture. Now the south atleast they have manners.
Of course the women don’t get me started. I may be old fashioned and not in line with the “american values” of new york but if you are 250 pounds you don’t wear a miniskirt. I guess i have lived in Europe too long where people actually care about how they present themselves. Women dress respectfully and elegantly to accentuate their assets. Women in Geneva rarely wore tank tops and miniskirts or go go “**** me” boots. It was all pants and tops. A more refined sense of style. They don’t bare it all like a freaking porn magazine. Or the fact that the woman seems to have just gotten out of bed and never showered and just wore what was on the floor.
NYC is great for a 2 week vacation. You do broadway, the comedy shows and do all the touristy stuff. Afterwards it is just a cesspool. I mean Malaysia has cleaner cities than New York and it is a developing country with a budget smaller than that of NYC and it is a friggin country.
Luckily I have the UN as my bastion of civilization and culture. Thank Allah for the UN.

So? Guys do it all the time and we put up with it.
I wasn't impressed by NYC either. Loads of unhappy people. But go to the street fairs that happen on the weekends - you'll catch them on some street area near Union Square somewhere - they alternate streets every weekend. I always had fun at those.
And honestly, I found the best place in NYC to be Chinatown. Oh and Little Korea is also really cool.
And also Times Square.
But definitely, working there is not fun at all. It seems that most jobs in NYC are the same - they just want to overwork you and screw you in the end. Superficial and classless indeed.

Well I don’t really pay attention to the males on the street, but one thing New Yorkers have to do is start to wear cologne or atleast use some deodrant. I mean come on how can you come to work stinking like a wet dog.
The thing is I have already done all of that. I mean the “art” at Central park. Great next time put up red drapes and red stands and you can be world famous. Its retard.

lol so true. i hated NYC. its over crowded and people are abnoxiously loud and rude. their streets make pakistani subzi mandi look good. when it comes to cleanliness, nothing beats singapore though.

Go to Little Korea. You see all the drama and action there. I saw this limo and suspicious looking Koreans - looked like body guards. Looks like a scene from a movie really.
Um...yeah, I know. The city really sucks. I think people spend their time with friends...doing creative things like shooting pigeons in central park with BB guns at 3 am.
Hehe. I used to walk around Union Square at like 1 am...looking for some store that would be open that I could get some chocolate from. It was creepy and scary, and the people you saw on the streets at that time of night were real shady. I think I was so bored that I did it just to entertain myself.

Singapore is great but it isn't clean it is sterile which really freaked me out as a kid and that they took away my packet of chewing gum at the airport.
Hmm if Little korea is between 30th and 15th street i have been all over it. I get 2 hours off for lunch so i just walk around when the weather is good. Beats sitting in the office all day.

Have done so when i was in Indonesia. Beautiful city Melbourne. Spent one week in Sydney and 1 week in Mel. Mainly stayed for the cricket really.

I told you. I was bored. Needed a break from working/studying, so I would go out there. This was all prior to the sudden GS addiction. In Miami, if you walk around outside at 1 am, you wont find much except some ducks having a post-midnight meeting at the lake. Sometimes it is duck sex, and that's not fun to watch anyway.

Lol. Alot of quacking eh? See this is why I miss geneva. 1 am? That is when the parties just started. Bars didn't close till 2 or 3 am. Clubs at 7 am and they served your a continental breakfast if you wanted it.
Also everything was within a 1 hour walking distance at the max if you wanted to get to France. NYC is congested dirty and basically looks like Pindi without all those high rise buildings.

Sounds awful. CM I was reading an article which rates the top cities of the world and Geneva, along with a couple of other Swiss cities rank tops, followed by a couple of European cities and then Canadian cities. American cities rank between #30 and #40. So, having lived in one of the best places in the world, I doubt you'll be satisfied anywhere else now. Go back to Geneva my friend.

bachchon..those are towns..geneva is not a city...it is a village. There are only 10 or so cities in the world worth mentioning. NYC, London, Tokyo, Paris, SHanghai...karachi, Mumbai, etc etc....these are cities. REst are villages with contrived cultures.

Having lived in NYC for 5 years, my husband and I are really itching to leave. It's a very hard city to live in especially with kids. The super rich can live comfortably and have everything at their fingertips but for the average person it's like being a hamster on a wheel. There is such a great divide between the poor and the rich here that it's depressing. It's not just the homeless people it's the division of labour. It's the people from (Spanish)Harlem and Bronx and Brooklyn that come to Manhattan to work for all the super rich. All the brown skinned people are working for all the white skinned people.
It is dirty and stinky especially in the summer when all you smell is dog pee and garbage in the humid air. As much as I want to leave I will miss it since our daughter grew up here. We have some good memories. And there are good people here. A majority of them are rude, yes, but then you can be surprised by a smile by a stranger or striking up a conversation with another mom at a playground. I'm sure Safia will always remember Central Park picnics, her playdates, Soho, the Metropolitan Museum, and some of our neighbors who are so sweet and nice. So in the future, when we return to NYC if only for vacation, we'll come back with good memories but happy that we moved on.

wow you have lived here for 5 years. I lived in Manhattan for 14 years and even after moving 15 miles west, I kept a pied’a’terre. You want to talk about divide? Have you gone to places like India or Pakistan? Or london or Paris. it is the same. In all world class cities, there are pockets of poverty, ghettos, (in paris all muslims are shuttled to suburbs where they live in their own concrete cities.
I think you are cooped up in your subsidized apartment too much. Get out, go to restauratns and bars and museums where you will see people of all colors working as well as patrons. This city is based on meritocracy. It doesn’t differentiate between color and caste. Go look at your husband’s hospital. How many brown people work there as doctors, nurses, administrators. Go to any bulge bracket bank and you will see them full of INdians and Pakistanis. You need to get out of your prejudicial mindset you brough from your pind. The brown people, as you put it, hold some of the most cherished lifestyles in the city. Everyone cannot make $500K a year. Peoople also work harder in NYC than anywhere else int eh world save HK.
In every part of the world people work for the super rich. white people also work for the super rich.
well everyone I know summers on SHelter Island anyway. too many tourists int eh summer in NYC.
I am always amazed that immigrants from desilands talk about dirt and stink of NYC. hahah..it is a friggin city..8 million people on an island only 14 miles long. what did you expect, shangrila?
