You cannot compare the two situations, since most of the world does not recognise Taiwan’s independence from China. In the eyes of China and most countries in the world, Taiwan is a part of China. Even the USA does not recognise Taiwan as an independent country. It is nothing more than a rebellious province of China. And bear in mind that China has never actually invaded Taiwan, nor ever attacked Taiwan. India actually attacked and invaded land that was internationally recognised as being part of Portugal, just as Hong Kong was international recognised at belonging to the UK prior to the handover. Even China recognised Hong Kong as belonging to the UK until handover, and therefore never threatened it in any way.
China’s religious status has nothing to do with this. Even the Prophet (pbuh) was friendly and indeed allied with non-Muslim Abysinnia. Whilst one can point to China’s actions against it Uigher popualtion, there are a far greater number of Muslims amongst China’s majority ethnic Hui population. This means that the majority of China’s Muslims receive extensive support from the state. China’s government pays to train imams; China’s government pays to maintain mosques, China’s government imposes laws that account for Muslim sensitivities. So for example, China outlaws the presence of pigs in areas where Muslims are the majority; China also exempts Muslims from the infamous one-child policy.
