global metropolitan/cosmopolitan vs national links

I read an article years ago about EU and how the children who are born in one country, parents are from another, move to a third etc are really pan european but since they are almost always in larger cities are pan-european urbanites.

Later i read a study which looked at declining national identities here is a link Beyond Current Horizons : National identities: are they declining? | Technology, children, schools and families

(part of abstract below)

So my question is, is that how you feel? I think I would feel more at ease in a large city in another country than a small town in US, or for that matter UK.
I suppose in some cases the culture could be quite significantly different.

so for comparison sake, I would rather move from lets say NY to London, than from NY to De Moines, Iowa
or to Hong Kong instead of Topeka Kansas,

at some point it may fail…like if the choice is between minneapolis and lets say Kuwait…i may opt for Minneapolis..may..

People who I was taking to were surprised a bit about it but felt growing up across the globe has give me a different view than others, but i know others who have seamlessly moved cultural and national boundaries and feel the same way.

how do you see yourself..are you a global urbanite too?

Re: global metropolitan/cosmopolitan vs national links

I think most of the people on GS are. Some have found more concentrated pockets with in metopolitan+school+internet to make it more comfortable for them. The one every thing "Desi"
Kinds.
Then only metropolitan could support such existence of small subcultures.
Stuff like that.

Re: global metropolitan/cosmopolitan vs national links

But even as an urbanite in a new country, new to the individual or the individuals parents or grandparents, will they be more at ease at a different metro in a diff country than a smaller town in their own?

Re: global metropolitan/cosmopolitan vs national links

No. Even in the years I lived abroad, the things I have valued, changed a bit. Well.. I always loved people(does not mean I am "peoples person" ). But now I have more appreciation for the relations and events and things.
So naturally its going to run deeper in the place where I am from. Specially when family lives there.
So I think older generation would be the same. Their feeling emotions would run deeper with the place they are connected more.

Like I miss dog I had.. the walls.. stairs... let alone people.
hmmmm you are making me think...
But I think at some age your ambition take over emotion and finer feelings.
But then as you grow older... emotions and finer feeling crawl back up.

So What I am saying is essentially its choice between emotional attachment on many levels and promise(opportunity) for future.

Interesting thread. I thought I understood it until I read Monk's reply and I'm confused now. How does his reply relate to the question asked (I'm sure it relates).

Re: global metropolitan/cosmopolitan vs national links

ATleast now you know who to put in the ignore list in order to keep your understandings clear :hehe:

Re: global metropolitan/cosmopolitan vs national links

As per the OP, I think i'm pure urbanite and can adjust globally as well. When I first moved to suburbs few years back for a long file i felt like i'm lifeless. Literally bored to death. If i'll hv to move somewhere i'll always prefer cities, preferably metropolitan like 10 out of 10.

Re: global metropolitan/cosmopolitan vs national links

I'm not a global urbanite. I never moved. Born and brought up in the same city.

Re: global metropolitan/cosmopolitan vs national links

But you have travelled around and i'm sure you have seen suburb areas in your country as well, so u think if you move u'll be able to settle in easily?

Re: global metropolitan/cosmopolitan vs national links

No. I'm very attached to my place. I think I'll have a tough time adjusting elsewhere.

Re: global metropolitan/cosmopolitan vs national links

LP, let's say you can not stay where you are, let's assume career or education options are that you either move to a small town in the current country, or to a similar sized city in a different country, where will you be more at ease.

I have friends who would never want to leave the state let alone the country. reasons range from family or roots to just being used to a place, others would move from Chicago to NYC or Seattle but would hate to move to Peoria or Springfield. I am taking it a step further and saying for some moving from a metropolis to another in a different country is more palatable than from a metropolis to a pind.

Re: global metropolitan/cosmopolitan vs national links

I don't think that I could move to a small city. While the charm of peace is attractive, I would prefer to move to a city in another country.

Re: global metropolitan/cosmopolitan vs national links

I cannot live in a small city, I've visited a few often for family reasons and even though I knew it's temporary I still felt suffocated. Would definitely chose a big city may it be in another country.

Re: global metropolitan/cosmopolitan vs national links

If you put it that way, then, a similar sized city in a different country.

Re: global metropolitan/cosmopolitan vs national links

I am definitely not an urbanite. People do absolutely nothing for me. I prefer to live away from civilization. A pind will do just fine.

Re: global metropolitan/cosmopolitan vs national links

maybe u are a ruralite then :)

Re: global metropolitan/cosmopolitan vs national links

More like a hermit who wants to live in the Rockies. I have no interest in any kind of lifestyle. My standards are pretty low. Lol
