On my sister's wedding when we got to $500, all the elders (our elders) from other side of the stage started starring me to stop and get up...lol...I think I got $50 from that $500, rest was distributed among the cousins for juta chupati which I didn't mind...lol... I think without them I wouldn't be able to even get a penny..lol :D
Anyway, it is just a fun thing, so we should not fix a number with it. Guys already have to spend so much money on other stuff at their wedding, lets spare them on such things. Lets not put a "normal" or "decent" cap on juta chupati. Just have fun and happily accept whatever he gives you. :D

10 yrs ago at sister1’s wedding we got $500.00. BIL may have given us a grand were it not for his manhoos friends.

negotiate upfront I would say so both sides have an idea of what to expect. not to an exact figure but a rough idea so you know how much he can afford and he has some idea of what to expect too. This wedding we went to the sisters asked for a grand per sis which would be 3 grands, the guys side was totally shocked 
they were like itnay tau doolhay ko beych kar bhi nahi millainge hahahha.

Sorry guys, but this is such a very bs tradition. Not trying to be a hypocrite here since i've been part of a few such negotiaions at various shadis, but ive also seen quite a few instances where people have crossed limits during bargaining and things have taken turns for the worse. Buts thats another thread.
As for lilmisssweetness, your husband has to give no money if he wants. If he decides to take a stand that is.

i don't see the point in giving thousands of dollars. you don't know who can afford to pay that much, people have their own financial issues especially after you have just put together a wedding for god knows how much. it may be fun and all but people should try to keep it minimum.

At my wedding, sis got money for chunni tanna (Where you stop the baraat at the door with a dupatta and dont let them in until the dulha gives some money). I think she started with 500 and got 200 at the end. ANd for doodh pilai she asked for 25 cents, not sure if she got those. Like Lusi, ia lso think most of the money was distribted amongst my cousins etc.
