When you talk into a ER and complain about something…legally they have a duty to make sure you’re “ok”. Even if you’re not obviously bleeding, dying etc…they still have a legal duty to “see” you, run necessary tests, and make sure nothing is wrong. If a pregnant woman walks in and says she needs to be checked out for something (even if she’s not in labor), the ER has to make sure that she and the baby are “ok”. If they refuse care, and if something goes wrong in the pregnancy or the baby has issues after birth…the hospital can be sued for it. The potential for the lawsuit/negative publicity is not worth it for the hospital.
