Ok so I know there are several GS ladies who have given birth while visiting US/UK either planned or unplanned. One of my friend is in a similar situation. Infact her husband lives here (green card) and she can only visit him. So now she is pregnant and would like to give birth in the US. How do you do it on visitor’s visa? Insurance, after care, baby’s insurance, monthly/weekly checkups, any complications, scans… how do you do it? I am sure you don’t pay it out of your own pocket. That’s a lot of money and having baby here is expensive. Do you buy a specific kind of insurance or is there a way around it?
Re: Giving birth on visitor's visa
Medicaid? Im pretty sure they dont' ask for immigration status.
Re: Giving birth on visitor's visa
^ I think you have to be a permanent resident(green card) or citizen to be on medicaid!
They may have to buy the visitor's insurance otherwise they can set up an installment plan with the hospital and then pay for it over a few months/years!
One of my friends had started working and found out about pregnancy, her company didnt cover anything since she had to be working there for at least a year to be covered for pregnancy cost so she ended up with a bill of about 12k after her girl was born and is now paying in installments.. she lives in NY!
Re: Giving birth on visitor's visa
12k is nothing. Its not always that low. My insurance paid about 40,000 for me and my baby. I am sure well over that actually. Sometimes unexpected things happen. Now add that and regular office visits..
I am pretty sure there are few guppans who have done this.
And Sara, GTG is right about visa status to apply for medicaid.
Re: Giving birth on visitor's visa
oh hers was a very normal delivery and hassle free pregnancy so probably that's why she had to pay 12k.. I have been to L&D a few times and when I get my insurance bill it's like 3k for an overnight stay so I cant even imagine how much it would be with delivery and such!
They cant deny you ER visit that would be the time of child birth BUT no doc will take her without insurance for pregnancy since it's not considered an emergency.. heck some insurances refuse to cover pregnancy if you are a new patient and call it an already existing condition!
Why do they want to give birth here? seriously is it worth the hassle if they dont have insurance?
Re: Giving birth on visitor's visa
has her husband apply for her yet? if he did, I am surprised they gave her a visit visa because usually if you are going through the immigrant visa, they dont grant the non immigrant visa!!
Re: Giving birth on visitor's visa
I don't think the husband has applied yet because he is on GC and he is waiting to be a citizen himself (probably in just few months) and then he plans to apply.
Yeah well the last option would be to not give birth here.
Re: Giving birth on visitor's visa
tell him to apply right away and then as soon as he becomes the citizen, just call and update the status!! it will save them a lot of time!!! I am talking from personal experience. :-)
and if they are worried about the baby's citizenship, if the baby is born in Pakistan after the dad is a citizen already, he/she will get the citizenship right away! Only one parent needs to be a US citizen at the time of the birth of the baby, no matter where he/she is born!
Check visitors insurance as well.. If someone takes a pregnant woman, it will probably be no less than $800-1000/month! Who said babies are cheap :D
Re: Giving birth on visitor's visa
Well at least they make people pay for the medical expenses in the US. In the UK it's all at the expense of the taxpayer and a huge factor towards the current overstretched resources of the NHS. But that's a whole other thread :)

We also pay our taxes too of which some money goes to mediciad and medicare and to people who don't have insurance..... and we have to pay for our own insurance as well.
Re: Giving birth on visitor's visa
^exactly!
There are so many pakistanis here too who obtain green card, refuse to work, and pop out babies on taxpayers insurance!!
This one time, I met an auntie who was telling everyone proudly that her sister on green card had applied for medicaid at her previous visit, went back to Pakistan, got pregnant and came back here to give birth on medicaid! Now she had a c-section and very complicated pregnancy.. all for free and auntie was very proud of "looting" amrika!! I was furious and told her that we work hard to pay for people like her sisters so please avoid saying that infront of tax payers! she doesnt like me anymore, no surprises there :(
Re: Giving birth on visitor's visa
^^ lol that's funny. People on food stamps.. WIC program.. Its just so wrong. I can understand someone getting the benefit when they truly deserve it but it looks like we pay for a huge number of people and our own insurance.

varies by country. My parents immigrant visa is in process but they visit us every 12-18 months on visit visa.
Re: Giving birth on visitor's visa
^ are they the residents of some european country? I was talking about Pakistan and from my personal experience! And I also believe it depends on the relationship or age..they may not give a visit visa to a young husband of a wife who is us citizen thinking the person may never come back.. In fact we were denied that seven years ago!!!sighhhhhhhhhhhh

Not sure if you have had much experience with visitors trying to give birth in the uk down your way but I have a tale to tell.My neighbour applied for her sister in laws visa whilst she was pregnant. When she got here they called the local GP to arrange a midwife appointment. The midwife visited them and during routine paperwork asked for immigration status. When they said visitor she told them they should look onto private healthcare or returning to Pakistan as she wouldn't be able to treat her and as far as she knew the hospital would bill them in the region of 11-22K UK pounds to give birth in the Uk as a visitor.Needless to say they sent the girl packing.I still chuckle at their belief the baby would gain child tax credit etc for being born in the UK.
Re: Giving birth on visitor's visa
any baby born in the uk whos mother is on vister visa does not automatically become a uk citizen.

Haven't had any experience of this happening in my immediate family but I know of plenty of instances where this has happened as recently as a few weeks ago. I don't know why so many people assume that they or the child will get citizenship just because they were born here but it doesn't stop them from trying. If nothing else I guess they save the cost of giving birth privately in Pak as the NHS is rather a soft touch.....if a woman turns up in labour then they are hardly going to send her away. They don't register too early as they know they won't be paying the money to go private so deliberately leave it too late.
Re: Giving birth on visitor's visa
Pardon my ignorance....but what is wrong with giving birth in Pakistan or the home country? Is it the cost? lack of facilities?

I think in this scenario it is because they want the baby to be a US citizen by birth. If the father still has the GC and the baby is born in Pakistan, the father will have to apply fort that child's immigration alongwith the mother.

Off topic...but we know someone who had 3 kids here in the US when both the parents are illegal here. They used to take great pride and tell that they never had to pay a penny out of their pockets...not sure how and why but I think it was sth about them not having social security numbers.I recently heard the wife got a gastric bypass surgery done.I really wanna know who paid for it...!!
