GIRLS ONLY PLEASE!

Ok so this is a little personal but im confused… so i am getting married in august and am starting birth control. I have been reading up on it and its freaking me out. Every kind I read bout has bad reviews. Gaining 15 lbs in one week, 15 day periods, mood swings, depression, etc. I do not want to gain 15 lbs before my wedding! Im considering not even going on it now…
Does anyone have any suggestions or has heard good things about a particular brand?

Re: GIRLS ONLY PLEASE!

Get this moved to Health and renamed "Birth Control" options.

Personally I would advise you to wait until you are married and discuss your options with husband, getting HIM to use protection in the first instance (or instances!) until you are happy to make a decision for longer term options.

All hormones affect you in some way or another.

Re: GIRLS ONLY PLEASE!

Birth control, though convenient, often does have side effects on the body. What kind have you started? You need to pay very VERY close attention to your body's signals and figure out whether or not you are experiencing negative reactions. Weight gain is usually one of the side effects, but if you exercise regularly and watch what you eat, it shouldn't be a problem. But there are other issues to worry about too. Such as mood swings, imbalance, etc that are less obvious but can be a cause. So do more research. And as Rupay suggested, you really should wait till after your marriage, then discuss with hubby and your doctor further, before you start.

Re: GIRLS ONLY PLEASE!

don't believe everything you read. the weight gain associated with BCP's is 5-10 pounds. which won't possibly even happen if you maintian a proper diet and have the normal amount of excercise you usually do. the mood swings are also negligible...there might be PMS, but that's just normal. everyone gets PMS regardless of being on pill or not. i haven't really heard of depression on the pills, so i think you're clear. go for a light pill, it does it's work without filling you up with too many hormones. a friend just went on alesse, and ortho-tricyclen also makes a light pill.

Re: GIRLS ONLY PLEASE!

^ agreed.

i don't find BCP's a big deal at all and i've been taking them for a few years now. i use Yasmin, its a low-dose, combo pill, so it has estrogen and progrestrone and i haven't noticed any significant changes at all- my moods are fine, i'm doing fine, my skin is great, haven't gained any unnecessary weight- my libido is a bit low at times, but there could be other explanations for that- and it just means you get a bit more creative in the bedroom! ;)

what i would not recommend is the depo-provera shot. on that one, i did gain quite a bit of weight. it also stays in your system much longer than the pill since it is injected directly into your muscle, which could be an issue when you are ready to try for a baby.

as with any medication though, consult your doctor. h/she will probably have you try out a couple of different pills to see how you respond. i read up on yasmin so i requested my doctor for it and it worked out so well that i didn't need to try anything else.

and remember, this is a perfectly normal occurence in this day and age- women all over the world take the pill and there is nothing shameful/embarassing/weird about it. there is nothing to be scared of! :) if anything, it gives you more control over your body and your choice of when/if to have a child.

Re: GIRLS ONLY PLEASE!

What I seriously dont understand is why do you need to get on the pill before marriage ! :konfused:

I have heard in Pakistan they push the girls to take birth control just before the wedding , but I find it absolutely insane ! please somebody , correct me if i am wrong !

Re: GIRLS ONLY PLEASE!

Syani my doc prescribed Aviane. And she also said BC does not provide any protection the first month and reccomended to go on 3 months prior to make sure it works for you.

Murgi i think Aviane is supposed to be light so thats why she prescribed it. I hope its ok. I think i'll try it for one month and see how that goes.

I have heard alot about Yaz, so maybe i should just start with that. The only thing is though that i have heard its more expensive than most BC.

Re: GIRLS ONLY PLEASE!

well CB i think you have to go one one month prior atleast.... thats what i have heard.

Re: GIRLS ONLY PLEASE!

chester, are you working? most insurance plans will cover the cost of the BCP. i haven't heard of aviane but if your doc prescribed it, perhaps try it to see how you feel. i think you should give it at least a couple of cycles, unless you feel sick/weird immediately, to see how you really feel, but again, thats up to your doctor and you to discuss/decide.

CB, its because the pill needs to be in your system for one cycle at least before it is effective- you can't take the pill a week before your wedding and expect it to work. i also think in case you do experience side effects, you should be taking it a few months before the wedding so you have time to resolve any issues that might arise, and try something else. as for pushing someone to take it, that's stupid. it has to be a personal choice that you support otherwise you won't be regular with it and then you might as well save your money because its not going to work!

Re: GIRLS ONLY PLEASE!

Wait wait. Why are you using birthcontrol again?

Re: GIRLS ONLY PLEASE!

i think the problem with the internet is that people are prone to share bad experiences rather than good ones. hence it seems like everyone on this pill has a nightmarish time when in reality millions of women use this method of birth control without any adverse effects.

i started the combined pill recently. i was wary and a little scared but you just need to be in tune with your body and monitor changes closely and talk to your doctor if you're worried. i will admit that i had a little bit of nausea and loss of appetite the first 10 days but that was much worse if i took the pill in the morning. if took it at night i would wake up ravenous. i'm fine now so far though.
as far as the weight gain, i think the pill increases appetite for a lot of women, so if you make sure you don't start eating any more than you do now i don't see a problem in regards to that.

some women need to change to a different type of pill or find another method of bc that works for them. you won't know until you start.

Re: GIRLS ONLY PLEASE!

ooooyii fayax , leave the girls alone … go away … shoooooo :nessy:

Re: GIRLS ONLY PLEASE!

You knew where to find me I take it!..lol

Okay…I will leave it alone.

Re: GIRLS ONLY PLEASE!

I took Aviane too, during my first 1.5 years of marriage. I didn't have any side effects. I did gain about 7-8 pounds during that time, but I don't think that was the pill, but rather the fact that I was eating large meals with hubby :D. I was underweight anyway, so it wasn't a big deal.

It's hard to say what's best -- everyone reacts differently. But the BCP is fairly mild and with few side effects. Just be attentive to your body -- if you notice anything feel funny, talk to your doctor.

Re: GIRLS ONLY PLEASE!

somegroovychick i am working so i think it should be covered, but ive heard if you dont go for the generic it can cost more for you. But haven't tried it yet.

stoppit i see what your saying and its true. i will need to really pay close attention to changes and usually i dont. Im quite careless and pass everything off as temporary.

Sahar im so glad someone else took it. You have no idea how much better that makes me feel! I will need to work on getting into a good workout regimine now so i don't have problems with weight later i guess.

Re: GIRLS ONLY PLEASE!

Although have never had the need to go on a BCP, from uni I know that it is one of the safest and most researched methods of BC. You should only experience side effects during the first cycle and after that it should be fine (if not you will need to try a different one with advice from your doc). BCP actually helps to regulate your cycle and you will always know when your periods will be so its acually suppose to be convenient in that matter.

Re: GIRLS ONLY PLEASE!

it also helps to take it at night before bed- not only do you remember to do that, but you don't really feel any nausea if it should happen cos you're fast asleep!

Re: GIRLS ONLY PLEASE!

They usually do that there to control the date of the period so that you do not have your period on your wedding night. Personally, I think that's unnecessary, but to each her own.

Re: GIRLS ONLY PLEASE!

what about condoms and coil......my cousins said they are the best bet....no interference with hormones

Re: GIRLS ONLY PLEASE!

Really!? woow i had no idea.
